Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Three hundred years after Tsukasa became immortal, she walks through a swampland with a man named Masakado. She wants to clear Michizane’s reputation. Masakado assures Tsukasa that the swampland is a good spot for a prosperous city. However, when Tsukasa trips and falls into muck, she angrily states that this swamp cannot become a large city.

In the present, Tsukasa tells Nasa that the Tokyo land they are on used to be swamp. And now it is a concrete jungle. She teases Nasa that he’d probably face-pant in the swamp. Despite initially proclaiming how surefooted she was in the past, she eventually admits that sometimes even she’d stumble. Despite that, she concedes that she never imagined Tokyo would become the city it is.

Back in the past, 600 years after Masakado’s death, Tsukasa speaks with a man named Takechiyo (TOKUGAWA Ieyasu) in the city of Musashi. Tsukasa still doesn’t think the place is suitable for a city, especially since since the nearby river causes much destruction when it floods. However, Takechiyo sees promise in this land and wants to make Masakado’s dream come true.

Back in the present, Tsukasa admits that since Nasa expressed an interest in her past, she has started remembering more. The two head to the gravesite. As they walk, Tsukasa reflects on how things were and how much there is to tell Nasa.

Thoughts/Review:

We are back to normal with Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 216. And there is a subtle element in this chapter that most will probably miss.

Reincarnation?

In chapter 204, Tsukasa is working with an author named Michizane, to write The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. Now, in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 216, Tsukasa is speaking with a man named Masakado. This is probably Taira no Masakado, whom it is said is the reincarnation of Michizane. When Tsukasa speaks of restoring Michizane’s reputation, that doesn’t negate the notion that Masakado is the reincarnated Michizane. But it does hint that Tsukasa may have been instrumental in restoring Michizane’s honor after his death.

I mention this because it does seem that other people Tsukasa has known have been reincarnated. Hata-sensei has not expressly confirmed this yet. However, he keeps dropping subtle hints. And this was one.

I don’t know if Ieyasu is tied to Michizane or Masakado. I did do a bit of investigation. I couldn’t find any ties, so I think Hata-sensei is playing loose with history. Thus we get an explanation as to why Ieyasu chose the unlikely, abandoned Edo Castle to establish his new fief. We’ll see if Hata-sensei adds any more to this historical element to fit his story.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 216 continues to show Tsukasa’s ties with important people from Japan’s history. And I like that she wants to open up to Nasa about this, but doesn’t know where to begin.
