Urusei Yatsura Ep. 179 review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Urusei Yatsura - 179Sakura dreams of being a child playing with youkai during the fall when she’s awoken to an autumn morning and customers who want her to exorcise a spirit out of their sake measuring barrel. After consuming a rice cooker full of rice, Sakura performs the exorcism, only to have the snake spirit enter her. At the Mendou estate, Shuutaro prepares for an outdoor tea ceremony while Lum and Ataru happen to meet with Sakura in town and after nearly purchasing beer from a vending machine, she explains that she consumed a sake spirit and has to deny it what it wants to get it to leave. Since she’s been invited to Shuutaro’s tea ceremony along with Lum, they head there with Ataru inviting himself. Shuutaro is forced to allow Ataru to attend and Sakura thinks that all should be well with the spirit within her.

Urusei Yatsura - 179Shuutaro serves tea and desserts to the group, including Shinobu, when a drunk Onsen-sensei comes up, drawing her ire. Fujinami surfs in and steals the desserts. Sakura smells something and leaves to find Shuutaro’s father, Kotatsu-neko, the headmaster, and Fujinami drinking wine. Sakura can’t help herself and joins in the drinking, becoming possessed by the snake. Cherry arrives but isn’t much help and is forced to summon a giant frog and a giant slug. While this causes the snake to free Sakura to keep an eye on the frog and slug, the group is trapped between the three giant beasts as the removal of any one will result in the others attacking.  With that, Shuutaro has instant ramen cups distributed and the group eats, resigned to their fate.

Thoughts/Review:

You know, you just have to laugh when the headmaster addresses Kotatsu-neko as “Kota-chan” but because these ancient subtitles MUST not have “chan” in them, we get the full-on “Kotatsu-neko.” *_*  But, I digress…

Urusei Yatsura - 179

The episode was mostly “meh.” The funniest part came from Sakura’s three male customers going into shock at the sheer volume of food she consumed for breakfast.

Urusei Yatsura - 179

Sakura trying to avoid adult beverages and constantly being tempted was mildly amusing. Her outdrinking the guys was mildly amusing, but nothing to write home about.

Urusei Yatsura - 179

In the end, the episode really went nowhere and thus was mostly boring.

    This was one of those episodes where the beginning makes you think that the story is going to be about those monsters she played with as a kid returning to her adult life when in fact, the beginning was pretty much a filler.

    Yeah, that’s true. The whole intro had no role in the rest of the story other than to establish (for new viewers) Sakura’s supernatural nature and that apparently, things happen in autumn. ^_^;
