Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 02
フェアリーテイル 100年クエスト
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
In the sea-side town of Ermina, Natsu and company stop at the Hotel Journey. The the reception desk is a well-dressed fish on the counter. The fish “wakes” and becomes the human manager. He gives the group any room and instructs them to drink the welcome drink in their room. He then leaves for his date. Later, Gray wakes to find the city submerged, but he can breathe. The others are in their swimsuits, also able to breathe and talk under water.
The manager, as a fish, reveals that the town goes underwater at times. But when Gray reveals they are looking for the Water Dragon God, the manager and town fish become enraged. Meanwhile at Fairy Tail, Gajeel and Juvia briefly see Touka with a tail. Over at Saber Tooth, Jellal stops by, on the trail of Touka, whom he describes as very dangerous. Back in Ermina, Natsu, Lucy, Gray, Erza, Wendy, Happy, and Carla discuss the situation and the mission.
Lucy uses Gemini to transform them all into fish with human heads, save Wendy who’s an octopus. They learn that the townsfolk captured another human. Natsu, Lucy, and Happy find her caged. Despite their disguise, she senses they are human. A water dragon descends, whom everyone believes is the Water Dragon God. The woman easily dispatches the dragon and determines it isn’t the god. She identifies herself as a Dragon Slayer named Kiria, the Blade Dragon from the Diabolos guild.
Gray freezes her as Kiria attacks Lucy. When Kiria hears the dragon god will be angry, she breaks free of the ice. Erza arrives to attack the excited Kiria, but her guildmate, Madmole the Armor Dragon, blocks Erza’s blade with his head. Kiria wants to eat Natsu’s party. However, the apparent water god descends, removing all the water.
Thoughts/Review:
Well, one thing’s for sure. Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 02 follows the standard format lain out in the original Fairy Tail series.
Dragon Slayers
So, our new opponent guild, Diabolos, gets introduced in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 02. Based on how things ended in the first episode, I am surprised that Suijin-sama wasn’t the one, even though he shows up at the end. However, the introduction of Kiria ands Madmole did follow the standard Fairy Tail model. Members of Fairy Tail are doing “X”, then members of some other guild show up and reveal themselves to be super powerful. As such, the Fairy Tail members have to reach deep to ultimately defeat the other guild. And more often than not, those other members become allies.
Thus this episode sets up Diabolos as a powerful guild filled with apparent Dragon Slayers. At a minimum, Kiria appears to eat her opponents in order to gain their powers (hence the “Dragon Eaters” term). She also comes off as nuts. She kinda reminds me of Christina from Princess Connect! Re:Dive in how bloodthirsty she is. Then there’s the calm, collected Madmole, who establishes his credentials by tanking Erza’s sword attack with his head.
That aside, Natsu and Wendy are First Generation Dragon Slayers. Kiria and Madmole are Fifth Generation. To me, the First Generation slayers should trump the Fifth Generation slayers. But the story seems to suggest otherwise for the fight to come. Suijin’s presence causes the only unique element here. You have these Dragon Slayers out to get him, and you have Fairy Tail out to seal him. I can’t imagine these Diabolos members teaming up with the Fairy Tail members. So we’ll see how this plays out.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
Let me wrap up my review of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 02 with some final thoughts.
- I forgot how much “stupid” humor gets injected into these stories during tense moments.
- Interesting that Touka at Fairy Tail had a tail briefly show up. That suggests she’s not human. It reminded me of when Lina Inverse and company met the Golden Dragon Filia in Slayers Try. Even though she was in humanoid form, I recall her dragon tail occasionally popping out under her dress.
- I’d forgotten Lucy has the Star Dress outfits from the Celestial Spirits. I know she can still summon them (we saw Virgo get a cameo in the first episode), but I don’t know why none were summoned for the fight, especially Aquarius.
- Jellal and members of Saber Tooth show up in a cameo to further push the Touka mystery.
In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 02 is typical Fairy Tail shounen fodder.
