Fairy Tail Volume 44Highlights from this volume begin with Tempest and Jackal being reborn Minerva being modified as a demon hybrid. Cana saves the members of Fairy Tail by putting them all in cards, saving them from Seilah’s bomb. Happy, Carla, and Panther Lilly take the cards to Tartaros’s cube base, allowing them to attack. Erza gets freed and battles Kyouka as Mirajane is revived. Zeref reveals himself to Natsu as Mirajane battles Seilah.

Lucy and Wendy find the control room for Tartaros’s cube, where they are confronted by Black Archbishop Keyes and Franmalth. Franmalth consumes Aries and Taurus, gaining their powers. Natsu comes in to battle Franmalth, so Franmalth changes his form to Master Hades, having consumed that soul as well.

Wendy goes to find the cavern where Face is, only to be confronted by Doujigiri from Tartaros. Thanks to the winds from Face, Wendy is able to take a page from Natsu’s book and consumes enough wind to defeat Doujigiri and destroy Face. However, this does not stop the countdown. Carla has a way to stop it, but apparently it will end their lives. After vowing to be friends in the next life, Carla does her thing, but she and Wendy are saved by Doranbalt.

So, Wendy gets a chance to shine in this volume, shifting from mostly a support person to one with enough power to defeat a demon. Since she’s supposed to be a dragon slayer, I’ve got no problem seeing her get stronger and be able to fight better. Plus, she does look pretty awesome on the cover of this volume with her lavender colored hair and look on her face that says, “I’m going to put my foot up your…!” 😉

This volume had quite a number of fights all over as action is the name of the game. I enjoyed seeing Erza come back to get some payback for what had been done to her in the previous volume. I loved the look on Mirajane’s face when she faced Seilah, though their fight didn’t do much.

It is interesting that Zeref contacted Natsu. I’m curious to know where that goes.

As to Lucy apparently losing Aries and Taurus, I suspect that they’ll come back somehow.

I suppose Master Hades pseudo return is tied to Fairy Tail Zero. I say that because he was part of Fairy Tail’s founding and learned magic from Zeref. Plus, I think Mashima-sensei has a thing for that character.

Otherwise, in terms of the story, there isn’t much I’d want to comment on. There’s a ton of action and the Face aspect of the story is apparently resolved, but little else in terms of plot progress. We’ll see where things go from here.
