Why I “Dropped” Tonikaku Kawaii (Fly Me to the Moon)
トニカクカワイイ
Hey gang. Recently, someone messaged me to ask why I no longer review the Tonikaku Kawaii manga. It is true that I used to chapter review the series. Indeed, I still do follow the manga series, so I haven’t “dropped” it in the sense that I stopped reading it. However, I did drop it from titles reviewed. Here’s why.
The Official Translation Sucks!
The biggest reason I stopped reviewing Tonikaku Kawaii is that the official translation sucks. It is full of errors at best, and rewrites at worst. I’m not going to bother recounting what the manga actually said vs. what the official English version made it say. Regardless, a similar problem happened with Hayate the Combat Butler, to the point where I stopped buying Viz’s product and simply purchased the entire Japanese tankoubon run.
Indeed, I’m doing that for Tonikaku Kawaii as well. I usually bulk-order from Japan to save on shipping costs. But in this way, I can support Hata-sensei, but not support Viz…well, at least not much. I still read the manga out of curiosity, but I just checked and a new chapter hasn’t dropped in ages. I hadn’t even realized this was the case. Apparently, it is on hiatus. 😅
The Manga is Adrift
Another reason I stopped reviewing Tonikaku Kawaii is that the manga series is adrift. Hayate the Combat Butler suffered from this at times. That’s because Hata-sensei kinda meanders around doing fluff stuff, then occasionally touches the plot. I get that pushing the main plot forward much more could end the series. But Hata-sensei hasn’t touched that in ages.
Right now, the series has several dangling plot threads, none of which are getting touched. While I don’t mind seeing little romantic stuff between Tsukasa and Nasa, it is kinda annoying that they don’t fully act like a married couple. I don’t mean showing their marital private moments. But at the very least, it shouldn’t be a question as to whether or not they’ve consummated their marriage.
Also, some of the fluff stuff of late is just boring. Right now, the series is focused on one supporting character (who’s name I can’t even remember without looking it up) crushing on Kaguya. It is boring and tedious and frankly, I don’t care. But we get a lot of time dealing with that. Instead, I’d rather Tsukasa open up to Nasa about these places they are visiting, then tell him how it was back in the day by showing the readers. Alas, that’s not happening.
There You Have It
So there you have it. Assuming it comes back from hiatus, I’ll probably still read the official Tonikaku Kawaii (and cringe). But I don’t plan to return to chapter blogging it. But if the series officially ends, I would do a series review.
