SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

As Team Natsu discuss things with Mystogan, Touka uses her magic to teleport in. She reveals she is from Elentear as is the White Mage. However, fear overtook the White Mage when as she believed Elentear to be in danger. Mystogan has his Fairy Tail search for the White Mage, whom Touka knows to be on Edolas. Once found, Team Natsu heads to her, where they learn her real name is Faris. She took the role of the missing White Mage.

Faris reveals that the purpose of Whiteout magic is to prevent Elentear’s destruction from too much magic. The Moon Dragon god Selene came to Faris with a proposition. Selene wanted Aldoron killed, supposedly as a means of self preservation. To that end, Selene threatened to destroy Elentear if Faris refused. As such, Faris absorbed the Creed of White Magic from cultists and lost herself in her mission.

Selene shows up, sitting on the disc of a portal. She reveals that she periodically kills a few humans on Elentear to reduce the magic burden there. However, her purpose in waking Aldoron was entertainment. Her words enrage Natsu, who attacks. She easily thwarts the attack and teleports them all to Elentear to a floating cloud.

Shortly after, a giant hand emerges and squishes the cloud, sending members of Team Natsu in different directions. Natsu, Gray, and Happy find themselves in a snowy region where the snow falls upward. Lucy finds herself alone in a jungle and under attack by a monster. She doesn’t have her Celestial keys, but thanks to the excess magic, Taurus comes to her aide. Elsewhere, Lucy and Wendy face “ghosts”.

Thoughts/Review:

While we got a hint of this in episode 19, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 20 provides the vehicle for the series villain White Mage to be redeemed.

Redeeming the Villain…Again

The first part of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 20 was mostly filled with gags and exposition. However, that eventually leads to the part of the story in the episode where the “White Mage”, now known as Faris, gets redeemed. Mashima-sensei love to redeem his villains so that former enemies of Fairy Tail are now their friends. Brandish is such a case, and we’ve seen her a lot in this series.

That said, while I don’t have a problem with villains getting a redemption arc, Faris’s redemption seems more driven by plot contrivance than prior character redemptions. Up until last episode, Faris was the “White Mage”, who easily controlled Fairy Tail to do her bidding. I believe she also murdered several folks. Thus she had a truly sinister past.

Now, Mashima-sensei wants us to forget all that stuff he did to make Faris a scary villain. No, now he needs her to be a sympathetic ally. As such, we get a hand wave explanation that says, “Oh! Faris acted under duress. And to save her world, she committed great acts of evil. Please pity poor Faris!” However, I cannot pity her. And while there’s a TINY chance that Mashima-sensei may have her revert to evil, I don’t think he’s done that on previous, “redeemed” villains.

Regardless, during the split up, it seems that Touka and Faris may have ended up together. I say “may” ’cause they were the only two characters not shown after the team got split due to plot demands. If I’m right, then Touka will forgive Faris for possessing her, and the two will prove to be valuable in defeating Selene.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, much of Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest 20 felt like filler (but it is filler from the manga) with a large side of exposition and a small side of comedy. My only question is, “When’s Diabolos showing up again?”
