Story Summary/Synopsis

Kyo recalls his time with Kazuma, who became his foster father. He’s troubled when he finds Kazuma has already left for home. As such, Kyo races out to try to catch him. Meanwhile, Tohru escorts Kazuma to the base of the hill near Shigure’s house. There, Kazuma opens up on how awful he was as a child to his grandfather, who contained the cat spirit. In that regard, Kazuma took Kyo in to atone for his sins. Tohru finds Kazuma’s actions commendable, stating he’s very much like a father.

About that time, Kyo races up, demanding to know why Kazuma left without saying goodbye. He apologizes to Kazuma for the trouble he’s caused in the past. With that, he vows to become a son Kazuma can be proud of. This makes Kazuma happy, who uses a martial arts move on Kyo to put him down. Kyo proudly speaks to Tohru about his Shishou, and Tohru beams at the positive turn foster father and son have taken.

Back at the house, Yuki gets ready for school. His entrance at the school is noted by Haru. He senses something is wrong and goes to see Tohru. She becomes concerned when she hears Haru’s concerns. Later, Haru meets with Yuki to discuss things. Yuki doesn’t mention what happened with Kyo. But he’s troubled that he’s causing Tohru worry. As such, he finds Tohru in a stairwell. He tells her he’s making progress becoming a better person and promises to do things with her this summer.

That afternoon, Haru comes home with Kyo, Tohru, and Yuuki, having been invited to do so. On the way there, Kagure ambushes Kyo and comes with them. Once at Shigure’s home, they find Ayame waiting for them with crabs. Kisa, Hatori, and Momiji also show up. Meanwhile, Hiro pays Rin a visit in the hospital while Shigure spends time with Akito.

Thoughts/Review

And so TMS ends the first season of this series with Fruits Basket (2019) 25. Taken from chapters 34, 35, a bit from the end of 42, and a bit from the end of 48, season 1 ends rather nicely.

Changes to the Source Material

TMS was mostly fairly faithful to the source material in Fruits Basket (2019) 25. However, they did make some changes due to this being the season finale. Other changes weren’t based on that, though.

  • Haru and Tohru don’t discuss Momiji at the start of their conversation.
  • When Kagura ambushed Kyo in the manga, it was to take him to the Kazuma’s dojo, not to come to Shigure’s home.
  • The end party and monologue wasn’t in the manga.
  • Shigure was eating crabs with Ayame when the group arrived home. He wasn’t hanging out with Akito. I suspect this was done to help set up season 2 events.
  • Having Momiji, Kisa, and Hatori show up wasn’t in the manga as well. In fact, which Shigure not being there, it seems kinda weird for them to show up. And for Kisa to show up without Hiro is weird too.

Speaking of Hiro, his scene with Rin does help set up season 2, even if his absence from Kisa’s side is weird.

Likewise, showing the two “mystery” students at school is to set up season 2.

FUNimation

FUNimation was mostly OK with Fruits Basket (2019) 25. But as per usual, they sometimes got a bit bipolar when it came to honorific usage. I was glad to see the “-nii” and “-nee” honorifics used. But there was a time (or two) where an honorific wasn’t put into the subtitles ’cause “reasons.”

Some Spoiler Thoughts

For those who’ve never read the source manga and thus don’t know what’s to come, I’ll wrap my next thoughts in SPOILER tags.

Future Story Spoilers

I couldn’t help but remember when I first read chapter 35 of the manga, I was shipping Yuki x Tohru big time. After all, Kyo had Kagura and so it was an easy choice as far as I was concerned.

So as I watched this episode, I was reminded of my old feelings when I first read the manga story. So I wanted to denote this because it is a credit to TMS for pulling off the emotional elements of the Yuki x Tohru storyline.

A good closing episode, giving us the denouement to the previous episode’s drama. It all wrapped up rather nicely.
The second half is more about setting up the second season. We see all the zodiacs we’ve met (except Ritsu!), and meet the penultimate zodiac – Rin. For us manga readers the group scene at the house might’ve felt a little weird, but it was scene to close off the season.
Oddly enough we didn’t see Uotani and Hanamura, which I felt was weird. Maybe because they had their big two-parters just before the finale?

TMS pulled thing together pretty nicely, taking scenes from various chapters without it feeling choppy.

When I read the manga I was never really shipping anyone, the overall story interested me more than any potential couples. But I was probably in the minority on that.

Its part of the issue with how the redesign of the original story’s flow went. So to end with drama, they put Kyo’s story at the end. BUT, because Hana-chana and Uo-chan don’t know about the zodiac, it isn’t possible to bring them into that ending.

That aside, I know what you mean.

I think I was always a shipper. The original anime put me on a Yuki x Tohru ship from the start. And then the manga enhanced that. It wasn’t until way later in the manga that I realized the actual ship was the best one and intended from the start.
