SPOILER Summary/Synopsis

Waver accuses Caules of being the murderer and thief. On cue, Reines and another Caules show up. They were flung to the train, thanks to the efforts of Luvia, Kairi, Flat, and Svin. Waver identifies the fake Caules as Doctor Heartless, the previous Department Head of Modern Magecraft Theories. Heartless drops the disguise.

Doctor Heartless challenges Waver to lay out his case. Waver does so, revealing how Heartless worked with Olga’s father in researching the Holy Grail War. He then reveals how Heartless was able to create a fake Holy Grail in order to summon a false Servant. Heartless concedes to summoning the Child of Einnashe and attacking the train. With that, he uses a Command Spell to summon his Servant, whom he has classified as a new class called Faker.

In order to preserve the Mystic Eyes in the train, Heartless, Faker, Waver, and Gray exit through the open roof in the car. Waver challenges Faker since she was not part of Iskandar’s army. She’s enraged and attacks, causing Gray to defend. Heartless summons a Child of Einnashe, which stops the train. Karbo enters the fray, using his restored Mystic Eyes to break Faker’s weapons.

In the train, Olga gets support as she casts a massive spell that bombards the evil forest. Faker uses her Mystic Eyes to freeze Karbo and viciously attack him. She goes to kill the frozen Gray, but Trisha’s lewd pendant is tossed into her vision. The pendent shatters and Faker is massively injured. She uses her Noble Phantasm, causing Gray to do the same.

Thoughts/Review

Wow. On one hand, Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files {Rail Zeppelin} Grace note 12 was a mystery reveal that was interesting, but out of left field. On the other hand, the episode had a good ending.

Who Done It…What?

Although this story arc has been set up as a “who done in” murder-theft mystery, there’s no way the audience would have guessed it. That’s because as I suspected, the thief, murderer, and Master was a new character. I will admit that for a moment, I was stunned when Waver accused Caules. But there was no way for me to know this wasn’t the real Caules.

Still, Waver’s exposition case against Dr. Heartless is decently done. But much like the reveal of Heartless, Yvette’s involvement came out of the blue for me. And as expected, Adashino wasn’t the villain. However, I was surprised she was working with Waver.

Battle

The second half of Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files {Rail Zeppelin} Grace note 12 was dedicated to the fight between the heroes and the villains. It was interesting seeing Waver read through Faker and understand why she wasn’t part of Iskandar’s army. And it did throw her off her game.

Speaking of Faker, I guess this is officially a canon Servant class. I kinda wish she’d show up in Fate/Grand Order.

I was glad to see Karbo get his Mystic Eyes back so he could get a bit of revenge. We’d heard how powerful his eyes were. Now we get to actually witness their power in action.

As for Gray, I’m pretty sure that as she unlocked Add in order to use Lancer Altria’s (Artoria) Noble Phantasm, we could hear Altria/Artoria speaking in unison with the male voice.

The only weird part about the fight is Trisha’s pendent. I honestly don’t know how it affected Faker. I watched things twice, and I still don’t know. 😅

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Let me wrap up my review of Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files {Rail Zeppelin} Grace note 12 with some final thoughts.

  • There’s a big disconnect with the use of Luvia, Kairi, Flat, and Svin in this episode vs. previous episodes. Kairi and Luvia were doing an investigation. Then suddenly, Luvia goes home and Kairi is driving with Flat and Svin. And then all four are together. But I guess Kairi went to get them to bring them to Luvia.
  • The laugh in the episode came from Reines and Caules being literally flung, via magic, to the train.

In the end, I found Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files {Rail Zeppelin} Grace note 12 to be an enjoyable episode. The villain comes out of left field, but somehow, everything works out fine in terms of story.
