Miles makes it back to Briggs and lets Buccaneer know about the missing Ed and Kimblee. Meanwhile, Hohenheim arrives at Lior and after a meal, he inquires about the cult that started the riot. Rose and her boss lead Hohenheim underground, where the water has become poisonous. Having Rose and the man wait, he makes it to the tunnel that Sloth built and encounters Pride, who immediately attacks. Hohenheim retreats to the tunnel Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42he created to get there and discovers this homunculus is limited to the giant tunnel and the center of Central City. After a brief chat, Hohenheim tells Pride to let Father know that Slave 23 is coming, something relayed immediately to Father.

At Briggs, the forces of Drachma march on the fort and are aided by Kimblee, who lets the Drachma general know that his men will turn on the Briggs troops and cause chaos. Elsewhere, Zampano calls Central and reports to Envy that Marcoh is hiding in the city of Asbec.

Thoughts/Review:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42Well now, well now. I didn’t expect to see Rose again but it was nice. She seems so confident now despite all of the bad stuff she’s been through with the exposure of Father Cornello as a fraud and the subsequent riots that happened which seriously damaged Lior. She wasn’t lugging some baby around either, which I seem to remember in the first anime series. I wonder if Rose plays a bigger role in the future or if this was just an extended cameo role.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42Regardless, Hohenheim’s trip to Sloth’s tunnel showed that Pride has limits. He can travel around the tunnel with his shadow form and he can move about in parts of Central City (if I understood correctly). Well, now we know why Pride hasn’t unmasked some of the conspiracies against Father — he’s limited. Heck, not being able to leave the tunnel means he cannot monitor what transpires in Briggs or anywhere else. I would guess that his threat on Riza is legit though.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42Still, why has it taken Hohenheim so long to take any action against the homunculi? He is the most powerful alchemist there is as far as I can tell with his ability to transmute at will without doing anything obvious to cause the transmutations. Granted, as a living philosopher’s stone, he’s going to be more powerful but I didn’t expect him to have a walkway created under his feet as he walked down the underground waterway. That’s pretty impressive.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42Of course if he battles Father, it would be an even match as best as I can tell.

It was interesting seeing the Drachma forces. The people from Xing seem Chinese to me and the Drachma seem Russian. I’m guessing this is on purpose to emulate Earth.

Anyway, I can’t help but think that the people of Briggs may Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42have already prepared for dealing with Kimblee’s men turning on them. I suppose it really doesn’t matter if Briggs repells the attack from Drachma or not since it is blood that has to be shed for the transmutation circle to be completed. It is interesting that Kimblee already had contact with the people of Drachma and apparently enough influence to get them to attack Briggs.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42Well, it seems my initial suspicions about the Chimera and their rapid conversion were well founded. I know, I know. Last episode, I had decided to go ahead and trust them but hey, I can’t always be right. ^_~ Well, the two with Ed may be OK, but with Zampano having a direct line to the Führer’s office to squeal, he certainly doesn’t seem OK. Still, in addition to playing trickery with the audience, it is nice to see Envy brought back into the mix.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42Finally, there’s Mei Chan’s solving of Scar’s brother’s notes. Take them apart and make a transmutation circle out of them.

What?

OK, I know that certain keywords like “gold” were used to group papers together but how do you sort them as they did? I’m completely lost on that one and it smacked rather Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42convenient that by spreading the papers of the notebook out in a certain way, somehow linking certain keywords to help make the arrangement, one could get a transmutation circle. Further, how twisted was Scar’s brother to come up with this insanity? This is the most complex puzzles I’ve ever seen because the notes had to be written so that someone would figure out spreading out the Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42papers in an overlapping, specific patter, then flip everything over to reveal the true solution to the riddle.

*_*

My head is spinning. Maybe I shouldn’t have watched this when tired. ^_^;

All that aside, I get the notion that Scar’s brother figured out Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood - 42that Amestris was being turned into a giant transmutation circle. So, when I remember that Father had no control over alkahestry when Mei Chan and Scar used it in his lair, it stands to reason that an alkahestry circle might counter whatever Father is planning. Question is, if I’m right, how do they go about making these changes?

One more thing — at least an explanation was given as to the removal of the dirt from Sloth’s tunnel. *lol*

There’s a lot happening on multiple fronts and this anime series continues to be very good. ^_^

yes its nice to see envy again that jerk has not been seen for 10 episodes he should make things more intresting

Yeah, the reverse notes thing, you’ve got it as good as it’s gonna get. It was a stretch…it was a stretch in the manga too. That’s how it is. But it needed to happen somehow, and at least it’s not totally insane…nonetheless all later events of this story will make up for any convenient craziness just now…like chapter 104 *dies* That.will.be.awesome. As will everything else from here on out.

  3. Merc says:

Lol, I actually consider Scar’s brother’s code one of the least complicated in the series (maybe because they worked it out so quickly, but still). It took Ed and Al days to work out Marcoh’s Philosopher Stone notes that were hidden in a bunch of cookbooks; in earlier chapters of the manga, Al explains that all alchemists have their own code and he can’t understand Ed’s (Ed writes his notes in the form of a travel log); Roy uses the names of different women he’s “dated” for his, and Hawkeye-sensei obviously has his own code written all over Riza’s back.

@Fun — I’d actually forgotten about him until this episode, when we got to see an image of all the homunculi.

@Anon — It is a stretch, but it was by no means a deal breaker for me.

@Merc — When Ed and Al worked out the code in the cookbook, it made sense to me because hiding the code in the cookbook may have taken more time to decipher, but real hidden messages have been hidden in similar fashion.

That said, to write a book that had to also be a puzzle to map out two different transmutation circles when laid out properly is massively complex. I still don’t see how one even remotely begins to line up the pages just right based on certain key terms. If you just took “gold,” which other page mentioning “gold” do you line it up with and where specifically do you line it up? That’s why it is massively complex and as I see it, a real stretch.

However, the series is so good that this instance of stretching credibility can be overlooked IMO. ^_^

Sorry astro Rose wont be doing much

However she will be appearing a little bit more but that’s it….

Hoenheim walking thorugh the platform …BADASS who else agrees!?

also you may or may not be wrong about the chimeras! But! I’m not saying anything

woohoo Marcoh’s Cool moment in the manga is next episode along with Envy’s *censored for spoilers*

(no not his death…if that’s what you were thinking)

    and Yoki……still useless (hahaha)

  6. evgeni says:

Guys, maybe you haven’t noticed it, but in this episode there is some small proof that Hoenhaim has at least some Xing connections.

But I won’t say where is this proof. I want to see if anyone managed to find it.

  7. AstroNerdBoy says:

I know in episode 41, the anime pretty much stated that Hohenheim is the Philosopher of the West. I didn’t catch a further connection this episode though (not off the top of my head).

  8. Anonymous says:

no the thing with pride is just that he(selim) was too far away, and could not stretch his shadows any further while in central. if he leaves central though…

  9. Anonymous says:

It’s not ‘gold’ with ‘gold’. They noticed that were a LOT of references to things like gold and immortality said in strange ways, so they laid each pair on top of the other. Once set, a circle is drawn by connecting larger circles through the smaller circles connected to them.

Also, we’ll see a bit more of Rose, but not too much.

  10. GhostStalker says:

Yeah, Rose doesn’t have a baby in the manga, and therefore the new series, because she was never raped by Amestrian soldiers as was implied in the first anime series.

As for the chimera, all I can say is . I will say that I had the same reaction as you did when Zanpano called Envy, mainly because it was at the end of a chapter and we had a month to stew in our indignation.

  11. AstroNerdBoy says:

My plan is to watch episode 43 this week. It will be interesting having Envy back in the mix.
