Urusei Yatsura ep. 119
Urusei Yatsura – 119
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Ataru notices Sakura-sensei attempting to sneak in and feigns illness to head to the school infirmary. Onsen-sensei isn’t buying it and Lum is suspicious when Ataru doesn’t want her there. So Shuutaro says he’ll escort Ataru, which Ataru doesn’t want either. Onsen-sensei sends the three down to the nurse’s station, where Ataru warns them to not be shocked by what they see. Cracking open the door, a strange fog rolls out and inside, Sakura-sensei sits at her desk, surrounded by youkai. Seeing this, Shuutaro flees back to the classroom but is taken back to the infirmary by Lum’s Stormtroopers.
Sakura-sensei reveals that Cherry was working on a purification ritual using her purification wand which is why the youkai are all around her. Seeing that the youkai are very much into Sakura and even seem to get her sexually aroused a bit, Ataru launches a plan. Outside, he tells Lum that the world is in great danger and that she needs to protect Sakura-sensei. Hearing the screams of Shuutaro and the others as they discover the room full of youkai, Lum agrees to go back and help Sakura-sensei.
Ataru seeks out Cherry but instead finds Ten-chan chasing the cat Torajima over candy. The chase ends up going through the vacant lot that Cherry is using as a make-shift shrine, destroying it. Torajima straps a large sake flask to Ten-chan to stop him while Ataru makes off with Sakura’s purification wand. Seeing Lum overhead looking for him, Ataru hides briefly but is happy that Lum is gone as this means his plans for Sakura-sensei can continue. Returning to the infirmary, Ataru attempts to keep the youkai away but not being a miko or priest, he fails. Instead, he tells Sakura-sensei that in exchange for dating him, he’ll give her the wand. She refuses and a fight breaks out until Cherry stops it.
Lum finds Ten-chan and frees him from the very same container. They hear a voice pleading to be freed from inside but they can not open the container. So instead, Lum flies up high and drops it, where it crashes through the roof of the school into Ryuunosuke’s father’s apartment, where he and Onsen-sensei are enjoying some sake. Inside is another youkai, who apparently has a thing for booze. Meanwhile, Cherry has arrived in the infirmary and told the story of this booze-loving youkai. Lum and Ten-chan decide to play dumb.
Searching the school, Sakura-sensei locates where this youkai is at and ends up expelling it, the other youkai that had been attempting to get close with Sakura-sensei, Ataru, Onsen-sensei, and even Ryuunosuke’s father. Lum is not happy about this, but Sakura-sensei tells her not to worry. Indeed, at Ataru’s house, a Shinto ward is on the door and inside, all of the expelled youkai are currently residing along with Onsen-sensei and Ryuunosuke’s father.
Thoughts/Review:
I don’t know if this is an adapted story from the manga or not. In some ways, it feels like it could be seeing as how Takahashi-sensei has a love for youkai (as demonstrated in Inuyasha). That said, it doesn’t change that this was weird no matter how I looked at it. Not only did Sakura-sensei flash her panties in one scene, she also appeared to be sexually turned on every time the snake youkai coiled around her and that was freaky. Were this a modern series, I would expect to find massive numbers of Japanese doujinshi fan art depicting Sakura-sensei being sexed by youkai. *_*
I said this was weird on all fronts and that is true. The story itself is strange and it is hard to put my finger on the exact cause. There’s no purpose or point to anything as we just have a bunch of events strung together to form an episode. There is story flow, but it doesn’t feel right. As to the ending, it was strange as well and not funny.
The only amusing moment came from the guy attempting to take a leak and getting watched by a couple of youkai. Beyond that, I didn’t really find anything funny or even amusing.
I do have a beef with AnimEigo’s translations. For some reason, they chose to translate “youkai” as “ghost.” What the…? That makes no sense because clearly none of these creatures were ghosts. One could have translated the term youkai as “monster” (magical monster is more accurate) or “demon” but I don’t see how you get “ghost” out of this. Very disappointing there.
So, a disappointing episode on all fronts and especially a let down after the recent string of good episodes. Here’s hoping the next one is better. ^_^
For all that I love Maison Ikkoku, Ranma, and Urusei Yatsura, Takahashi-sensei sometimes reminds me of an old poem:
There was a little manga-ka,
Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good,
She was very good indeed,
But when she was bad… she was horrid.
(^_^)
(With apologies to Longfellow, who apparently foresaw the ahoge a century and a half ago.)
Anothe anime by Ranma and Inuyashaa creator.. Maybe I’ll follow the anime..
Good synopsis..
This should pretty much answer your question on if it’s manga related or not:

This episode is actually where I got back into UY (well actually I believe this was where I started collecting UY on DVD). That being said you might of well called this episode “Sakura’s Sexual Harassment” cause in the end that all it was.
But it had some GREAT animation from Yuji Moriyama!
