KILL la KILL Episode 20 (Time for a 180º shift of some things.)

キルラキル ep. 20 SPOILER Review
KILL la KILL episode 20

Synopsis:

KILL la KILL Episode 20Mako tries to talk some sense into Ryuuko, who’s in a foul mood due to the knowledge she’s a Seimeisen hybrid. Nui and Ragyou’s forms appear, constructed of Seimeisen material, which only eggs Ryuuko on. In her rage, a swipe from Ryuuko’s scissor sword cause two distant highrise buildings to be sliced.  Mako tries again to reach her friend, but Ryuuko leaves, steals a chopper bike, and heads to Honnouji-cho. Meanwhile, the Nudist Beach leaders meet to try to figure out why Ragyou provoked Ryuuko into going into a certain trap. Mako figures out that Senketsu wants to go after Ryuuko

KILL la KILL Episode 20Houka taps into Honnouji Gakuen’s security feeds and discovers where Satsuki is imprisoned. With the Elite Four fired up after realizing she’s sharpening metallic toenails, Mikisugi offers the use of Nudist Beach’s secret weapon, which is actually the hidden part of the base HQ that they are currently at. It is a ship, named Hadaka no Taiyou-maru. When the ship launches, with its open-air bridge, the Mankanshoku family are there, offering to be the medical support team. Meanwhile, Ryuuko reaches Honnouji Gakuen, where she frees a number of people from the Seimeisen before challenging Ragyou and Nui. Nui pops up to greet Ryuuko, where she is happily excited by how fast Ryuuko has become.

KILL la KILL Episode 20An assault helicopter launched from Hadaka no Taiyou-maru reaches the school and attacks. Satsuki takes this as her signal to escape, which she does by using her sharpened toenail, constructed from the same material as her sword, Bakuzan. Meanwhile, Nui tells Ryuuko that she’s the only one who can understand her. Ryuuko stabs Nui, but then discovers Nui is a Seimeisen hybrid, born from an artificial Seimeisen womb. Junketsu appears and Ryuuko discovers she’s been snared by threads, put there by Nui during the fight, and she’s absorbed into Junketsu. Satsuki is rescued and brought to the ship, but Ryuuko, now wearing Junketsu, attacks them. Satsuki goes below for Senketsu, then emerges to face Ryuuko, asking Senketsu for his strength.

Thoughts/Review:

I figured Nui had some sort of story, but to be honest, I didn’t expect her to be an artificially created humanoid, born from the Seimeisen. In effect, Nui is the personification of the Seimeisen, more so than Ragyou and Ryuuko.

KILL la KILL Episode 20

Also, I was amused that Nui did what I expected her to do in episode 18 — pretend to be injured or the like, then go, “Psyche!”

KILL la KILL Episode 20

Just how was Nui injured by Ishin? It must have something to do with the giant scissors being made whole since simply using half a scissor didn’t injure Nui.

KILL la KILL Episode 20

As expected, the Seimeisen attack on the Nudist Beach HQ was just to bring Ryuuko out and ready Ragyou’s plan. What I hadn’t expected is that Ryuuko would be the one put into Junketsu. Naturally, Ragyou has to sexually assault her other daughter, and then we gain an understanding of why Junketsu is considered a wedding dress.

KILL la KILL Episode 20

I also hadn’t expected Satsuki to wear Senketsu. However, I did think that Satsuki and Ryuuko would have to battle each other again, just not with the 180º role reversal. *lol* In the end, I think it is pretty obvious that after Satsuki and Ryuuko fight, they team up to defeat Ragyou and Nui.

KILL la KILL Episode 20

One side note — after my many remarks on how honorable and samura-like Satsuki had been, including while she wore Junketsu, I found it interesting that as Ryuuko wore the transformed Junketsu, it had her wearing hakama. I can’t help but wonder why. Is it Satsuki’s influence on Junketsu, or something else?

KILL la KILL Episode 20

I loved seeing the Elite Four get fired up at rescuing their beloved Satsuki-sama. ^_^

KILL la KILL Episode 20

Poor Mako. Even she couldn’t reach Ryuuko this episode.

KILL la KILL Episode 20

Well, some interesting turn of events. I’m looking forward to seeing how things wind up. ^_^

Nui actually makes me curious, how deep is her loyalty to Ragyo anyway? And is it possible that at some point she will betray Ragyo because of her own agenda?

I may sound like a savage but I think I enjoyed the stabbing scene almost as much as Ryuuko, Nui really deserved a foot or two of steel shoved into her.

Actually Isshin Did use only half the scissor while the other half was still stuck in him. Some theories are that Nui actually regenerated the eye but keeps it hidden for some reason.

Being wedded to the clothes huh… I had this idea that Ragyo wanted to feed Satsuki to Junketsu but I thought of something more extreme, like what happened to Kinue. Still this shows how awesome Satsuki is. If Junketsu was trying to do to her what he did to Ryuuko then she must have some incredibly force of will to resist it.

We will finally get the Final decisive fight between Satsuki and Ryuuko, I was afraid that we wouldn’t after Satsuki’s rebellion. Certainly didn’t expect it to happen This way…

Hakama huh… that’s interesting actually. I kind of doubt it’s Junketsu’s influence. Perhaps it’s some sort of subconscious attempt at emulating her older sister by Ryuuko?

Elite Four is made of awesome as always, in fact it’s almost like wearing Goku Uniforms Restrained their awesome and only now they can fully show it.

I have to say that I feel incredibly sorry for Ryuuko. Her world got flipped upside down and the moment she wakes up she gets more taunting from Nui and Ragyo. She is all torn up inside, filled with safe-hate and doing the only thing that have worked for her through her life. Punch the one who is trying to hurt you. To be quite honest I was quite annoyed with Elite Four’s behaviour, they didn’t even try to talk to Ryuuko, just discarded her like a broken toy they had no more use for.

      Hmmm…nice episode indeed!

1- Yes, the Elite 4 was awesome with those bright eyes ^^. And, OF COURSE they couldn’t do a thing to stop (the much more powerful) Ryuuko! What kind of relationship do they even have?! Even THE Mako didn’t reach her this time…

2- Okay, so Nui is a manifestation of the Life Fibers themselves. I had this idea in mind for a while now. How could she be so strong anyway? In that case, why didn’t she regenerate her eye already? One side of the scissors had no effect on her… probably keeping it hidden for some reason?

3- And above all else: the S.S. Naked was built with a chair and umbrella for Satsuki?! XDDD

      • Andarion says:

All in all… it’s not even that they didn’t try to stop her but how they treated her. The moment she stopped being useful to them they just discarded her. They used and abused her through the whole series and then just threw her away. Even Sanageyama who kept rumbling about wanting to fight her didn’t so much as change an expression. Sorry but I’m really sore about that…

Oh we ALL know that it will take Satsuki all of two, maybe three days to make herself the Boss of Nudist Beach. Elite Four already made preparations for that XD

That moment had greater impact on you guys than it did me. ^_^;;;;; But yeah, Ryuuko was used, even by Nudist Beach.

The moment she sat in the deck chair, she pretty much declared herself boss. *lol*

That was actually pretty sad in a weird sort of way.

        My questions as well. ^_^

*lol* Mikisugi gives this look when “Satsuki-sama” sits up there. I suspect he built it for himself, but Satsuki just naturally took the highest point from which to rule. ^_~

Nui actually makes me curious, how deep is her loyalty to Ragyo anyway? And is it possible that at some point she will betray Ragyo because of her own agenda?

That is a good question. Nui does respect Ragyou and has been pretty much on board with Ragyou’s plan from the start. Being an artificial, hybrid Seimeisen-human, and being Ryuuko’s half-sister of sorts, I can see Nui doing her own thing.

If Junketsu was trying to do to her what he did to Ryuuko then she must have some incredibly force of will to resist it.

I agree. Remember how after the battle at Osaka, Satsuki was pretty exhausted from trying to keep control over Junketsu and indeed, had to be assisted out of it.

We will finally get the Final decisive fight between Satsuki and Ryuuko, I was afraid that we wouldn’t after Satsuki’s rebellion. Certainly didn’t expect it to happen This way…

Before Satsuki’s capture and Ryuuko’s being knocked out, I had been thinking the two of them would fight, only Satsuki would be the one whom Ragyou “converted” to fight for her instead of against her. Doing the whole 180-thing is what surprised me, but makes it more interesting.

Hakama huh… that’s interesting actually. I kind of doubt it’s Junketsu’s influence. Perhaps it’s some sort of subconscious attempt at emulating her older sister by Ryuuko?

I’m not sure, but I figure those pants have to mean something.

I have to say that I feel incredibly sorry for Ryuuko.

Yeah, so do I. While Satsuki has been the more interesting character, what has happened to Ryuuko is tragic.

To be quite honest I was quite annoyed with Elite Four’s behaviour, they didn’t even try to talk to Ryuuko, just discarded her like a broken toy they had no more use for.

Actually, I was surprised that all of Nudist Beach were ready to return to Osaka once they’d rescued Satsuki. Sure, Ryuuko had pretty much abandoned them and Senketsu, but it just seemed a bit cold not to even mention Ryuuko when they were about to depart, just prior to Ryuuko’s attack.

Indeed, so far while Nui was supporting Ragyo she was quite a bit of a loose cannon that marched to her own drummer (or whatever the phrase is). In episode 18 Ragyo seemed annoyed that Nui delayed her meeting with Ryuuko. If Ragyo proves insufficient as the Big Bad Nui might just off her. Ragyo already has a bad track record of her daughters trying to butcher her

I agree. Remember how after the battle at Osaka, Satsuki was pretty exhausted from trying to keep control over Junketsu and indeed, had to be assisted out of it.

How could I forget? That scene was even more shocking than the Life fiber reveal later. Who knows, maybe her “lost girl” look was from Junketsu managing to override some of her early-childhood memories and she was left in that state for a minute or two?

Before Satsuki’s capture and Ryuuko’s being knocked out, I had been thinking the two of them would fight, only Satsuki would be the one whom Ragyou “converted” to fight for her instead of against her. Doing the whole 180-thing is what surprised me, but makes it more interesting.

I thought the same, Trigger made it a point to show how hard it was for Satsuki to control Junketsu and I thought that she would finally lose control and Ryuuko would have to save her. Then episode 18 happened.

Yeah, so do I. While Satsuki has been the more interesting character, what has happened to Ryuuko is tragic.

Definitely, I’m fascinated by Satsuki on an intellectual level and I really admire her but my sympathy and compassion is with Ryuuko who just can’t get a break.

Exactly that, not even Mikisugi mentioned her. It was like she was already dead to them and they couldn’t care less about her. The next episode interests me, what will win over? WIll Satsuki see Ryuuko as a threat to the plan of defeating Ragyo and will try to eliminate her. Or will the sisterly part of her win over and she will try to save Ryuuko? Heavens know that the thing Ryuuko Really needs right now is someone who would hug her and tell her she isn’t a monster.

          A three-on-one fight then, eh? ^_^

I actually wouldn’t be surprised if after a clash of weapons, something akin to what you describe happens, whereupon Ryuuko regains control of herself.

I believe that the hakama is a sort of “complete form” given to Junketsu as a mental image born from Ryuuko’s personality, just as the common image of a “delinquent girl”, wearing those long skirts or uniforms with a coat with a menacing number of kanji written on it. I know it is not a skirt, but it gives the same “feeling” to me.

So… The perfect form from Satsuki+Senketsu would be “Perfect Class Rep”? XD (It can happen if we take into account the will of Senketsu to assist Satsuki and free Ryuuko, but maybe not as they don’t share such a bond as Senketsu+Ryuuko).

Also it will not be a surprise if one of the blades/half-scissor goes to Satsuki and thus some future big battle climaxes on a dual combo attack of the two scissor-sisters XD (dirty jokes aside? haha).

At this point I see some resemblance of the history to that of Devil May Cry 3 (Ryuuko=Dante? and Satsuki=Vergil?), but in a minimal amount.

I hadn’t considered that, but considering how Ryuuko was certainly acting the part of a “yankee” while in Junketsu, you have a good point.

      *LOL* Maybe so, maybe so.

      I’m not versed on that franchise, so I couldn’t say. ^_^;;;

Told you there was a lot of plot twist ^^

Anyways… The naked sun ship kinda reference and really gave me a déjà vu of seeing team gurren’s ‘dai gurren’ especially the shape.

Also nui was a bit freaky when she screamed and I was not expecting her to be a hybrid…

I’m personally looking forward to satsuki and senketsu performing a life fibre synchronisation also the role reversal is rather nice and ryuko makes quite a gd antagonist

      That you did. ^_^

Well, with as many nods back to that anime that KILL la KILL has (from what I’m told), I’m not surprised.

Also nui was a bit freaky when she screamed and I was not expecting her to be a hybrid…

Nor was I expected that, but I was not surprised that she was unharmed.

Yeah, I do like this role reversal thing. Keeps things interesting.

      • Aki says:

Well they did make gurren lagaan and haven’t really produced anything in years, so I’m not surprised that kill la kill is amazing and is still interesting with all the plot twist and build up… It’s like they are releasing their entire bottled up creativity
