Viz Wakes Up to Nausicaä Manga Shortages
Back in May, I noted that I had finally scored all seven volumes of the 2nd edition release from Viz of the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind manga. I had started trying to score the manga in early March and it took two months to get all seven volumes. That’s because volumes 2, 3, and 7 were out of print everywhere and I had to go overseas to get these volumes. Even then, some of those sources had dried up and existing copies of these volumes were going up in price, a couple of places even listing some of these for $1000. I complained to Viz, feeling that Viz had totally missed the boat with Disney’s re-release of the Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind anime on Blu-ray. In my mind, Viz should have had all of these volumes in stock to capitalize on Disney’s release unless Viz had lost the license, which I acknowledged in certain places was a possibility.
I received notification today from a fellow fan that Viz has printed fresh copies of volumes 2, 3, and 7 and that Amazon and other online retailers now have copies of the manga. Well, its a little late for me, but better late than never. ^_^ I’d like to thank the folks at Viz for cranking the presses and putting out more volumes. I’ve gotten through volume 3 (soon to be blogged — these volumes are quite dense in terms of what happens, unlike normal manga titles) and it has been an amazing ride thus far.
So, if some of you were interested in picking up the Nausicaä manga series, now’s a good time to do so from Amazon. Someone needs to wake up the folks at RightStuf as for some odd reason, they still aren’t carrying those formerly out of print volumes. ^_^;
Wow. I didn’t know the re-release already had out of print limited volumes. More incentive to hurry up and get the rest of the volumes.
Well, they were out of print and as I said, it took me two months to get the entire series. That said, Viz finally put out some more copies, meaning they still have the license and now folks can get the entire series without having to pay an arm and a leg. ^_^ Let me know when you get them all. ^_^
This is great news for me, as I just started collecting Nausicaa.
I’d say viz has other licenses in much more dire need of a reprint than Nausicaa though. Some of the gravest ones being
-Monster (volumes 3 and 6 are now extremely rare, and 7,8 are heading the same path)
-Maison Ikkoku (volumes missing all over the place)
-Saikano (volume 7 is almost a myth now, and the other later volumes are really hard to find)
Among others. I really hope these volumes see the light of day again, though I guess it’s unlikely. My collection feels hurt. :< Anyways, this is still some good news. Hopefully expand the trend.

Well, through three volumes, I’ve been impressed with the story.
-Maison Ikkoku (volumes missing all over the place)
That series needs to be retranslated from scratch. I would buy it again in a flash IF they did that and IF the adaptation were “ANB-approved.” ^_^
