Meanwhile, Happy, Natsu, and Gray face Moonlight Divinity Hakune, who attempts to tempt them with ice versions of the women in their lives. Gray and Natsu are unfazed, so Hakune freezes them and takes them to Selene. When they wake, they are bound to the ceiling as Selene as a feast for her three Moonlight Divinities and other women.

Thoughts/Review:

Props to the translator/adapter of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 21 for NOT translating the term “youkai”. I’m not sure if I recall members of Fairy Tail actually fighting youkai in the past. The youkai in this episode were from actual Japanese mythology rather than invented ones like one might see in other series. Nevertheless, it did make for an interesting change of villains.

Still, there wasn’t much more of interest in the episode. The plot required the members of Team Natsu to get insta-defeated. Remember, these are the same folks who’ve taken down two other dragon gods and other, insanely OP folks. As such, for Team Natsu members to get insta-defeated makes my eyes roll somewhat.

Nevertheless, Selene is now portrayed as a nutter who stirs the pot for her amusement. As villain motives, I’m okay with that. I don’t have any opinions on Selene’s Moonlight Divinities. What I will say is that I thought is somewhat amusing that Natsu apparently holds thoughts of a harem while Gray holds thoughts only for Juvia. I didn’t expect that of Natsu.

Finally, Mashima-sensei worked in a way to bring back Aquarius to the story. Even though on Elentear, Lucy is able to summon her Celestial Spirits without keys, I never once thought we’d see Aquarius. But now that I’ve thought about it, it makes sense. When this is over, I have to believe Aquarius will threaten Lucy to find her key before Brandish does. 😂

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 21 wasn’t the most entertaining episode of the lot. However, the introduction of traditional, Japanese youkai was an interesting element. And Mashima-sensei found a way for Aquarius to return to the story.
