SPOILER Summary/Synopsis

Taiga, Rider, and Sakura join Shirou and Saber for breakfast at the Emiya residence. Sakura notes how her senpai’s meals affect others in a positive way, especially Rider and Saber. She takes off for school ahead of Shirou, causing him to worry. However, Rider doesn’t think there’s a problem.

At school, Issei gives Shirou a bag full of large, bamboo sprouts from his brother Reikan. This causes Shirou to wonder what meal to use them with. Meanwhile, Sakura goes to the supermarket with Rider. MITSUZURI Ayako comes up to them and they learn she’s making gratin for her family. Ayako and her brother Minori leave, so Sakura decides they’ll have gratin tonight as well.

At the Emiya residence, Sakura informs Shirou of her gratin decision. Shirou decides to try adding the bamboo shoots in the dish. After making it, everyone loves the addition of the bamboo shoots. As such, Sakura gets permission to take some home, where she prepares the same dish for her step-brother, Shinji. Sakura is ecstatic that Shinji liked her meal and ate it all.

Thoughts/Review

I really enjoyed watching Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 05…and then Shinji showed up. 😂

Rider and Sakura’s Turn

So far, this series has featured certain characters from Fate/stay night. For Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 05, Sakura and her Servant Rider get featured. I really love seeing Rider with Sakura as opposed to Shinji. Further, it is so lovely seeing Rider as a normal person and not some abused Servant who has to slaughter innocents to survive.

I know that Sakura was often at the Emiya residences in Fate/stay night (the amount of time depended on the route taken in the visual novel). Still, I did like seeing her there with Taiga, Saber, and Shirou, making food. I was just bummed she’s still living with the Matou, though I suppose that’s actually how it should be.

Shinji Sucks

The episode was great until Shinji came along. Knowing the story of what Shinji did to Sakura in Fate/stay night, it sickens me to watch her desperate to please him. If Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 05 had shown Shinji in some positive light ahead of time, maybe I wouldn’t feel so negative. As it is, Shinji can get stuffed as far as I’m concerned. But maybe that makes Sakura a better person than me.

Subtitle “Fun”

Time for me to gripe a bit about the subtitles of Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 05. I honestly don’t know what goes through the minds of those in charge of the English adaptation. While I’m glad to see “Senpai” and “Fuji-nee” in the subtitles, why are those the only acceptable ones? Niisan is out. Rei-nii (which was stated) is out. Basically, all other honorifics are out. This isn’t new, but it stood out more this episode. And by standing out, it irritated me. 😅

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Finally, I liked seeing Ayako show up. I do remember her from Fate/stay night. I don’t remember her little brother Minori though.

In the end, Today’s Menu for Emiya Family 05 is a fun episode, though Shinji showing up at the end killed the mood for me.
