in weekly magazine 30 (this issue)→out
in→Bessatsu magazine november issue( the issue sold on 9th October)

Thanks! I would have likely missed those other two messages.

Update #1: OK, so this is the END of the weekly manga series. It is shifting to a monthy manga magazine called Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine (whether with the same title or a new title, I don’t know). And it appears the Japanese spoiler source isn’t buying the new magazine and won’t be providing new spoilers, but I could be wrong there.

So, those of us who thought the manga was ending, we were correct in a sense. Akamatsu-sensei seems to be wrapping things up. I strongly suspect the MotB storyline will be done by the time the manga shifts to the new magazine. And over there, I strongly suspect harem hijinks and the like.

OK, now that I’ve gathered my thoughts, here’s what I think is going on (and someone can correct me if I’m wrong).

  1. UQ Holder is ending immediately in Weekly Shounen Magazine. I think this is the last weekly chapter to be published (chapter 128).
  2. The current story arc will apparently be resolved.
  3. An anime is being done. Whether a TV series or an OAD, I don’t know.
  4. The new UQ Holder series (which I presume will get a new title name, since that has been the pattern for other shounen weekly titles I’ve known of that have shifted to monthly) will start up in on on Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine October 9! So yes, no UQ Holder for a while.

Well, more info as it happens. Pretty shocking turn of events for the series.

Update #2: Images.

UQ HOLDER Chapter 128

So it appears that Touta is only witnessing events of the past, not actually there to be a student or something. Good. I’m all down with that.

  1. DerGilga says:

I made some small mistakes and there is a forth comment, I posted an updated version at the usual place. Last time and I made such a blunder T.T

  2. dman says:

That’s crazy there’s so much stuff to be answered in Uq holders and sensei never introduced the other Uq characters .

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

They *might* get introduced in the new monthly series. I wouldn’t hold my breath though.

  3. Yue Ayase says:

So…. did they time travel to the past? Hmmm… Not sure I like this turn of events, both in and out of series.

Animated adaptation? Well, we’ll see. I’m skeptical.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I’m thinking they may have gone to a version of CE, but who knows for sure.

      • Yue Ayase says:

At least the rest of UQ does something in this chapter… But I feel like Ken is forcing Touta into the Negima timeline a little too hard. I guess it depends on what happens. If Asuna is appearing then it is directly into the timeline of the previous series rather than after the end of it.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I think he’s trying to resolve the Negima stuff, but I’ll get a better feel once I see the chapter.

  4. Mattcgw says:

YESSSSSS!!! I’m the smuggest bastard in the World right now.
I’ve saying for half a year that Sensei needs to monthly, it terrific considering the monthly editorial only has concerne themselves with Akamatsu and Isayama, which in turn means his anime adaptation will given the money it needs and probably a good anime studio.

With that in mind I expect Bones to do it, Hero Academy is rather short but deals with the same societal aspects of inequality and the main protagonist look similar.
I wonder whether this is also a reason for Fairy Tails 2nd anime stopping impromptu as it did.
    Also, Sensei can show Tits!

Best part of it is that he doesn’t have time to screw up negima’s storyline any further because he doesn’t have the time in a year do so, as well as you can you giving UQ holder a single track when you can sit storyline much like claymore.

Therefore he’s back to is monthly publishing schedule for his volumes, and we all enjoy the chapters more.

To be honest, moving to Bessatsu is quite an upgrade considering (it has attack on titan)
    http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=12660

    • Yue Ayase says:

Other than Karin there’s really no tits worth seeing. I kinda wonder if he’s scaling back a bit because this series is…. quite frankly, not at all popular.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, it has no where near the popularity of Love Hina or Negima. I attribute that to the fact that his writing style shifted to a traditional, devil may care shounen style with only a loose overarching plot. In Love Hina, outside of the introduction of Keitaro’s half-sister, the manga was pretty nicely scripted. In Negima, more so until the end when it was, “OK, let’s just end this and have done.” That ending is also a reason why I think UQ Holder didn’t do as well.

        • Yue Ayase says:

The lack of character development hurts UQ, which is strange when you consider how small the cast is compared to MSN. The story has some interesting points about it but they get put on the backburner for sometimes less interesting things.

I really don’t like the way Ken has handled Santa. At all.

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

The lack of character development hurts UQ, which is strange when you consider how small the cast is compared to MSN.

This is true. I had this complaint of Negima as well, but it was more understandable there because of the large cast. When UQH started and introduced Kuroumaru, I had hoped that the character would be the substitute for Setsuna and explore the Crow/Raven Tribe. I had hoped that with Eva coming over and Touta being made immortal, we’d have an exploration of being an immortal, which was something I felt that Akamatsu-sensei wanted to explore in Negima, but couldn’t.

I really don’t like the way Ken has handled Santa. At all.

I’m curious to hear more of your thoughts on this.

          • Yue Ayase says:

I like Santa a lot as a character. I enjoyed his arc, his development within said arc and the fact he joined UQ. After that he’s done basically nothing. When Kotaro joined Negi’s team, sometimes he disappeared but he got his own fair share of the spotlight (especially thanks to Natsumi), but Santa is just a background character while super Touta takes center stage. I liked the chemistry Santa and Kirie had, but Kirie is now Touta’s reset button and cheat code.

Like most of UQ, I’d love to see them interact with the Negima characters, whether past or present. Maybe hook Santa up with Sayo? Who knows. I guess as a whole I’ve been disappointed at how most of the cast of UQ has been put into the background save the two MCs and Kirie.

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

After that he’s done basically nothing.

            Yeah, that’s true. 🙁

I guess as a whole I’ve been disappointed at how most of the cast of UQ has been put into the background save the two MCs and Kirie.

Well, that is the problem. I’d love to see characters fleshed out, but thus far, that hasn’t happened.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

In terms of the anime, I expect Shaft to still have the contract for Akamatsu-sensei’s work.

  5. dominic says:

Maybe are the CHAPTER LONGER then

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

In a monthly series, the chapters would be about 24 pages or so.

      • ffsch says:

err so chapter is 1.5x longer but we have to wait 4x longer… i consider this bad.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

The chapters could be longer than 24 pages, as some have pointed out to me. It would be awesome if we could get 40 pages/month.

  6. nt122 says:

maybe he is ending UQHolder! not quite like the way we think, he might actually be thinking of trying to explain what happened by bringing back negima in a sort of revival by bringing Touta to the past?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

That would be strange in a way.

      • nt122 says:

Not really, he really seems to want to continue Negima, or perhaps, this was actually planned from the start?
That would explain the story behind them getting Nagi back in that epilogue. Of course, why would they not remember Touta, is possibly that once he goes back, everyone forgets about him.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

Not really, he really seems to want to continue Negima, or perhaps, this was actually planned from the start?

Certainly after the road trip arc was abruptly ended for the “clear the underground” arc, whereby Touta went from nobody to mastering a gravity sword weighing tons and tons in no time, that’s when I figured Touta was to become the surrogate for Negi.

  7. NML says:

I wonder if it’ll get a new title. Vinland Saga moved from Weekly Shonen Magazine to monthly magazine and didn’t get a new title.

    I’m excited for the anime.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Ah. That’s good to know. I thought of xxxHOLiC, which when it moved to a monthly magazine, it took a new name.

  8. Yue Ayase says:

I’d like to know some anime details but we probably won’t know for some time. The hiatus will be painful, also I can’t imagine many UQ fans being happy with Touta suddenly being put into the Negima timeline by himself. It can be handled well but I’m a little worried that all the UQ plotlines will be halted/stalled/forgotten. If the entire cast of UQH (sans Eva) got put into the Negima timeline I think that would work better. Touta on his own can’t hold up a manga and the other characters (especially Santa) have been very neglected. If it only lasts for a few chapters then that’s fine but we likely won’t see the rest of UQ until spring 2017.

I’m cautiously optimistic here but it feels like a bit of a let down. I really don’t want to see this series fail and I’m hoping an anime can boost its rating.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

also I can’t imagine many UQ fans being happy with Touta suddenly being put into the Negima timeline by himself.

I know we are all just speculating on what we’ve been shown. However, I can’t help but wonder if this will be a “show” of Negi’s past, and a way to explain certain things in the present. I’ve also wondered if it might be like a Cosmo Entelecheia world.

I really don’t want to see this series fail and I’m hoping an anime can boost its rating.

Well, these days, an anime title is pretty much an advertisement for a manga series.

      • Yue Ayase says:

It could be, it’s hard to say at this point. But since it is switching to a monthly series it will feel a lot longer. I don’t think it gets wrapped up in 1 or 2 chapters. Also if the format is switched what happens to the current standoff between Negi’s party and UQH? I really don’t want that to go away. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

  9. Izayoi Arashi says:

Yo Astro. Just saw this post and I just want to correct something:

    1. UQ Holder is not ending immediately. It will temporarily go on hiatus since it will move to the Bessatsu Mag this November.
And ( probably) dish out chapters before the move during that timespan.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I made a clarification to my remark there. I meant to indicate that chapter 128 was the final weekly chapter and that there would be no more weekly chapters published. 🙂 Everything I’ve been told is that there are no more chapters after 128 in Weekly Shounen Magazine, unless you know something different.

      • Izayoi Arashi says:

Its my error for not notcing that. sorry. Anyway, Lets just play by ear and wait for more incoming announcements. Considering that Big announcement, that was a surprise, considering that Negima’s anime was separated into OAD’s. But, since it was just announced, What bugs me more is WHICH studio would head the production of the anime. my statement to this is:

Lets just wait for more incoming announcements regarding the both anime and manga. your posts have been EXTREMELY helpful whenever a chapter spoiler and chapter comes out. Keep up the good work!

PS. knowing the old cast of Voice actors in the Negima OAD’s i wonder if Evangeline’s VA will return for this one.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

Its my error for not notcing that. sorry.

You’re good. I’m glad you pointed it out to me because the way it was written, it could be misconstrued.

What bugs me more is WHICH studio would head the production of the anime.

My bet is on Shaft. 😉

your posts have been EXTREMELY helpful whenever a chapter spoiler and chapter comes out. Keep up the good work!

          Thanks. ^_^

PS. knowing the old cast of Voice actors in the Negima OAD’s i wonder if Evangeline’s VA will return for this one.

If Shaft gets it, it wouldn’t surprise me if her old seiyuu shows up to do the voice of Eva. However, the voice of Yukihime is one I can imagine being done differently (as in older) because of the disguise nature of Yukihime’s appearance.

  10. Mattcgw says:

A series such Claymore benefited from going monthly as Claire’s revenge story arc remain the key drive for the series, thus making it compelling and every chapter mattered.

Also D. Grey Man improved dramaticaly when it went monthly, irrespective of the storyline’s incoherence. And sold 350’000.

A Brides stories, is Once every two months, but every chapter is in a league of it’s own.

I wonder whether Sensei will do two or more 80 page chapters like he did before.
That chapter was amazing and told a solid story, as well as setup.

    • DerGilga says:

      monthly shonen jump……
      author’s sickness…..

      unbelievable at this point…..

      • Mattcgw says:

        Is this a critique @DerGilga?

        • DerGilga says:

nah, see it as an statement of disbelief in the face of utter stupidity,

afterall who would use Claymore as an example of a weekly series going monthly when Claymore startet as a monthly, ended as a monthly and was weekly for only a few chapters because its original magazine was cancled…. something I told you in the past…..

and I’m not disscussing D-Grayman with you anymore

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

I’m only aware of those titles. I’ve never read/watched them.

          • DerGilga says:

Claymore was a well received monthly series puplished in monthly shonen jump, which was discontinued during Claymore’s run.

In a May 2, 2007, letter, Shueisha announced that Claymore takes a month break but it, Gag Manga Biyori, Rosario + Vampire, and Tegami Bachi continued in Weekly Shōnen Jump until the start of the magazine Jump SQ.[5]

If you look at Claymores original run, May 2001 – December 4, 2014, anybody can see that it was a weekly series for only a fraction of its history and the reason why I explained to him already when he made that argument the first time.

And the fact that D.Gray-mans author has/had a serious illness which is the reason for its many hiatus and shift to monthly publication I also explained to him already, with links!. Btw, if you reread his argument about D.Gray-man, you can see how he tries to link the many breaks to its ‘story problems’ when the reason is far sadder. Something like this just pisses me off.

          • Mattcgw says:

@DerGilga I am not trying to link the issues in the of D. Grey Man with how it’s release format changed, only that the story received more progress when it ceased being weekly.
Notable the last 4 chapters. Even if the Mana aspect is incoherent, but the latest volume broke 250’000 and is getting another anime, approximately 13 episodes. http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2016-06-15/japanese-comic-ranking-june-6-12/.103259

I must ask DerGilga are a big D. Grey Man fan?

As well as highlighting how the monthly schedule could improve UQ Holder’s overall story/progression, when compared to other series that have gone through similar alterations.

As to alleviate the concerns some people may hold.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Monthly titles can be done well, no doubt about that. I read a number of them. However, if limited to 24 pages a month, it takes quite a long time to get anywhere.

  11. shadowofthevoid says:

No UQ Holder until October?! Aww. That was the highlight of my Tuesday evenings. Now what am I supposed to do every Tuesday between 8:00 and 8:15 PM for the next four months? At least Akamatsu-sensei’s hot wife finally got the hiatus she demanded. :p

Well, hopefully the switch to a monthly magazine doesn’t mean drastically less content overall. I hope it runs at around the same 40-something pages that its new neighbor Attack on Titan does. Still less than the 60-70 pages we get each month (assuming no holidays or other breaks), but 40-50 pages would still be great.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Now what am I supposed to do every Tuesday between 8:00 and 8:15 PM for the next four months?

Ha!ha! That’s true. I’ve thought that I might try chapter blogging Fairy Tail, but then I had another idea. I haven’t decided what to do yet.

I hope it runs at around the same 40-something pages that its new neighbor Attack on Titan does.

      That would be cool.

      • Mattcgw says:

@AstroNerdBoy You could do reader/commentor recommendations using the 1st volume, for first impressions.
Once again I’d strongly recommend ‘A Brides Story’ or the new JoJo hardbacks, which pretty good or the new ‘Emma’ Hardbacks which magnificent!

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I did volume review the first three volumes of A Brides Story. When the fourth volume went off with some character I wasn’t interested in, I stopped reading the manga. 🙁

          I do have about 50 volumes of manga I haven’t blogged yet. I need to do those. ^_^;;;;

          • Mattcgw says:

@AstroNerdBoy then I will recant my previous suggestion to the JoJo new issue hardbacks or freezing. The phantom blood is quite strong, or I’m just blinded by the Victorian Romance.

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

            Ah. OK.

  12. NML says:

Hmm, I’m wondering when we’re going to get the results of the popularity poll.

Will you be reviewing the anime episodes Astro?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Hmm, I’m wondering when we’re going to get the results of the popularity poll.

      Good question.

Will you be reviewing the anime episodes Astro?

That would be my plan. However, if these are OADs and not a TV series simulstreamed by Crunchyroll, it will depend on who bothers to translate it (if anyone).

  13. sanchi says:

Wanted to scream, but that won’t do anything. Wait till October… 4 months!!!! I’m expecting UQ withdrawals soon!

Yes I agree with Yue and others, that part of the problem was lack of story development. Too much hijinks where anyone reading the manga wouldn’t know what and where the story was going.

Now that its being animated, all of a sudden a new ‘focused’ UQ/Negima and now forced to forget and leave hanging, all the UQ characters we’ve gotten to love, and also including Negi-MotB for now, and bring back class 3-A, Mahora.

I’m thinking Akamatsu and public response wants Negima back more than UQ.

If there is a new manga name, I think forget about UQ till Akamatsu feels it’s worth returning to that time, I’m thinking when Tota becomes a mature and powerful character to wipe Negi-MotB out.

I can imagine Tota being trained in the ‘White” magic of Mars by Asuna. Asuna would probably be pissed off at first, more so with how Tota also has her powers, and her dna, and more so, has Negi’s dna.

Add training from Negi, and having Tota improve and control his M.E skills.

Al may be doing Tota a favor, which makes me wonder again, what is Negi-MotB up too for allowing this.

Tota can’t age any more, so it would be like nothing happened if he returned to the UQ timeline, and Tota appears to just get instantly more powerful/powered up. Imagine Tota coming back when he left, and now as powerful or more powerful than Negi with full control over M.E. and ‘white’ magic of Mars. Negi – inside and separate from the MotB may know this plan. but has kept it from the MotB. I can see Negi planning something like this.

Speaking of timeline, I’m thinking same timeline but in the past, but just before Asuna is sent away, and before anything happened to Negi.

I can imagine Negi (of the past) explaining to Tota what his plan to end the MotB with Tota’s help, which may explain why Nagi is still around, and maybe what he tell’s Tota what Tota needs to do, where Eva may not know about it, and even why Al sent him to the past.

I can imagine where the story can be going, its just the wait!

    • sanchi says:

hmm this time shift may explain all the clones too, and the disappearance of Negi, and his assumed death in 2065. OR a talk between the two about Eva, and Negi explains its not him but Nagi. Then which ships survives or sinks is in question.

    • sanchi says:

Update #2 throws my thoughts in the trash. 🙂 I’m glad its more of him observing, and not crashing/changing the past like he did with Dana. But at the same time, he could use some insight on his own abilities. WIth time travel its never clear if any actions were meant to happen or the other issue – than a unknowingly action causes a major change in future events.

But it also teaches me not to imagine or speculate too much.

The change from weekly to monthly did give me a shock of some negative disappointment of a long wait. But I have to look on the positive side that the story will continue in a publication, than begin dropped completely, and be glad for that.

I’m glad for the announced anime, and hope it doesn’t skip or change too much of what has been drawn, but I would expect some adding of different arcs to it. I’m curious on how they will voice Eva, if they keep one voice or change it when she switches from Eva to Yukihime.

I didn’t know Akamatsu-sensei was 50! I’m wondering if he will have more people drawing the manga too, making it easier for him to develop/concentrate on the story maybe? I’m curious on what he will have beyond the Negima storyline.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

Akamatsu-sensei is actually 47. But I understand all too well how things don’t work quite the same as they did at 17, 27, or even 37. 😛

  14. dominic says:

We do Not Know the year

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Thanks for the tip! Man, I try to keep tabs on multiple places from Japan displaying spoilers, but they never show up in the same place.

      • TheTotallyInnocentGilga says:

No problem. After all this isn’t a subliminal attempt of mine to stir you to do some reviews about the best show ever…. not at all… nope…. never would I do something like that…. never ever….

hihihi soon your soul will be mine

    • LaGilga says:

      “good grief, what a scatterbrain”
      “you are” 🙂
      “Asuna-san!” 😀

      p.s.:
operation ‘convince Astro of making TNG reviews’ initialized *hihihi*

  15. ryuuya says:

Is there a chance for the manga to become a weekly again after some time?

    • Mattcgw says:

If the anime is successful promotion and Akamatsu-Sensei can put out 3 volumes a year via 40 or so pages per a chapter, (which he may have to, due to the standard of living he’s become used to or overheads like renting a studio, paying tax etc) then it’s highly unlikely.

Akamatsu-Sensei is also 50, and would appreciate the more relaxed schedule.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Anything is possible, but I would classify this as highly unlikely.

  16. NML says:

Wow, what a cover for volume 11, Eva going to kiss Touta.

I was kinda afraid it’d be all the girls in their underwear for the harem arc, so I’m ok with this.

  17. sanchi says:

I wasn’t familiar with the manga publication companies and thought UQ Holder was moving from a weekly to a completely different monthly shonen magazine.

For anyone that may not know (maybe only me), I learned, and my understanding is that Kodansha publishes Weekly Shonen Magazine and also publishes the monthly Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, so its the same publishing company.

So in review, UQ’s break begins/starts with this year’s 30th issue of WSM, and the return/debut will be on Oct 9th, which is its November issue of BSM.

I hope nothing happens between that time and everything goes as planned. I hope Akamatsu will now have the time of 4/5 months to create and do the manga chapters in advance, and no stress of immediate deadlines of publishing dates, and much needed time with his wife.

ANB – anything from Crunchyroll if they will continue 4/5 months from now with UQ Holder or whatever name its changed into?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, Kodansha has quite a number of magazine titles, not only shounen, but seinen, shoujo, and josei too.

They have ignored me so far.

I really don’t know why but I somehow feel that this time it is actually Negi backing up the MotB. I feel like he found that the reason he was presented with was actually something to be resolved. I guess this hunch was way back when Eva and co was pulled into the world where Negi and Nagi and the MotB was shown. Negi says that it is not like what Eva think it is. I don’t know if this is from my lingering affections towards the original series but I do think that the past they’re showing will somehow change Touta’s opinion about the plans of Eva and Fate. I don’t think Touta will follow Negi but I do think that his new plan will somehow be in coordination to what Negi wants to achieve.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

This is why I’ve been thinking for a while now that Negi made a deal with MotB. That would fit his MO.

With Japan expo coming up again in Paris, I could ask Sensei. But it would be a wasted trip if I didn’t get to ask a question.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Well, depends on whether there are other things you want to do in Paris at the time. 🙂

  20. Yue Ayase says:

Read the Korean scanlation. Yue gets her hair cut off but it magically grows back before the end of the chapter. Not sure if this is an error or perhaps a sign of immortality. Ken is usually pretty good about those kinds of things, like when Nodoka lost her ahoge for awhile thanks to Tsukuyomi. Interesting moment in the first picture of the second batch of image spoilers. Eva almost always refers to the girls of 3-A by their full names but here she strictly uses Yue and Nodoka’s first names. My Korean is pretty lacking but I think immediately prior to this moment she uses Yue’s full name before just calling her by her first name. Looks like perhaps she’s struggling with the fact she’s facing a couple of her former friends. Eva of course has no issue cutting down enemies, but these are two girls who she became friends with and perhaps she was under the impression that they were deceased. Death is normal for Eva but right from the very first chapter of this series (as well as future!Eva from the previous series) makes it pretty clear that she likes the girls of 3-A and misses them when they’re gone.

Nodoka’s wings disappear through the chapter although there are several pages inbetween so it’s very likely they just went back to wherever they were before. Hard to tell if they’re the genuine article or just a byproduct of the suit she’s wearing. She, Haruna and Yue appear at the end of the chapter, making for a stark contrast between their present and past selves (something I hope Touta notices). Asuna of course appears and there’s a surprise cameo from Yuuna, Makie and Ako. Of course we won’t find out for months where this goes but I’m glad Touta is just a projection akin to when Negi showed Asuna his past.

Nice to see the Numbers actually do something for a change instead of just sitting on the sidelines. Ikkuu apparently retained his pants or perhaps just put them on, heh. Santa and Kuromaru hold back Rakan, which is extremely nice to see since I really like both of those characters (especially Santa). And of course who can forget Fate daddy, who was probably a chapter late but better late than never as they say. I think Yue mentions that perhaps both Eva and Fate were responsible for Touta which just raises further questions if true. Hard to tell the goings on without proper English translations but this chapter just ups the ante in terms of questions to answer. This is a very difficult cliffhanger to swallow but hopefully Ken will make up for it with a long chapter when the series returns. Or a faithful, well-directed anime. Either will do nicely.

      Or something else. 😛

Anyway, I’m looking forward to reading the chapter.
