Lupin the 3rd: Voyage to Danger Review
ルパン三世『ルパン暗殺指令』
Lupin III: Dark Orders of Assassination
Since the Community Anime Reviews site is all but dead, I’m republishing some of my OG reviews from there. I have corrected obvious spelling errors though. I will add new notes in parenthesis, labeled “ANB note.” 😅 I won’t count these as part of the “Back to the Vaults” series as I have not rewatched them. That said, I do plan to do a “Back to the Vaults” watch for this special since it was apparently remade from the last episode of Lupin the 3rd: Part III 50.

Community Anime Review of Lupin the 3rd: Voyage to Danger
(ANB note: This series was originally reviewed on 12-JAN-2003.)
Zenigata is pulled off the Lupin case, gets drunk, and comes to Lupin to tell him the news. Zenigata’s new task is to find the organization known as “Shot Shell” and take them down. Lupin and crew decide to do just that. OK, that I can deal with because Lupin likes taking down the powerful and the idea of Zenigata and Lupin teaming up is interesting.
Since Lupin has a reputation of being the best in the thieving business, he agrees to steal a nuclear sub for Shot Shell in order to win their trust. Along the way, they rescue a nuclear scientist named Karen. This is lucky because being a nuclear scientist means you know how to drive a nuclear sub! Oh you didn’t know that did you. Yeah, I didn’t either and that’s where the problems started for me. I know there are a lot of unbelievable things that happen in Lupin titles, but this was hard to swallow for some reason.
Karen upon seeing Jigen is filled with hate for him. Apparently, he killed her father or something and she’s hated him ever since. Fortunately, they manage to patch their differences in order to defeat Shot Shell. Ah, isn’t life wonderful. It was just WAY to cliched for my tastes.
This is another one of those awful Lupin titles. It has been released by FUNimation as Voyage to Danger, but I won’t be shelling out any money for this thing. Nothing in this movie rang very true nor were the characters very interesting and the story bored me beyond belief.
Bottom line:
Another miss in the Lupin franchise.
