Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

SHIROGANE Yaiba reflects on her friendship with MIYAKO Haru (Myaako). Myaako’s parents and Yaiba’s parents were friends. However, Myaako’s parents died while she was still young. As such, Yaiba felt pressured to be good friends with Myaako, even though they had different interests. And no matter what Myaako did to Yaiba, people excused it.

As such, Yaiba decides to surpass Myaako in school and such. However, Yaiba’s grades are trash, no matter how much she studies. As a result, the pair ended up in the same middle school. Regardless, Yaiba continued to try and study hard. One day in the library, a masked girl (Kaguya) informs her she’s effectively spinning her wheels.

Kaguya explains that Yaiba is attempting to be the best at everything. Unfortunately, there’s not enough time in one’s life to achieve this, short of being immortal. Yaiba takes Kaguya’s words to heart and asks her to tutor her and lend her wisdom. Kaguya agrees.

Yaiba’s grades improve, but she worries about Kaguya’s feelings. However, she’s relieved when Kaguya calls her a friend. This moment is overheard by Myaako.

Thoughts/Review:

I know a lot of fans don’t care for Nasa’s students, but Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 182 explores two of them plus Kaguya.

Odd Friendships

I feel bad for Yaiba (I decided to start using her given name, rather than her family name of Shirogane). I understand her parents wanting her to befriend Myaako in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 182. But it does suck that no matter what thing Myaako did, Yaiba’s parent’s let it ride due to Myaako’s orphan status. Thus we have our first odd friendship, which we know exists in present time.

The other is Kaguya befriending Yaiba. She sees Yaiba struggling to get ahead and failing. Thus she reaches out and helps Yaiba to study and focus. So what was it about Yaiba’s struggles that caused Kaguya to approach her in the first place?

Kaguya

In a weird sort of way, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 182 was more about Kaguya than Yaiba and Myaako. I’ve long felt that the Kaguya we’ve seen in the present is the Kaguya from the past. Two things in the chapter seems to enhance that theory. The first is Kaguya speaking of Yaiba borrowing [her] wisdom. Wisdom comes from experience. If Kaguya isn’t immortal, where does her wisdom come from? Reincarnation? Maybe.

That aside, the other item that stuck out to me was Kaguya educating Yaiba that her goals to be good at everything were impossible, short of being immortal. We’ve already seen how immortality has allowed Tsukasa to be good at quite a lot of things. And if Kaguya is immortal, it would explain why she’s so good at a great many things.

Still, if Kaguya is immortal, why return to school? It seems clear to me that there’s nothing anyone can teach her. My only response to this is that Kaguya is lonely, and thus seeks out friendships in schools, helping others. And like Tsukasa, no matter how much wisdom she has, her maturity level is still that of a teenager. Thus she’s more able to befriend teens.

We’ll see how all this plays out.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 182 was a side story about Yaiba, Myaako, and Kaguya. I don’t know why Hata-sensei felt the need to explore this, but we’ll see how it pays off in the future.
