Right Stuf Assimilated By Crunchyroll (Sony)

Welp, Sony continues its march to corner the anime market in the U.S. by having Crunchyroll buy Right Stuf (and subsequently Nozomi Entertainment). As announced on Right Stuf’s website on August 4, all of Right Stuf is owned by Crunchyroll, except one thing — hentai and any H-related materials.

As expected, Right Stuf is going on and on about how great this buyout is. Right Stuf customers are not so sure. After all, Sony seems very keen on self-censoring products that have what they deem to be problematic content. And Right Stuf has already been forced to spinoff their H product line to a newly found company named Ero Anime Store.

Initially, outside of the H materials no longer for sale, I don’t think much will change for Right Stuf. However, I do predict that in a year or so, Right Stuf will be absorbed into the Crunchyroll Store. Crunchyroll will become the main place to get anime. But if it is problematic anime, Amazon likely won’t be much help as they purge anime/manga they don’t like.

And for those of you who are worried about the H stuff, I wouldn’t worry. One doesn’t take the time, effort, and money to create a new business if one doesn’t feel it will be successful.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on CR’s latest purchase? Let me know in the comments.

Ugh and a half. I don’t have any reason to think this, just a nasty suspicion because corporations are so frickin’ metric-headed… I’m guessing it’s a given that the reasonable prices will be a goner once there’s no doubt they’re the only game in town, but what would you guess will become of the older and less-mainstream products (e.g. the comparatively-ancient Maison Ikkoku or Seikai no Senki)?

Gah. Sorry I missed this. I had no comment alert for some reason.

You’re probably right about raising the price of anime. Several years ago, a Japanese media writer attacked me (and Americans in general) for not wanting to pay excessive prices for anime.

As to older titles, I’m not sure. I suppose it depends on if Sony/CR get everything. I think someone just license-rescued Urusei Yatsura.
