Da-yum! Bout time these showed up.

  2. fg7dragon says:

So they met up with Yue & CO and try to convince the girls to make a pactio with Negi! Well, that’s two birds with one stone! And they even have a possible location for Anya (and Asuna). Quite a nice development, NICE Akamatsu sensei!

  3. AstroNerdBoy says:

@Anon — what’s amazing is that there’s someone who notes these images moments after they appear. If I didn’t know better, I’d say they were the poster on 2ch, except this person is apparently from France. *lol*

@fg7dragon — Yeah, lots of goodness appears to be in the works this chapter, including the pactio sell. *lol* Well, I’m sure Akamatsu-sensei has been looking for an opportunity in the story to get Makie her long ago designed pactio card. ^_^

  4. Philip says:

hmm… so it’ll take Nodoka to get Yue’s memories back?

Does no one care that the members of Ala Alba that were exploring Old Ostia are back in New Ostia?

Also it looks like I was right about Konoka, remember the ermine approved love_love chart in chapter 173? Konoka got 4, remember Chisame during the Magia Erebea trials? she only got a three in that chart. It appears from that hug in these spoiler images that Konoka is finally acting on her love-love feelings. On a side note according to that same chart Setsuna scored a seven. I anticipate these to entering the list of people in Ala Alba who have romantic feelings for Negi, Apologies to all KonoSetsu fans but I see a KonoNegi ending or a SetsunaNegi ending or possibly a KonokaxNegixSetsuna ending.

Here is a list of all people who are known to have romantic feelings for Negi. Nodoka, Yue, Ku Fei, Eva, Chachamaru, Setsuna, Konoka, Chisame and surprisingly Sayo. If you don’t beleive me about Sayo see chapter 173 love ranking list.

Also we will most likely find out some new information about Fate’s base since Sayo got close enough to spy on them.

To those who were complaining about Negi and Kotaro being the only ones who were getting stronger I have this to say. Kaede, Ku Fei, Setsuna, Haruna, Asakura and Sayo have returned from the Ostia ruins, this means they can use the diorama sphere to train for an extanded period of time. Keep in mind that we have not yet seen what Ku Fei and Kaede are capable of. Also remember that Mana was evenly matched against Tsukuyomi, Kaede is Mana’s equal therefore Kaede=Tsukuyomi. Also about Setsuna she could start training under Jack Rakan, He isn’t called “The invincible mercenary swordsman” for nothing, He could teach her some sword techniques from outside of the shinmeiryuu that of teach her how to use the powers she inherited from being born a half-demon. This also applies to Ku Fei Jack could teach her some unarmed combat techniques.

Takamichi and Mana should be showing up soon as well, That is all.

Sorry if i Double posted this

Does no one care that the members of Ala Alba that were exploring Old Ostia are back in New Ostia? No, I do care and noticed it with a bit of disappointment since we don’t appear will get to see any of their exploits beyond tiny tidbits. But I suppose that would bog down things too much and Yue’s arc needs a resolution.

Sayo is pretty darn cute I have to say and it doesn’t surprise me that she’s in love with Negi. After all, she wanted to see the Mahora Festival with him and he’s partially responsible for her going from unnoticed ghost to vital member of the battle harem. *lol*

I really want to see Emily’s face when she will find her Nagi is only 10 and with huge harem around 😀

  8. Philip says:

Ku Fei is chibified… I guess Negi is going to pactio with her while at the appearance of Negi’s age or younger…

I’ll bet Emily and co will be crushed when they find out Yue knows the son of Nagi personally if she gets her memories back.

    Also, where’s Kazumi?

  9. Sian says:

sayo being a vital member of the nakama? i’d say its a bit overpromoting her … not that i don’t like her, mind … she’s just not what i’d call a vital member anymore than what Yuna and Makie would become soonish :p

Here is what strikes me as odd, and a little amusing at the same time. Negi’s hairstyle has changed over the course of his time in Magic World. In the beginning, his hair was much more alike to Nagi’s hair, with the angle of most of his hair swooping downwards, ever since he’s come to Magic World his hair has slightly been changing over the course of his time there. Granted, Nagi’s hair looked different in Rakans flashback. Still though, Negi seems to have undergone a very visable physical change during his time in MW.

As for the Recon Group sent into Old Ostia, I expect them to give a flashback sooner or later detailing what the team underwent. It’ll likely be a very small flashback or a few pages, but I seriously doubt Akamatsu would leave that out. It’ll probably be done as filler, like the AkoxNegi/Nagi subplot was done during the Negi vs Rakan fight.

Konoka strikes me more as loving Negi as a little brother, seeing as how thats what she called him before. Konoka has embraced Negi like that before, and it seems just like her character. Konoka is more of a silly character and normally used for comedic relief. (Granted, she’s not used only for that reason! Go-go Super Heals!)

I think that list is a little hard to understand as well. You don’t have any idea how it scales, it doesn’t scale 1-10, seeing as how Kaede has a Closeness rating of 12. But, then that doesn’t add up as well. Kaede’s Closeness is higher than both Setsuna and Konoka’s?

What we DO know is that we can determine the Hierarchy of who likes Negi the most based on the list’s total sum scores. The lowest of the group is unkown, seeing as how Chamo points out that the list represents everyone “in the resort”. What we do know, is the numbers range from 20 (The Lowest) to 57 (The Highest). More specifically, we know that there are only Thirteen women in Negi’s group. So that means that the List would look something like:

    Blank
    Blank
    Blank
    Blank
    Blank
    Blank
    Setsuna
    Konoka
    Chisame
    Asuna
    Sayo
    Kazumi
Hane (The Unknown.) [I personally think it’s a mishap, and that it’s Haruna.]

Reguardless, I don’t think that list holds -any- water anymore. There is definantly no way that Asuna ranks below Chisame so badly, or that Setsuna and Konoka rank above Asuna as well. Even Kaede ranks above Asuna. 😛

The list’ll likely be revised by Chamo and Haruna, and I’m interested to see what the new lineup is. ^_^

just that? they met up with yue just like that? x.x

    nnnuuuoooo!!
well, thanks for sharing anyway >.>

on other note.. what happen with the real Asuna?

  12. Ultimaniac says:

Thank you sooo much for these! I really hate these long waits when there’s a break.

Daww, Ako acting shy around Negi ^_^ She’s never really been on my “favorite character list,” even after everything she’s done in the last couple chapters, but something about that page was too cute. I also like how Asuna didn’t smack Negi like she did after the Takamichi fight.

    @ that last anon

I don’t think we’ll see Rakan training anybody else. Rakan trained Negi because he’s the son of an old friend and because he feels that Negi needs to be stronger for what lies ahead. Theres really no point in him taking on more students (unless they pay him *_*) Sure, he also said that the future of the world would be up to Negi AND his team but I still don’t see him taking on a bunch of pupils. Besides, he might be able to teach Ku a thing or two but Eishun would probably be a better teacher for Setsuna.

Also, It’s kinda pointless to start guessing at the girl Negi is going to be with at the end, if at all. If there were just two or three then a guess would be valid but there are WAY too many here that actually have a logical chance of being with him. (even so, I still want it to be either Eva or Yue ^_^)

  13. TomandChez says:

Ah, I should’ve figured Nodoka would be the catalyst for Yue’s returning memories. (Of course, I’m just guessing that she’s gonna remember everything…) And I wonder when they’re going to notice that the Asuna they’re talking to is a fake…

  14. Anonymous says:

For the affection list, that list is wrong.

    Chachamaru
    Setsuna
    Konoka
    Chisame
    Kaede
    Haruna
    Sayo
    Kasumi

If you look carefully at the raw for the Haruna one, it’s the right part of the Ru Kana. Besides, Asuna’s name is in Kanji so it can’t be her.

About my previous post suggesting that Ku Fei and Setsuna train under Jack Rakan, I was merely adressing concerns people have about Negi being the only one getting stronger. The idea that UltraManiac came up with of Eishun is impossible. Eishun is on earth, Setsuna is in the magic world.

To those of you who think that Fillius Zect is dead I say this. Alberio Imma wasn’t seen at the award ceremony either why is that?

To AstroNerdBoy: It appears the next few chapters of Mahou Sensei Negima will make or break your Negi=Nagi theory.

Also about why the Ostia explorers weren’t seen, this is most likely to keep us in the dark about Kaede and Ku Fei’s fighting ability. Think about it we have only seen a tiny bit of what these two are capable of.

Next topic: will Ku Fei, Yuuna, Makie, Akira, Ako and Natsumi all receive pactions at once?

  18. Anonymous says:

I did notice the hair change, though I had been wondering for a while when they’d show him age. Biologically, he’s got to be around 12-13 now, right? The extra days and the many recent extra days definitely should have some effect.

  19. Hugh Roe says:

Hmmm, so with Yue in the city, and 2 badges being located out in the ruins…1 badge too many.

And hopefully this will start the resolution to the (to me at least) irritating side lining of Yue.

Yes she’s one of my favourites.

do you think that they are going skip negi getting looked at or will they say he did already? i’m still going for my long shot of ZazieXNegi (i know 1M to 1 odds) but hey it. if math servs me right the mounth will only have 2. one week end of book 2? then is normal week off. but been wrong before.

  21. AstroNerdBoy says:

To those of you who think that Fillius Zect is dead I say this. Alberio Imma wasn’t seen at the award ceremony either why is that?

That is a good question. I do hear rumor that Zect may in fact be Negi’s next trainer, but I don’t know how valid the rumor is.

It appears the next few chapters of Mahou Sensei Negima will make or break your Negi=Nagi theory.

Quite possibly. Then again, people said that when Arika appeared. *lol*

@Hugh — I noticed that too — I wonder if there’s a mild retcon giving of Anya a badge in the works.

On a completely unrelated note — MY SINUSES! *lol*

  22. Hugh Roe says:

“I wonder if there’s a mild retcon giving of Anya a badge in the works.”
Well, back when Kazumi/Sayo/Chachamaru started their search, Kotaro indicated that the two to worry about finding were Makie and Yuuna as they didn’t have badges, so I took that to indicate that everyone in the official party had one, including Anya.

  23. Ultimaniac says:

So now I’m “Ultramaniac?” XD I think Zect lives too!

And about Negi changing, thats been happening since the very first chapter. To see the biggest difference, look at him in page 11 of ch1, then look at him in page 6 of ch240. Doesn’t look like the same kid at all *_*

  24. arimareiji says:

ANB – your Negi=Nagi theory is really interesting; I’ve been thinking about it since I first read about it a few weeks ago. I’m still partial to Aunt Asuna, but I think your theory offers a lot more directions the story can take.

Re: who Negi winds up with, I’m a Nodoka fanboy – but I think that her diary knows her thoughts better than she does. Remember Yue’s reaction in the who-sleeps-with-Negi fight before they left for Wales? “You first.” (^_~) But that’s just wild speculation at this point.

Re: pactios – yay, about time! They’re long overdue for Ku Fei and Makie. Personally, the others… meh. But part of that might just be that Yuna inexplicably irritates the 5#!t out of me, and I’m only mildly fond of Ako and Akira.

  25. AstroNerdBoy says:

    @Ultimaniac — Oops. Sorry. That’s what I get for fast-typing. ^_^;;;

@arimareiji — I keep having other things come on the docket but maybe I’ll get the complete article out before the manga is over. *lol*

To Ultimaniac: Thanks for correcting me when I spelt your name wrong.

On the topic of Fillius Zect, did anyone else notice that when Jack Rakan was introducing the members of Ala Rubra he deliberately skipped over Fillius Zect and Alberio Imma?

Also did anyone else notice the reaction Fillius had when Alberio Imma mentioned that the meal they were eating had grated radish in it?

Also to those who say that Konoka loves Negi like a little brother I admit that is is quite likely but I still see the two of them ending up together.

  27. Anonymous says:

“Hmmm, so with Yue in the city, and 2 badges being located out in the ruins…1 badge too many.”

Reguarding the person who mentioned there being an unaccounted badge in Fate’s headquarters. Theres a few possibilities, and one of them blows my mind. We know that in the Real World, people are hunting for Fate. This includes Yuuna’s father, who had Photos of Fate in his home when we got that little Yuuna side-chapter.

    Source: http://www.onemanga.com/Mahou_Sensei_Negima!/174/03/

That chapter is important, because it introduces us to Donet McGuinness. What irks me, is that I’m not sure if it’s a fluke or if it’s memory lapse of Akamatsu, but she’s shown wearing a crude-looking White Wing badge during that chapter. Whats even more incriminating is that later on during their trip to London, you find Donet as their guide to MW, and she dissapears during the fight with Fate. And during this whole ordeal, that hair pin of her looks more and more like the badges that Negi’s battle harem sport.

So, either Anya has a badge or I’m right in wondering if Donet has one as well. -.o

  28. arimareiji says:

@Anon – interesting detail, and good catch. There is indeed a resemblance.

But remember where the badges came from. Eva probably couldn’t even have a civil conversation with one of the “establishment” mages without a fight breaking out, let alone giving one a badge…

  29. Sian says:

chances are that Anya have the badge … while she was late for the party in Japan she managed to have time there to socialise with Eva (and being in her castle) enough that its likely that she’s affiliated enough with Ala Alba that she’s for all accounts is counted as a if nothing else a “hired hand” bumbling at the outskirts of the ‘core’ group … with that status theres no reason that she shouldn’t have a Badge (else she’s the only one with indeepth knowledge of Ala Alba which doesn’t have a badge)

Regarding the Negi Love Love Rankings (Yes, that is what it is called.), Chamo’s list updates as the girls’ love for Negi increases. Remember, the more love they feel, the more suitable they are as partners. The last official list update was in an issue of Negi Pa(rty).

Chamo’s list is very detailed as to the value of each type of love felt, as well as the total. The numbers are list as follows: Friend (tomo), Familiarity (oya), Love/Desire (koi), Pure Love (ai), Lust (iro/”ero”), Total. It’s easier to understand the chart if you understand the differences between the love values. The chart measures on a scale of 1 – 20 for each type of feeling. Thus, very low is 1 – 4, low is 5 – 8, medium 9 – 12, high is 13 – 16, very high is 17 – 20.

    Nodoka: 6 – 3 – 15 – 18 – 15 – 57
    Yue: 10 – 5 – 18 – 9 – 14 – 56
    Asuna: 13 – 15 – 8 – 12 – 8 – 56
    Ayaka: 8 – 9 – 12 – 18 – 5 – 52
    Makie: 10 – 3 – 16 – 12 – 10 – 51
    Fei: 15 – 9 – 10 – 5 – 9 – 48
    Chachamaru: 5 – 9 – 13 – 8 – 10 – 45
    Setsuna: 8 – 10 – 7 – 10 – 7 – 42
    Konoka: 9 – 11 – 4 – 10 – 6 – 40
    Yuna: 9 – 5 – 9 – 8 – 8 – 39
    Chisame: 10 – 2 – 8 – 7 – 8 – 35
    Misa: 5 – 2 – 9 – 7 – 10 – 33
    Eva: 2 – 12 – 3 – 1 – 14 – 32
    Ako: 8 – 3 – 8 – 8 – 5 – 32
    Akira: 8 – 11 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 31
    Kaede: 7 – 12 – 1 – 7 – 3 – 30
    Haruna: 7 – 7 – 1 – 5 – 9 – 29
    Chizuru: 4 – 10 – 2 – 3 – 10 – 29
    Sakurako: 7 – 2 – 7 – 5 – 7 – 28
    Sayo: 5 – 5 – 8 – 4 – 6 – 28
    Chao: 9 – 9 – 4 – 2 – 3 – 27
    Madoka: 7 – 4 – 6 – 4 – 5 – 26
    Satsuki: 7 – 9 – 5 – 4 – 1 – 26
    Misora: 5 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 5 – 25
    Natsumi: 8 – 3 – 4 – 3 – 4 – 22
    Kazumi: 6 – 7 – 1 – 5 – 2 – 21
    Narutaki twins: 10 – 0 – 7 – 4 – 0 – 21
    Mana: 8 – 9 – 2 – 1 – 1 – 21
    Satomi: 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 20
    Zazie: ? – ? – ? – ? – ? – ?

So, yeah… Konoka and Setsuna both scored a 10 in ai and a 6 and 7 respectively in ERO, placing them well in the top 10% of the class 3-A average. This is higher than the first Negi Love Love Ranking. As you can see, it didn’t remain purely sisterly affection. There might be another update when they get back (though perhaps not if KA thinks it gives too much away).

  31. Anonymous says:

    Further explanations:
“tomo” is what is sounds like–friend, as in the love of a friend.

“oya” is usually used in the context of familial relationships (hence “familiarity”), but “familial” might be a better grammatical choice.

“koi” and “ai” are the opposing aspects of romantic love–selfish love and selfless love, take and give.

“iro”/”ero”… do I need to explain this kind of love?

So, the total is the net sum of the love, non-romantic and romantic.

  32. ZeroUrashima says:

    You’re wrong about Ai/Koi.

Ai is a very wide Love term. Family Love, Sibling Love, Lovers Love, etc.

Koi is restricted to love between opposite sexes as in lovers.

    On a sidenote.
That kanji is pronounced Oya for Parent and things in this line of thoughts. In this case, it should be pronounced Shin and it’s closeness/intimacy/etc.

Konoka is 10 for Ai which shows as she likes Negi as a little brother but 4 for Koi so she isn’t really seeing Negi as a love interest yet. And just to note, that list is the same as the one they showed in Volume 19 with all students if you bother checking the numbers.

Another thing to note is most probably the -HANE on that list before is probably one of Chachamaru’s sisters since they are the only other people in that resort other than the main party.

  37. arimareiji says:

I’m not sure you can take the list as being a predictor of future plotline. 1) Look at how much variance there was between the first and second lists, and 2) I refuse to believe Akamatsu-sensei put a lot of deep thought into any list that puts Eva at 14 for Ero… Elsewise, you’d have to accept the idea of a Nodoka-Yue-Eva-Negi foursome, since those three are far ahead of anyone else. (>.<) I think to a large degree, some girls’ individual scores got inflated to get their combined score higher – and I think a lot of the combined-score rank is based on popularity rank of characters with fans, rather than plotline.

  38. Anonymous says:

Asuna if probably fine, phisicaly that is. Mentaly, well she can now remember how a lot of people sacrificed themselves to save her, PLUS the Ostia Catastrophe.
I think Fate actualy want’s to redo the ritual that almost destoyed the world.
    Terorists, what can I say!?

  39. ZeroUrashima says:

“Koi is restricted to love between opposite sexes as in lovers.”

I should have just said romantic love… It’s not really restricted to opposite sexe. I wonder why it didn’t cross my mind, anyway…

  40. Anonymous says:

“Ai” is used as part of different expressions of love, but by itself it refers to “pure love”. When any character says “aishiteru”, there’s no confusion as to what kind of love that he or she is referring to. So, while you can use other characters to modify “ai”, that doesn’t change what “ai” by itself is. It’s the same with “oya” and even “koi”. Combined with other kanji, we can really change the message… but it doesn’t change what “koi” or “oya” are by themselves. A good example is “renai”, a combination of “koi” and “ai”. It’s romantic love, give and take.

  41. Anonymous says:

    arimareiji said…

”I’m not sure you can take the list as being a predictor of future plotline.”

Of course not, but it does tell you where things stood at the time that the list was created and based upon that you can make some inferences using the direction that things are going, assuming there is any development (e.g. Ako).

“1) Look at how much variance there was between the first and second lists,”

Again, the list is where things stood at that time.

“and 2) I refuse to believe Akamatsu-sensei put a lot of deep thought into any list that puts Eva at 14 for Ero…”

…Because ch137 oozed “tomo”, “oya”, “ai”, or “koi”? Oh, wait, it’s almost pure “iro”.

“Elsewise, you’d have to accept the idea of a Nodoka-Yue-Eva-Negi foursome, since those three are far ahead of anyone else. (>.<)" It’s not like they’re that far in front of Ayaka and Makie. “I think to a large degree, some girls’ individual scores got inflated to get their combined score higher – and I think a lot of the combined-score rank is based on popularity rank of characters with fans, rather than plotline.” What fans think the reason or situation is one thing. What Ken Akamatsu thinks and does can be something quite different. In the end, what he decides is what matters, story-wise.

  42. Arnel says:

Haruna is telling the girls that haven’t made a pactio with Negi to put a lot of felling into the kiss.

  43. ZeroUrashima says:

Before arguing with me, look up their definitions.

    Koi:
    http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=%E6%81%8B&stype=0&dtype=0

    Translation:
    1) To be strongly attracted the opposite sexe.

    Ai:
    http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=%E6%84%9B&dtype=0&dname=0na&stype=0&pagenum=1&index=00034200009100

    Translation
    1) The affection between siblings or parents.

    2) The feeling of endearment towards the opposite sexe. The feeling of attraction between opposite sexe. “koi” [Note: the second definition says it’s the same as Koi]

    3) To treasure something.

    4) To have surpass a personal feeling, the feeling of strongly hoping for the happiness [of others]

I’ll ignore 5) and 6) since they are kinda about something else. Saying Aishiteru is not limited to romantic love, you could say that to family. Example, take last episode of Geass R2 where Nanaly says Aishitemasu to Lulu in the end.

You are not wrong when you say ai is pure love but in the sense that it’s not limited to romantic love. Ai is ANY love.

Saying that adding a prefix can change the meaning is true but there’s something you need to notice. ONLY Ai can mean different type of love if you attach a prefix to it, not koi.

    Ren Ai = Romantic Love
    Kyoudai Ai = Brotherly Love
Doubutsu Ai = Love for animal
    etc.

Ai is any type of love.
    Koi is romantic love.
Unless you are willing to say that the dictionary is wrong, don’t bother continuing.

On a sidenote, I just figured why I said between opposite sexe at first, it was because the definitions said so and was too tired to think lol

  44. ZeroUrashima says:

Ah great, I skipped 5) and 6) since they were about religious love and dropped and missed that.

On the Ai page, there’s use of Ai.

    Uses:
    Ai, Aijou
    “Oya to ko no Ai”
    “Love between parent and child”
Note: it’s Ai alone and is used for love between family.

“Oto no tsuma ni tai suru Ai”
    “Love towards husband’s wife”
Note: Oto no Tsuma sounds odd to me but whatever. Romantic love in this case.

    “Kuni he no Ai”
    “Love towards a country”
Note: ai alone but towarded country.

    etc. etc.

Ai alone is not for romantic love only. I have absolutely no clue where you got the weird idea of give/take love. I definately never saw any such use in the 2+ years I’ve been reading Japanese.

  45. Anonymous says:

Your problem is that you think that I’m arguing definitions when I am not. What is the difference between “koi” and “ai” as it would apply between any of the girls and Negi? “Koi” is desire/wanting. “Ai” is affection/giving. If Akamatsu intended that “ai” mean any kind of love or the other specific loves, then he would not have included it as a separate type of love. Remember, these are all relational between any particular character and Negi. Ayaka is a good example this.

  46. Anonymous says:

To put this another way, the Negi Love Love Ranking included different kinds of love: a friend’s love, familial love, and three other kinds.

With “koi”, we know it’s a kind of love related to desire, passion, etc. With “iro”, we are dealing with a sexual sort of love. So, what do we know about the categories? First, they appear to be specific. Second, they apply specifically to the girl’s feelings towards Negi (hence Negi Love Love Ranking), so the context is established. Third, each value appears to be independent of the others, given the samples presented before us. Fourth, they are all cumulative in total love. Based upon the fourth point, we can reasonably conclude that the total represents all of the different types of love.

Therefore, it is reasonable to presume that we are not talking about a general feeling of love (eliminating 1); not talking about a feeling that is the same as “koi (eliminating 2); not talking about an object to be treasured (eliminating 3); not talking about godly love (eliminating 5); not talking about non-personified existential love (eliminating 6). This leaves 3 as a valid definition: selfless love.

Of course, deduction is not even required if the meta-meaning is understood. It’s like knowing what is meant in a particular phrase, despite the variety of possible meanings.

  47. Anonymous says:

I meant 4 as the meaning: selfless love.

Ayaka, for example, clearly loves Negi. She desires Negi (koi). She is protective of Negi (oya). She acts as a good friend (tomo). She has had erotic feelings toward Negi (iro), but doesn’t typically initiate those thoughts on her own. The strongest type of love is the selfless sort of love (ai) that she feels and expresses. She’s willing do anything if it’s for Negi.

  48. ZeroUrashima says:

Ah, I see why I don’t agree with you at all.

You treat Shin (or Oya as you call it) as Familial Love, I treat it as Intimacy as how close they are. So I shoved Familial Love and Admiration to Negi as a teacher to Ai Department.

Oya/Shin alone can only mean Parent or Intimacy so I believe that interpretation is wrong since if Negi is loved as Family, it’s only as little brother for which Oya wouldn’t make any sense.

Also, another reason why I disagree with that is Ayaka. More than half of Ayaka’s love for Negi is because he’s some sort of substitute for his brother so if Shin/Oya is Familial component, it should be off the chart compared to everyone else. Especially if this list is the same as the one as Volume 19 which is Post-Festival and during the Festival, when Negi called her Onee-chan in his sleep-talk, she was completely estatic which is why I believe that Shin/Oya being Familial Love is impossible and should be shoved into Ai.

And also, Konoka never really showed any romantic affection for Negi up to Volume 19. In fact, even in this Chapter, Negi was hugged only because she missed the small Negi even though the adult one is cool. Most probably she can’t associate the big one with the Negi as her little brother.

This doesn’t pass the smell test. Why would Akamatsu use specific categories except in the case of “ai”?

“Oya/Shin alone can only mean Parent or Intimacy so I believe that interpretation is wrong since if Negi is loved as Family, it’s only as little brother for which Oya wouldn’t make any sense.”
Say what? “Oya” by itself can mean “parent(s)”, “relative(s)”, or “intimate”. It is exactly right for expressing family-like relationships.

“Also, another reason why I disagree with that is Ayaka. More than half of Ayaka’s love for Negi is because he’s some sort of substitute for his brother so if Shin/Oya is Familial component, it should be off the chart compared to everyone else. Your reasoning still makes no sense. You’re treating “ai” as a catch-all when it’s clear that Akamatsu was using the categories for specific types of love. Also, where in the world do you get “more than half of Ayaka’s love is because […]”? That sure as heck isn’t a statement from any official material. Ayaka’s feelings towards Negi are not simply a matter of “big sister” feelings. Moreover, it means that Asuka and Konoka have less of a familial relationship that Ayaka! It means Makie has about the same family-like relationship as Asuna and more than Konoka! Again, as I stated before, what you believe is irrelevant if what Akamatsu decided otherwise.

“And also, Konoka never really showed any romantic affection for Negi up to Volume 19. In fact, even in this Chapter, Negi was hugged only because she missed the small Negi even though the adult one is cool. Most probably she can’t associate the big one with the Negi as her little brother.”
Because what she said in ch77 is exactly the sort of thing you’d say about a younger brother?!

So, no. I think you’re warping things to fit your expectation rather than just translating it.

  50. ZeroUrashima says:

    Ugh…
That list is NOT a relationship chart but one about the feelings the girl feel towards Negi. Kamo said it in Volume 19, “Negi he no Koui do”, “Feelings towards Negi”. The feeling only doesn’t take into account the relationship.

There’s nothing wrong with Ayaka loving Negi more than Asuna as a Brother. Intimacy (Shin) shows that Asuna and Negi has a better relationship. I didn’t say Ai was only the Family Love thing though, I only shoved it to Ai. It’s pretty much any non-romantic, non-frienship, non-sexual affection towards Negi in my book.

    For Konoka:
She did say that she might be all over him if she was standing next to such a cool Negi in Chapter 77. Might. The fact is that she prefer the small Negi over the cool one. Said that in this Chapter and she definately isn’t all over the small one. Besides, she hugs Setsuna and Asuna this way too.

    For Ayaka:
I’m only saying a big portion of it is, not the whole of it.

Forgot the Volume and Chapter but one of the early ones, sees Negi as some sort of replacement for her brother at first.
Volume 11, Chapter 90, being estatic over being called Onee-chan. “BroCon” more or less confirmed despite having some romantic feelings towards him.
Volume 13, Chapter 114, she’s more concern over the fact that Negi was getting injured than his “cool” face that every single other girl found handsome and had a huge reaction over. She’s being more protective than she is interested to his manly side. “BroCon” kinda stronger than her “romantic feeling”

Oh, btw, you said Ai should be Selfless Love. I could agree with that to some degree but I don’t get why you limit it to romantic. I also don’t see why Koi has to be Desire. Heck, Yue has higher Koi rating than Nodoka and is willing let Nodoka go first when Negi was kicked to their bed. You don’t see Nodoka doing the same. Yue is willing to give up while Nodoka is only willing to “share” (her artifact when she looked at her own heart).

    @Anon:

“What fans think the reason or situation is one thing. What Ken Akamatsu thinks and does can be something quite different. In the end, what he decides is what matters, story-wise.”

Thank you for amplifying the point – that sweeping predictions and psychoanalysis of Akamatsu-sensei are of practically no value. Fans may dearly wish to think they know where storyline is headed, even to the extent of seizing on a promo page as if it were some sort of bible for the future, but the only one who knows where he’s taking the storyline is the author himself.

“Oh, wait, it’s almost pure “iro”.”

It’s indisputable that Eva loves f—ing with Negi’s head, and she’s very good at it. But that doesn’t mean she wants to f— him.

“I think you’re warping things to fit your expectation rather than just translating it.”

That was an interesting thing to say. You might want to come back and re-examine it later.

  52. ZeroUrashima says:

“So, no. I think you’re warping things to fit your expectation rather than just translating it.”

I just remembered I forgot to comment on this but seems like arimareiji did it first >_>

Basically, as long as there is no official explanation on it. Any way to translate such wide terms end up being your own interpretation of it.

Saying Koi is Romantic Love Desire Part is kind of twising it. The Desire Part is basically your own interpretation. Ai being giving part of Romantic Love is also twisting it. You’re taking 2 definitions, romantic one and selfless love and combine to meet your expectations. Shin, you’re using one rare case of it, not saying it’s definately wrong though.

Heck, there is nothing that suggests that the author decided that all the types have to a specific affection. In any table, even with mostly specific categories, there is usually at least one column for Others, the rest, or whatever. I just thought Ai is the most fitting for such a role, especially when the most common use of such a word is love in general.

  53. ZeroUrashima says:

Ah great, if only I could Edit rather than Double Post.

I just got the stuff on Negipa to stop this thing, there was an official explanation on those terms on the lower right corner.

Tomo = Negi ni Yuujou wo Kanjiteiru ka
So Tomo = Frendship for sure.

Oya = Negi ni Oyagokoro wo Kanjiteiru ka
Basically, feels parental love towards Negi, we’re both wrong but you’re closer. If it doesn’t include the “brotherly” affection thing, I can easily agree to it.

Koi = Negi ni koi wo shiteiru ka
How much Romantic Love do they feel towards Negi.

Ai = Negi wo Aishiteiru ka
How much do they love Negi.

    Aisuru:
    http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=%E6%84%9B%E3%81%99%E3%82%8B&stype=0&dtype=0

This one is really dense. Aishiteru is not limited to romantic love.

Iro = Negi ni tai suru chotto Ecchi na kankae aru ka
    Basically Sexually Interest in him.

On a sidenote, a lot of Ayaka’s love for Negi being as “Oneechan” is confirmed officially. Check Negipa vol 15 in relationships with arrows. It says Ayaka sees her brother in him. For some odd reasons, there is no words for the relationship between Setsuna/Negi and Konoka/Negi. <_<

  54. arimareiji says:

“It says Ayaka sees her brother in him.”

I always took that as a given, though my perception was probably colored by the original anime. But that’s not necessarily a barrier to her wanting other aspects in the relationship. Xb

On a semi-related note, this link was amusing.

  55. Anonymous says:

Ayaka’s “oya” love is high enough to take her big sister affection. It still doesn’t mean that “ai” takes that place. Moreover, it doesn’t answer the question of the other girls’ rankings in “ai”.

  56. arimareiji says:

For reference, I personally find the onii-chan / onee-chan -> koibito fashion trend to be a little creepy. Far beyond creepy when it’s literal, as in the link I posted to Oniichan Control.

But I wanted to note that, as Anon says, siblinghood is no obstacle to “other” kinds of love in anime/manga. It even seems to encourage it. Xb

  57. ZeroUrashima says:

If you say any of the 9+ girls will go estatic with being called onee-chan, sure, whatever. Ayaka is supposed to be this kind of sister that dotes on her “brother” so much that she feels romantic love for him. Her score is supposed to be off the track. You must be trying really hard to not see this.

Negipa says Oya is offially Oyagokoro anyway.
    http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&p=%E8%A6%AA%E5%BF%83&dtype=0&dname=0na&stype=0&pagenum=1&index=03260902607100

It’s about this feeling as a parent or a guardian. It has nothing to do with the feeling of a sister doting on Negi. Whetever you and I like it or not, it’s what Negipa says. There is no point in going any further.

For Makie and the others, like I said, this is a feeling chart. They don’t need a better relationship to have a stronger feeling. Besides, I never limited Ai to Familial Love only, she could love him partly as a sister, partly admire him as a teacher, etc. Heck it might even take into account the romantic love with a weaker weight to it than koi. (I hope you know what’s a weighted average).

Btw, the koi and ai thing.
I took what Akatmatsu says in Negipa:
“How much romantic love do they feel towards Negi” (koi) as a feeling thing only.

“How much do they love Negi” (ai) as how much do they show affection to him (first definition, “pouring love into someone” so it requires action). Of course, I don’t think it should be limited to romantic love. One of the reasons being Ayaka. There are others but too lazy to point them.

  58. ZeroUrashima says:

    @arimareiji
Don’t think her sisterly love would a barrier as long as they are not blood relatives neither. I’m just saying she is being more protective to Negi in most cases than she cares about her manly side. Even Negipa sums up their relationship as “Seeing her brother in him” so her sisterly love is larger than her romantic love. So whatever parameter that presents her sisterly love, if the table is supposed to make sense, should be higher than koi logically.

On a sidenote, Onii-chan Control was interesting… It gave me a good laugh. <_<
