Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 19
葬送のフリーレン
Sōsō no Frieren 19
Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:
Frieren observes the sleeping Lawine and Kanne. She recalls how Heiter once said that party experiences vary depending on the party. The next morning, she has Lawine and Kanne go over what they know and comes up with a plan to capture their own Stille.
Meanwhile, Fern’s party has the first Stille. As such, Wirbel, Scharf, and Ehre attack them to steal it. Their ambush fails, thanks to Fern’s quick defenses. However, before the fight can continue, Lawine freezes the large lake, thus preventing Stille from going their to drink and preventing mage ambushes there.
While other mage parties go into a frenzy over this, Denken tells Richter and Laugen that this is part of Frieren’s plan. Denken’s party find the remains of another party, killed by flying Geisel monsters and left as bait for more prey. Denken’s party chat while Frieren’s party “poison” every watering hole with mana so that Stille will avoid them.
Meanwhile, Lawine and Kanne leave Frieren by a small pond. She cuts off her mana so that she’s undetected. The day passes, but eventually, a Stille lands on Frieren’s shoulder and is captured. This allows Denken to get her position. His party immediately go to attack. Elsewhere, Fern’s party battles Wirbel’s party. Fern fights Ehre, who’s amazed that Fern only uses basic offensive and defensive magic.
Thoughts/Review
And so the battle royal kicks off in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 19. While this first test for First-Class Mage teaches teamwork, it also teaches treachery. So the moment a party has captured a Stille, they are now fair game to have their prize stolen by other parties. I suppose this also teaches potential high level mages to always be wary.
We didn’t get to see how Fern’s party captured a Stille, but we did see how Frieren’s party did. Frieren’s plan to force the birds to come to her was a good one. Further, she got to understand Lawine and Kanne to use their skills to maximum advantage. However, once Denken locked onto her, Frieren’s party will have to battle his.
Speaking of battles, Madhouse does their usual great job depicting mage battles. The fight between Fern’s party and Wirbel’s party was most enjoyable. On the bloodthirsty side, Übel and Wirbel are a good match in combat. There’s a disconnect in his personality though as he’s a captain in a mage corps, yet acts like an insane killer.
Fern’s fight with Ehre was also enjoyable. However, I begin to see why Frieren made Fern a master at the basics. Those who specialize in a gimmick are possibly OP in their primary magic, but weak in other areas. However, Fern has no such weaknesses. Ehre claims Wirbel could defeat Fern, but I doubt that. The only one who could beat Fern is Frieren.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End 19 is more great action, but also some character introspection as well. And in a sign of good writing, these new mage characters are very interesting to the point I want to know more about them. Good stuff!
