UQ Holder Chapter 170

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Kuroumaru, Isana, and Honoka are all unconscious and are falling to the clouds. As such, Touta creates two additional blood clones of himself to rescue them. He sets up a camp in the ruins below the clouds. Unfortunately, Kuroumaru isn’t healing, nor can Touta regenerate his missing arm. The two clones are also missing arms. A weak Honoka gives them instructions and some ofuda to suspend the spread of poison in her and Isana’s body.

Touta shares some of his magical blood with Kuroumaru. This allows Kuroumaru’s body to mend somewhat. When Kuroumaru awakens, Touta asks what’s the deal is with Kuroumaru’s brother. As such, Kuroumaru explains why neither of them are able to properly heal. Kuroumaru’s brother uses a Fushi-barai attack that prevents immortals from regenerating.

Kuroumaru’s injury reopens, forcing Touta to use his abilities to force his magical blood through. However, since Kuroumaru’s body appears to be rejecting Touta’s blood, Touta uses his vampire powers to overcome this. This causes Kuroumaru to sprout wings and to realize it will make her into a girl.

Kuroumaru tells Touta there are two ways to remove the curses on both of them. First is to kill her brother. Touta rejects this. Second is to destroy the sword that caused the injury. The two discuss her situation more when suddenly Zankurou and Genshin appear and attack. They take Isana and Honoka hostage. They want Kurounaru’s body to defeat the Mage of the Beginning. Since they want to remove the shintai within Kuroumaru, she agrees to go with them. After Kuroumaru leaves, Touta finds himself slashed in half from top down.

Thoughts/Review:

Things are left on another cliffhanger with UQ Holder Chapter 170. But we get some interesting info as well.

UQ Holder Chapter 170

Anti-Immortal

One thing about having a story with immortals is that there’s no real life-or-death struggle. After all, immortals cannot die. And both Kuroumaru and Touta can regenerate. As such, no matter how tough the battle, they could regenerate, given time.

For UQ Holder Chapter 170, Akamatsu-sensei has taken that away from both of them. Touta has lost his arm, thanks to Kiroumaru’s attack. And even his clone creations don’t have a left arm.

Kuroumaru was sliced across the chest. And that wasn’t regenerating until Touta uses his abilities to help overcome that. And naturally, Akamatsu-sensei had Touta’s actions come in the form of a sexual innuendo.

More Kuroumaru

Another thing provided by UQ Holder Chapter 170 was a bit more about Kuroumaru. I had been under the impression that Kuroumaru’s clan experimented on Kuroumaru. However, Kuroumaru has an entity (the shintai) living within her body. Apparently, this entity visited a younger Kuroumaru as Kuroumaru lay dying. Whether or not the dream-memory is 100% accurate remains to be seen. But it seems that’s where Kuroumaru’s immortality came from.

UQ Holder Chapter 170

The other thing was Touta making Kuroumaru’s wings emerge during Kuroumaru’s “ikkuu” moment. My memory isn’t what it was, so I can’t remember if this is the first time we’ve seen her wings or not. But it is the first time Touta has seen them. And Kuroumaru seemed to think Touta’s actions would turn her into a (lovely) girl.

I suspect that Touta’s actions to save Kuroumaru’s life will be what ultimately save her from whatever death her clan has waiting for her. We’ll see how that goes.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

My mind is mush right now. So let me wrap up my review of UQ Holder Chapter 170 with some final thoughts.

  • I’m guessing one of Touta’s clones will make it to UQ Holder and warn them.
  • Kuroumaru was taken away. However, what became of Honoka and Isana? They are poisoned and in suspended animation through magic. I suppose Kuroumaru’s clan could have taken them as well.
  • Touta gets his Magia Erebea form sliced. We’ll see what method Akamatsu-sensei uses to overcome this.

In the end, I liked UQ Holder Chapter 170 for what it was. I’m looking forward to learning more about this shintai that is in Kuroumaru.

Not a bad chapter at all. I’m glad we are getting more backstory and going into other characters backstories and we see how it relates to the plot.

We can see how that despite UQ being an organization of powerful people, they are certainly not the only ones in the world.

A world where the protagonist does everything can make a world feel lifeless. Good to know we can see how others are reacting to the actions of the villain. So far the only actual party that does something is Fate’s group. And even then, they haven’t done much.

However on one hand I feel like these guys should have appeared earlier. The anti-immortal organization could have made a great rival or foil to UQ not just in terms of powers, but also their ideals and what stand for.

While the start of UQ was rather rocky, I was glad that there were some hints of world building when it wasn’t just two sides fighting each other. We got to see what life was like after Negi introduced magic to the world.
However after possessed Negi came back, there wasn’t less chances to see the world and even less interaction with other parties.

Overall, I feel like this is a case of better late than never.

I agree. Had Akamatsu-sensei lain out a plan for the series, what you suggest would have been perfect. But Akamatsu-sensei didn’t want to be bothered with a big story arc. So by the time he was basically forced to address one, it was basically too late.

Overall, I feel like this is a case of better late than never.

That’s a way of looking at it for sure. 😄

    I agree with the above.

The Immortal Hunters should’ve been more central characters to the story. I think they should’ve been introduced right after the Santa arc, instead of bogging us down with so much Negima.

Giving them this Super Hax Anti Immortality Cut just to have some kind of advantage of UQ, demonstrates how much of an afterthought they are.

Perhaps Kuromaru will get the Shintai extracted, but still remain immortal. Why do I think this? It’s because of Touta injecting his cells. So maybe Kuromaru might get access to M.E. while were at it.

I think your theory is a sound one.

  3. Kiboujin says:

I had a feeling it would be too much, and it was. A love Kuroumaru and is my ship with Touta, but dang Akamatsu!
I felt so sad about Kuroumaru’s parting smile with Touta. She’s going to have a rough time between now and when Touta will be able to get to her.
A lot of theories going around how Touta will pull himself together. I’m still holding on that Kiroumaru is trying to help Kuroumaru in his own way.

  4. Aki says:

THAT LET ME IN SCENE WAS TOO MUCH! AKATMATSU SHOULD JUST WRITE A DOUJIN!!! GAWD!

I am like so dead inside… I dont know if I should cringe or laugh so this is is like the 3rd person he forced himself on…

  5. Rob C. says:

Well, maybe this turn of events will improve the situation for manga. If people notice the story. Hopefully.

This twist events is the sort thing they been needing for the manga for while. Drama.
Perhaps Akamatsu-sensei didn’t think is audience was into that. (shrugs)

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I’ve been saying that I think Akamatsu-sensei just wanted to be more casual with UQ Holder. That aside, Sensei has had drama, but with Kirie’s reset power, and the immortality of the main characters, that negates the drama. As someone stated, the immortal hunters should have been introduced earlier to be a threat to UQ Holder. Alas, they weren’t brought in until the manga was winding down.

I’m a little late, but I do have to say that after this chapter, I ship Touta and Kuromaru harder than ever. If they’re not together by the end of this manga I’m going to be pissed. Touta is closer to Kuro than anyone else except Evangeline, and they’re so cute together. And Touta healing Kuro in this chapter was… intimate, to say the least.

    Anywho, take care, ANB.

I’m completely new to this manga, and I’ve read the entire series in the past month. I really love this series, but there’s a reason I can’t recommend this, and this chapter is one of them. 😛

That being said, this chapter is finally comes back to Kuromaru’s background, which I’ve wanted since I started reading(and looks like I was just in the nick of time to start reading). But I am really excited for the next chapter to see what happens with her.

      The ecchi factor, I presume?

Yeah, it is sad that it got delayed this long. However, better late than never, eh? 😁

      Thanks for writing!
