Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha ViVid episode 11

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid - 11Einhart underestimates Corona’s training and desperate desire to win this fight against her to prove herself a worthy member of Team Nakajima. As such, Corona is able to get damage on Einhart. She further surprises Einhart by using her abilities to perfectly mimic techniques from Rio and Vivio. However, once Einhart sees this, she is easily able to handle Corona’s attacks. In desperation, Corona uses a technique to keep herself going, despite the massive damage she’s taken, which Einhart recognizes from her genetic memories. Einhart survives this with little problem, so Corona goes back to her Golem magic, but Einhart knocks her out.

Thoughts/Review:

Man, this episode was agony, more so because it was clearly just dragging out the inevitable. As I said in the last episode,

As to Corona, I already feel sorry for her. I know she’s going to lose. You know she’s going to lose. She knows she’s going to lose. However, we’re supposed to be happy that she will last longer than expected against Einhart, as evidenced by her getting that first hit to allow her to (apparently) summon a golem.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid - 11

There was no way in the world Corona was going to win, and the fake “drama” trying to force some, “Oh, Corona has a chance” just made me want to put my eyes out.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid - 11

I get that they are trying to show that the weak Corona has a little spunk in her. To be honest, I don’t mind showing her giving it her all. She proved she has heart and determination.  However, the whole time I’m watching this episode, I’m just rolling my eyes and going, “OK, so when does Einhart finally put Corona out of her misery?”

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid - 11

Seriously, this fight was just unbelievable. When Einhart faced Vivio, who’s stronger than Corona, she had no trouble kicking Vivio’s keester. Remember, Einhart is the one who was attacking a lot of people at the beginning, so much so that she was considered a threat.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid - 11

I can give one to Corona, that in her programming her Device to allow her to perfectly mimic Vivio’s and Rio’s fighting techniques. However, that’s a minor pause as the moment Einhart realized it, that was it. Plus, those techniques had never defeated Einhart before, so there was no reason for them to now.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid - 11

Corona’s not a battle mage, nor should she be. She does seem perfect for a supporting role though, and even that of a tactician. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. She should be encouraged to do the things she’s best at and not feel like a loser just because she’s not going to be an ace like Einhart or Vivio. Not everyone can be the star.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid - 11

So wait, there’s only one more episode? There’s no way that this tournament can end in one more episode. This seems like a terrible place to end a series, even if they are planning to do a sequel (which I’ve seen no news of, nor does there seem to be a continuation of this series in the summer cour). I suppose we could get an aftermath episode where Einhart respects Corona and they become true friends as well as having Vivio and Rio fawn over how much stronger Corona has become. We’ll see.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid - 11

In the end, I’m probably going to get some hate for “hating” on this episode, but hey, we all have our likes and dislikes. As I’ve said, I don’t like tournament story arcs because to me, they are fairly predictable, boring, and are only used to have characters show off techniques, spout cliched stuff, act tough, and maybe show their fighting spirit (Corona in this episode). The underdog will always show a surprise or two, but then the one whom everyone knows is going to win does so in he end. To me, that is not interesting storytelling.

I completely agree with your thoughts. I love the Nanoha series to death, but this episode was just blargh. Agony is indeed a good descriptor.

I miss the simple, if crowded, fun of the earlier Nanoha series. ViVid started that way, but this tournament is just “ugh.”

You want advice astro? When the series finished, read the manga, for whatever reason there are only 54 chapters out in English while in Japan they are … Chapter 75-80 WTF! The scanlation are late but obviously fansubs keep coming out chapters. Anyway the tournament is over in the scans that have been translating.

But I will confirm, the anime will not end the tournament. However, it is a shame that they did not at least, adapted the sublime struggle between vivio and Miura!

I added only it seems that in the last episode of the season, there is talk of a break before a future return. We must therefore expect u “Vivid season 2” which will continue the tournament and will chain the following arcs I think. They just want to give advance manga, before continuing the distribution of anime later in my opinion

u want advice astro? When the series finished, read the manga

It has been on my list of titles to read (both ViVid and Force manga series).

I’ve got to watch the last episode this weekend.

Why are there no boy characters in this show vivio’s age? Why couldn’t she have a rival or a sidekick that’s a boy? I find the lack of boys in this show concerning and why are they not in tournament? It would be if the new breed of mahou shoujo was more gender balanced like in 80’s and 90s but that’s what happens when people shut themselves off to the outside world for creativity and inspiration.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

There are no boys because this is not a shoujo title. It is a seinen title, meaning its demographics are young men. Young men want to see babes, and of course some young men (or even old men) are lolicons and want to see young babes.

When Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha was spun off of the hentai visual novel series Triangle Heart, it did have a token male in it. He was eventually dropped and while another token male was introduced in StrikerS (and who had cameos in ViVid, the target male audience isn’t interested in seeing males, so females it is.

  4. uvirina says:

that reason you stated is why I long for a girly mahou shoujo to show the otaku ones how to do it right. at least with shows like corrector yui pretear and sailor moon there was a sophisticated maturity about them that the otaku shows don’t have and the main female character was allowed to have a life outside of her magical powers. besides mai hime and princess tutu were for male audiences and both girls fell for guys in their respective shows and no one was whining on forums or blogs about how duck and mai should randomly be into other girls just because. I’m not saying your wrong just an observation.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I have never seen Princess Tutu so I can’t speak to that, but remember that in the Mai-HiME series, the girls could not become physical with a male without losing their abilities. As such, the girls remained pure, therefore otaku fantasies could be such that they could still think of the girls as their waifu, concocting a story to get to that point (beyond me, but there you go). I could be wrong (it has been ages since I watched), but didn’t Mai-Otome have even less males in it?

Regardless, those in charge of the Nanoha franchise wanted less males, and that’s what they did, much as those in charge of the Prisma Illya franchise (Fate/kaleid liner PRISMA☆ILLYA) wanted only one male.
