Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 140 Manga Review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Natsu reveals his lightning-fire attacks, giving Athena II a beat down. However, since Athena II has Wendy’s healing powers, the android quickly recovers from the damage.

Elsewhere, Lucy summons Loke to help Gray in battling Gennai and Kotetsu. Gray freezes the pair, but they break free. The ice gets transmuted to iron. As such, Lucy summons Aries to create a fluffy shield. With a stalemate in progress, Gennai summons Sai. The fact that Sai is still alive shocks Gray.

Sai uses his bond alchemy to try to get Lucy to change into someone she feels is weak. Gray explains what’s happening to Lucy. However, Lucy has a hard time pondering, forcing everyone to wait. Gray tries to press the fight, but Sai turns him into Natsu. This forces Natsu to change into Gray. Thus both characters are at a disadvantage.

Eventually, Lucy considers someone, causing Sai to turn Lucy into Brandish.

Thoughts/Review:

Well, here we go again with Sai’s return to use his switcheroo powers in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 140. One thing the chapter addressed was when Sai was able to turn some of them into gemstones. Basically, this is Mashima-sensei acknowledging that he’s making it up as he goes. At what point did Wendy, Gray, and Charle (Carla) have their minds on gemstones that conveniently were on a table in some store?

There’s zero consistency to Sai’s powers. It works according to the needs of the plot. So in this chapter, the villains practically have to twiddle their thumbs while they wait for Lucy to think of someone based on Sai’s requirement. In the end, she thinks of Brandish, which luckily for Sai, he somehow knows the moment she actually makes the choice. Obviously, comedy battle coming soon that will end with the heroes triumphant.

Having Gray switch with Natsu is for comedy effect as well. As such, I don’t think it is a stretch that we’ll have some gags of people trying to act like the person they’ve switched with. Well, except for Brandish. I don’t think she’s aware of Sai’s power, so she may freak out for laughs. We’ll see.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 140 is a chapter that few can get away with. But Mashima-sensei has a career of writing whatever he wants as the plot dictates.
