Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Kaguya lets her adoptive parents and the emperor know that drinking the elixir will make them immortal. Further, they won’t be bothered with the normal issues mortals have. As such, the three of them would become a part of Kaguya. However, Kaguya informs the emperor that it won’t be possible for them to meet again. As such, the emperor vows to not drink the elixir if he can never be with Kaguya. She calls him a traitor and dissolves.

Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 206

The day before Kaguya left, she promised her adoptive mom that she would soon cross paths with a certain child. After Kaguya left, the bamboo cutter died. His wife game birth to a daughter named Hachiyo. Tsukasa’s father was executed for not destroying the elixir, though no one knew what happened to the potion.

A few years later, the emperor was killed in an uprising against him. His things are burned, including some love letters. One from Kaguya stated that she believed they’d be able to meet again some day.

Thoughts/Review:

And so we come to the sad but known ending of Kaguya’s story in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 206.

The End of the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter

There were only 10 pages in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 206, but it didn’t feel shorter. That aside, Kaguya is somewhat different here when she explains the benefits of those closest to her drinking the elixir. The way she described it, immortality was a blessing, not a curse. She didn’t seem to under why the emperor didn’t want to take the elixir, despite the fact that he could never be with Kaguya.

There were some interesting things that happened in this chapter. I have to suspect that these will be future plot elements. First is the elderly bamboo cutter’s wife giving birth to a daughter named Hachiyo. I guess this is the child Kaguya prophesied about.

Second was the coup against the emperor. No explanation is given as to why this happened. Oddly enough, Hata-sensei drew a picture of a shocked, generic (eyeless) crowd reacting to this, sans one kid, who was fully drawn. That kind seemed kinda sinister to me.

Finally, there was the burning of the emperor’s things. I suspect the letter in this chapter was Kaguya’s final letter, expressing her belief that they’ll be able to meet again someday. I hope modern day Kaguya gets that wish fulfilled.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Let me wrap up my review of Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 206 with some final thoughts.

  • Assuming the letter in Nasa’s father’s collection is from the emperor, I wonder who preserved it.
  • Kaguya is seen dissolving at the end. I wonder if Tsukasa drinking the elixir brought Kaguya back. Either that or Kaguya is constantly being reincarnated.

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 206 is an interesting, if sad conclusion to The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.
