Sōsō no Frieren Chapter 143

Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Fern has Stark lead them back to Frieren’s table after Iris and Routine leave the party. Serie asks why Sense allowed Übel and Land to do the raid. Sense is confident that the pair have an advantage over the Shadow Warriors.

Meanwhile, Iris and Routine appear to have the drop on Übel and Land. However, Land fires lightning at Iris while Übel fires a slice at Routine. Iris throws a couple of darts at Übel, but Land intercepts them. Übel pushes him out of the way to thwart Routine’s next attack.

Elsewhere, Kanone reports to Captain Fräse that both the Shadow Warriors and the Continental Magic Association mages have taken steps to conceal the fight. Captain Fräse orders to only monitor the situation while Clematis orders Routine to attack. The fight continues with Routine grabbing a shield, which Übel’s magic cannot cut. Land uses Iris’s darts to fire them back at her.

Iris cannot fathom why poison isn’t working on Land. She realizes he’s a clone. Land grabs her by the neck, but she’s resistant to his shocking grasp spell. She attempts to stab his neck, which he instinctively blocks. Meanwhile, Routine presses the physical attack with sword and shield. Übel takes damage, but she cannot overcome Routine’s shield. However, Übel realizes that thanks to magic, she can see things Routine and Iris cannot, thus she just needs to time her attacks just right.

Thoughts/Review

Well, things are going down hard in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Chapter 143. And the biggest problem with the chapter is that we’ll have to wait two weeks for the next one. 😭

Faction Actions

I find it interesting that both the Shadow Warriors and the CMA are concealing Übel and Land’s fight with Iris and Routine in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Chapter 143. That saves the Magic Special Forces from having to do it. Based on Captain Fräse ordering her forces to not interfere in the fight, I suspect she wants to see who will come out on top. Then she will have her troops take on the winner.

As to the Shadow Warriors, Kreis, Wehrlos, and Lore are not at the ball. I recently finished volume 13 of the Viz release. I need to read the chapters not in book form to remind myself what happened with those three. The chapter does remind us that Fern nearly killed Lore. Clematis is observing the fight from an audio perspective. So depending on how chatty Übel and Land are, he could get a lot of intel.

As to the CMA mages, I loved how Fern and Stark used their dance to conduct surveillance. I like how Sense planned for Übel and Land to basically lead the assault. For mages, Übel and Land do quite well vs. warriors. Also, they way Sense says she’ll have an advantage over the Shadow Warriors, I strongly suspect she’ll get in the fray at some point.

Übel and Land vs Routine and Iris

Most of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Chapter 143 is dedicated to Übel and Land’s fight with Routine and Iris. I was wrong about my theory that Übel and Land would be hiding behind the armor stands and get the drop on Routine and Iris. We learn that Land is in fact a clone. He can control two, so it is possible a second one of him shows up.

I suspect Übel is also a clone though. She requires empathy with another person to use their magic. Übel has been working on understanding Land every since she met him. I think she has done this. I base this on how Übel and Land worked in tandem at the beginning of the fight. Iris is on Übel’s back, yet knows when to duck to miss Land’s blasting Iris. At the same time, she uses her cutting magic to slice at Routine, protecting Land. They continued protecting each other without saying anything, until they got separated.

That suggests to me that Übel has already empathized with Land. Further, during the combat, she’s still able to keep an eye on Land. In addition, she opts to not do a suicide attack because Land wouldn’t approve. If I’m right, she’s doing what Land does, pretending that the clone is real.

Even if I’m wrong, I’m sensing how Übel will win her fight with Routine. I’m not exactly sensing how Land wins except to allow a clone to die and bring in a fresh clone. We’ll see.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Let me do some final thoughts for Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Chapter 143.

• Regarding Übel’s cutting power, I wonder why she has no trouble believing she can cut a pillar or wall, but not a shield? Wouldn’t it be hilarious if she observed Stark cutting a shield with his weapon and then is able to do so after that.
• It is obvious that Kreis will have some kind of conflict with Sein. As I said earlier, I need to reread chapters to remind myself on what happened with Wehrlos, and to see how injured Lore is.
• I wonder what else Fern and Frieren said while Sense talked with Serie.

In the end, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Chapter 143 was a really enjoyable, battle-filled chapter. This will look amazing when animated, assuming the production quality remains the same. Now to wait for two weeks. 😭
