Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R 05 Review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Komugi scores her first speaking role in a drama, but when the president of her agency discovers Komugi has a 0 on a recent test, she pulls Komugi from the part. Komugi’s and Kokona’s manager explain that when the president was an idol, she wasn’t able to have a school life and so wants Komugi to do well. Kokona suggests a study party at Komugi’s house on the following day, which Komugi agrees to. That night, Komugi decides she needs to make a cake instead of study while at the dorm, Kokona is in the giant bath with Tsukasa and invites her to the party. Tsukasa doesn’t want to have anything to do with Komugi, but when she learns that Yuuta will be teaching them, she changes her mind, even secretly making macaroons to take.

At the study session, Komugi’s mother provides bentos for everyone. When Komugi starts slacking off, Yuuta forces her to study. Tsukasa gets very jealous of how close Komugi and Yuuta are, even if it is only in an older brother-younger sister role. This is noticed by Kokona. When Komugi brings in her cake, no one wants to touch it, so Komugi gets her brother to eat it. They discover Tsukasa’s macarons, which are great, though Tsukasa claims they were simply a gift. When the study party is over, Kokona arranges for a group picture to be taken with Tsukasa next to Yuuta. The next day, Komugi gets through her tests, but during her English test, a monster attacks. Kokona, having finished, rushes out to become Maid-chan. Usa-P forced Komugi to join, but Maid-chan needs to help from Magical Nurse. Returning to class, Komugi finishes her test, but answered everything on the wrong line. Her teacher agrees to accept this if Komugi agrees to Spartan training (physical exercise).

Thoughts/Review:

To date, Nurse Witch Komugi-chan R has been merely average at best. However, this episode actually had me laughing out loud.

“Love is like a booger. You pick and pick at it, then when you get it, you wonder how to get rid of it.” 😆

Seriously, did the folks at Tatsunoko Production get trolled by some American (or other native English speaker) into making the above English sentence for a fictional Japanese middle school English class? I was so surprised by this, I laughed out loud at the audaciousness of it.

With the laughs starting, I then also had to laugh at Komugi praising the 1/4 American Tsukasa for great English. For starters, Tsukasa’s seiyuu spoke the words like she had marbles in her mouth. She’s supposedly from L.A., which I didn’t buy for a moment. On top of that, the outrageousness of the English sentence, which clearly none of them even knew the meaning of, just made the whole thing ridiculous, but funny.

While the series has been doing mild Detective Conan parodies with the drama series that the characters appear in within the anime, this episode made things a bit more overt by having Komugi’s little brother dress up (he has a crush on Kokona) and look like a Conan-kun cosplayer. 😆

While Komugi’s cake is supposed to be for laughs (and it was amusing), I did like how it played into Tsukasa’s story, where she so wants to be like a girl, but has to pretend to be butch and tomboyish. She made the macarons that everyone loved, but she couldn’t reveal that. For her sake, I’m glad Yuuta figured it out and told Kokona and Komugi, even though none of them revealed they discovered this to Tsukasa.

As for Tsukasa, I can’t help but be amused at her jealousy of Komugi’s close, but non-romantic, relationship with Yuuta. At the same time, I can’t help but want to see her get her wish to be with Yuuta and to be allowed to be the girl she wants to be.

The weakness of the episode is the need to have the monster of the week. It was really a distraction from the Komugi story line of whether her studies pay off or not.

In the end, this was the funniest story of the series, whether it intended to be or not. It was also the cutest story, thanks to Tsukasa’s crush on Yuuta.
