Akamatsu-sensei’s "UQ Holder" Gets Jabbed in Kumeta-sensei’s "Sekkachi Hakushaku to Jikan Dorobou"

KUMETA Kouji-sensei, probably best known as the manga-ka of the popular series Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei, has recently started a new manga series, titled Sekkachi Hakushaku to Jikan Dorobou. In his second chapter, he goes after AKAMATSU Ken-sensei’s new manga, UQ Holder. Apparently, Kumeta-sensei isn’t a fan of Akamatsu-sensei and has jabbed him a few times in Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei.

For those who don’t know, UQ Holder is the sequel to Negima! UQ Holder is about a group of immortals, of whom Eva, the shinso vampire in Negima!, is a member. Eva has been the guardian to a boy named Touta, who has recently become an immortal vampire.  Touta is an oblivious character who has certain thoughts on how things should be and that’s that. One of his dreams is to one day get to the top of the space elevator (tower), which could be seen in the distance from his rural village.

It is this premise that Kumeta-sensei pokes fun of in chapter 2 of Sekkachi Hakushaku to Jikan Dorobou (no translation needed to get the visual gag).

But, Kumeta-sensei doesn’t stop there. According to Hata (Negima!/UQ Holder fan extraordinaire), Kumeta-sensei goes after the fact that the first chapter of UQ Holder was 82 pages; he jabs the whole immortality concept that is the basis of UQ Holder, and he apparently cracks about the female lead (I’m guessing Yukihime, but those who can read Japanese can correct me). I’m not sure which chapter(s) these shots come from, but here are the pages.

****WARNING! LAST TWO IMAGES ARE NSFW!!!****

Anyway, I found this rather amusing. I’m not sure how serious this thing is between Kumeta-sensei and Akamatsu-sensei. If anyone has more info, do share in the comments. ^_^

Update: This information comes from Hata regarding the conflict.

Ken and Kumita never knew each other well, in fact, according to Ken, he NEVER talked to Kumita once, even if sometimes chances present itself during the year end Kodansha party, the only connection they shared is the friendship with Hayate’s Hata sensei, (Hata being the assistant to Kumita once.) they both refer to each other on BBS/twitter as “that guy/jerk”, (yaru) and the interests are all one sided from Kumita, pretty much acts like a stalker in his reference to things related to Ken,

basically Kumita since the days of Love Hina never fail to troll Ken whenever he could, the most likely reason general public can come out with is he is jealous at Ken being a life winner, (otaku being a successful, rich mangaka marry to a young, pretty, cosplay wife.) Kumita himself never give a reason for his actions.

contray to public belief, Ken said he is not mad at Kumita, and Kumita also had extend free promotion such as for Ken’s wife failed cosplay photo salon.

you can read all about it by google both names together, this is well known to most people follow either mangaka.

  1. ( LOL ) This is interesting , It would seem that Akamatsu-sensei has a Rival.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      And apparently for a while too. I never knew about it.

    • I`ve never heard of it aswell , I`ve been following Ken Akamatsu since 2006 watching the Love-Hina Anime and Finishing it Over-night without sleep , I never knew that someone had a ” Grudge ” Or jealous of him.

    • But it would seem that this sort or kind of things happen in the Manga Industry , I mean after Reading Bakuman , Lol , But it is still surprising though.

      I do know that sometimes manga-ka will kid each other or will parody each other. Heck, Hata-sensei has made some Negima! parody stuff in Hayate the Combat Butler, but it is done as a nod to what Hata-sensei thinks is a good title. Kumeta-sensei does come off as more petulant to me.

    • Ah yes , Very true , I also do think that way.

      But anyways , Going off-topic , I`ve been hearing the name Hayate the Combat Butler quite often , I Did last-year but i wasn`t quite interested , So i`l take a look on the manga if it is good.

      Yikes. Sorry I missed this earlier. ^_^;;;

      I like it. The thing about HnG is that it comes off as just an action-comedy/romantic-comedy title with little plot. As it turns out, there is a rather interesting plot, only Hata-sensei takes his time telling it.

    Not entirely true. Akamatsu has also made at least one reference to Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. It’s the subject of the Yaoi Doujinshi from Haruna’s circle Negi and Kotaro read right before the trip to Wales. The reference is even kept in the OAD adaptation, even punctuated by an added background scream from Itoshiki-sensei’s seiyuu.

    And Kumeta takes frequent shots at himself, portraying himself as a loser with no life. He treats himself with as much satire as he does show to everyone else, so I’d bet his ‘jealousy’ on Akamatsu is just part of his posturing as a Daffy Duck-esque loser jealous of Akamatsu’s ‘Always Better’ Bugs Bunny.

      >Akamatsu has also made at least one reference to Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

      I never knew it was a reference until just the other day. However, it would seem that Kumita-sensei jabs at Akamatsu-sensei quite frequently over the years.

    I highly sure it not true. in Mahou Sensei Negima 238 http://www.batoto.net/read/_/2295/mahou-sensei-negima_v26_ch238_by_mee-to-ichi/6 Well, look like translator mistake. because I check at someone who know japanese and my LC book. they said same thing at Chisame line. She said “Despair”*repeat* Obvious parody of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      The official translation used “bad” but again, I never heard of this being a jab at Kumeta-sensei. It may have been, but if so, it wasn’t really talked about back in the day. Kumeta-sensei’s jabs are much more in your face, and have been quite frequent. Indeed, he was the one who started things, going back to Love Hina, as I understand it.

    • OverMaster says:

      Well, it’s understandable. Kumeta is a satirist, while Akamatsu is not. It’s evident Kumeta would be far more prone to parodies and Take Thats.

      So Mrs. Akamatsu’s Cosplay Salon failed? Ouch. I have sometimes wondered about the reasons why Asuna and especially Chisame, who are supposed to be modeled after her, were hit that badly by Negima’s end (rejected by Negi and turned hikikomori, respectively) and now, for the first time, he doesn’t have an Asuna-Naru lookalike in his newest cast. I’m not saying, just wondering…

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      I’ve never read any of Kumeta-sensei’s works, so I was unaware of the satire angle. Then again, if Hata-sensei (Hayate the Combat Butler) used to be Kumeta-sensei’s assistant, then I guess he picked up his parody/satire stuff from Kumeta-sensei. Of course, Hata-sensei and Akamatsu-sensei are actually friends.

      >So Mrs. Akamatsu’s Cosplay Salon failed?

      I never knew she was even doing one. ^_^;

    Meh… Read or Die ep.1: Ken as Nenene, Kumita as a loser local writer with a bomb. 🙂

    hell’s up with the disappearing comments here?

    anyway i think this is more of a cross publicity stunt than anything

  6. […] old boss, Kumeta-sensei.  I know nothing of that manga, but I do know that Kumeta-sensei likes to tweak Akamatsu-sensei (UQ Holder!, Negima!, Love Hina, etc.).  Now I’m rather curious about the manga, so if […]
