Story Summary/Synopsis

Momiji drops by Shigure’s home to invite Tohru, Yuki, and Kyo to the Sohma summer beach house. Further, he wasn’t to leave the next day. However, Tohru hasn’t done her summer homework. As such, Yuki helps her finish it. As they work, Yuki notices the baseball cap Tohru has in her room. He inquires about it, so Tohru says it came from a boy who helped her when she was a little girl.

The next day, Tohru, Kyo, Yuki, and Momiji leave for the beach house. Rin shows up to try to pump Shigure for something. Meanwhile, Hiro, Kisa, and Haru meet them at the beach. After the group has fun in the water, they walk home. Hiro finds Tohru’s memento book and returns it. He wonders why Tohru only blathers about her mom, but not her dad. This catches Tohru off guard, but she tries to laugh it off.

Thoughts/Review

And so we come to Fruits Basket Season 2 06, where TMS decides that the manga’s story flow needs to be flushed ’cause “reasons”. And as a result, I think we are losing the heart of the manga’s story in favor  of “just the facts” and “we need to make our own version and not just adapt what was in the source manga material.”

Changes to the Source Manga

The scrambled adaptation of Fruits Basket Season 2 06 came from the majority of chapter 53, the majority of chapter 54, a page from chapter 48, and the majority of chapter 55.

  • The rain was not shown in the manga, but it was mentioned. So no problems with this addition to the anime.
  • In the manga, Tohru warns Momiji not to disturb Kyo before Momiji invites Kyo.
  • The whole storm breaking the window in Tohru’s bedroom is removed. This also removes the suggestion that Rin was angry with Tohru for some reason.
  • The teenage Rin is MUCH more seductive in her approach to Shigure in the anime than she is in the manga. It is an uncomfortable moment, but I think it actually improves things in a narrative sense for down the road.
  • In the manga, Kisa and Hiro didn’t arrive until the second day at the beach house.
  • All of the setup story stuff regarding beetle hunting is removed.
  • It appears that Hiro’s flashback discussion with Rin will not be in the anime. I suppose there might still be a chance of its inclusion.

And of course, everything is scrambled from the manga’s original story flow, making things a bit janky for me at times.

Thoughts on the Changes

I know I’m Mr. Negative of late when it comes to this second season of Fruits Basket. And for Fruits Basket Season 2 06, I haven’t been much better. I know when it was originally rumored that there would be less episodes made than the existing manga required, I knew there’s be changes and such. But I would rather have seen TMS do more episodes and do things right rather than do what they are doing.

Fruits Basket Season 2 06

That said, I’m going to say that I figure that most viewers who’ve never read the manga aren’t going to have a problem with the anime. They aren’t going to know what they are missing. But I do know what’s missing and it annoys me. Further, it annoys me that the perfectly fine story flow of the manga is flushed for the anime.

Fruits Basket Season 2 06

No doubt, were someone from TMS to read my drivel, they’d try to explain to me why the changes had to be done. In some cases, I don’t mind IF it improves on the original material. However, in this case, TMS is scrambling things just because they can. I’m guessing some of it is because they want to make less noticeable cuts from the source manga. And they wanted to end the episode with the dramatic hat reveal.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Let me wrap up my review of Fruits Basket Season 2 06 with some final thoughts.

  • Bloody official subtitles. I despise the use of “Soma” instead of “Sohma”. But even more agregious is calling Hatori “Harry” instead of “Hari”. Heck, I would be fine with “Ha’ri” like the official English adaptation has the name. After all, that’s what Momiji is doing. He’s not addressing Hatori as “Harry”.
  • And while I’m ranting on the subtitles, why is it that the official subtitles are OK with brother/sister honorifics, but not as stand-alone titles? I’m glad to see Rin address Shigure as “Gure-nii”, which is proper. But why can’t Kisa just call Tohru “Oneechan” (or even “Onee-chan”) in the subtitles rather than “Big Sister”. 🙄

Fruits Basket Season 2 06

In the end, Fruits Basket Season 2 06 conveys the story it is supposed to tell. However, I still feel heart elements from the original manga story are being lost due to the restructuring and cuts in the anime story.
