Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 130 Manga Review
フェアリーテイル 100年クエスト
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Athena claims to use alchemy to cause Natsu, Lucy, Sting, and Happy to cry. Lucy claims this is a lie, considering alchemy is mixing components to create something. Natsu boils away the tears from his eyes. Athena is surprised when Natsu tells her they were looking for her. He just wants the location of dragon gods Ignia and Viernes.
Athena informs Natsu that her priority is executing her master’s will by taking the members of Fairy Tail into custody. She refuses to answer why she’s with Gold Owl, nor why she was called the White Witch. Natsu decides this means he needs to beat it out of her.
At Gold Owl, Rogue, Wendy, and Gray face Gennai and Kotetsu. Using a giant (smoking) pipe, Gennai transmutes things into smoke. Kotetsu transmutes things into iron. Gennai explains transmutation via artifacts means they can fight at 100% all the time while wizards lose mana with every attack.
Duke, the master of Gold Owl shows up and reveals that Gennai and Kotetsu are mechanical entities. After introducing himself, he reveals that he had been a disciple of Elefseria and is Athena’s creator.
Thoughts/Review:
I don’t remember Elefseria mentioning Duke, even if not by name. Nevertheless, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 130 makes that connection. And it establishes that Duke created Athena, who looks like she came from Edens Zero.
We still don’t have a clear concept of what alchemy is in the series. Lucy called out Athena for claiming to use alchemy to transmute their tears. The definition Lucy used is the traditional one, and one you see in RPGs. One has to gather components and mix them in the right proportions to create something else. But Athena’s “transmutation” comes off as magic.
During the fight with Gennai and Kotetsu, their alchemy transmutations are more in line with Full Metal Alchemist. Thus Gennai used his custom, tobacco pipe to transmute anything the pipe touched into a unique kind of smoke. Likewise, Kotetsu transmuted stuff he touched into iron. That combined with the mechanical nature of the two means they can fight without getting tired or losing magical energies, unlike the wizards.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 130 created more interest in me for this arc. That’s not a bad thing.
