First Look: Tsubasa RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE DVD Vol. 1

Thanks to the folks at FUNimation for sending me an advanced copy of Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Vol. 1!. ^_^

Content wise, the first DVD contains episodes 1-5 of the series. So this gets us to the first world of the Hanshin Republic. The subtitles do contain the Japanese honorifics as expected. Those wondering if “hime” would be used in the subtitles should know that it is translated as “Princess” (which is expected since FUNimation rarely goes too “otaku” even in its subtitles). As for the nicknames Fai give Kurogane, those all appear to survive the subtitles, but the ones I noticed in the dub are just made up cutesy names. I’m guessing that will disappoint some fans, but at least they survive the subtitles.

Extras:

Cast Auditions — This is where we get to hear audio clippings from the English auditions of the cast members trying out for their parts.
Character Guide — This has character sketches and information about the different characters in the show.
World Guild — This has sketches of the different worlds (Kingdom of Clow, Hanshin Republic) some characters there, some locations in those worlds, costumes characters change into, and the Kudan.
Faces in the Crowd — I had thought that we might get several faces, but instead, all we got was Touya and his ties to Cardcaptor Sakura. That was disappointing.

The Textless Songs & Trailers are pretty standard fare.

Here are a couple of other snapshots I took of the DVD and the back image of the DVD cover art.

So why didn’t they use the Japanese names Fay gives to Kurogane in the English? I like them.

That’s a decision the director of the English dub would have to make. Generally, most English dub fans don’t about little things like that and will take the Americanized stuff with no problem. Still, as I stated, we get Fai’s cutesy honorifics in the subtitles. ^_^
