Thoughts/Review:

Mahou Sensei Negima! ~Mou Hitotsu no Sekai~ OAD - 04Hmmmm…I had no idea how this final episode (not counting the “Extra” OAD coming out in a few days) would play out since supposedly, these four OAD episodes and the movie would comprise the entire Magic World arc.  Clearly, that could never be the case and indeed, all this OAD series did was to get Negi through his training.  Thus, I would expect the movie to have what should be that awesome scene with Negi and Asuna rescuing Setsuna, Kaede, Nodoka, and the treasure hunters followed by Negi and Kotaro winning the tournament.  That’s all the movie will have time for.

Mahou Sensei Negima! ~Mou Hitotsu no Sekai~ OAD - 04Due to constraints of time, I didn’t look to see what all was cut.  I was glad to see the short stories survive though.  The way SHAFT did the character designs and some of the scenes, I felt that much of the impact was lost, such as Konoka’s and Setsuna’s reunion.  SHAFT attempted to make faux-Eva look evil and I approve of that, but in the process, the character designs of Eva didn’t look a great deal like her and indeed looked cheap.  On the other hand, I thought the scene from Sayo’s reunion with Ku Fei was handled quite nicely, capturing the cuteness of Sayo-chan in doll form, especially after Ku Fei insulted her.

Then again, did we REALLY need to fan service Sayo-doll?  *_*

Mahou Sensei Negima! ~Mou Hitotsu no Sekai~ OAD - 04Also, while the fight between Kaede and the black dragon was mostly OK (the animators didn’t actually have Kaede’s chains bind the beast, which was a negative), the dragon’s skin looked awful.  As such, the dragon looked like it had been photocopied and pasted into the scenes, or at the very least, a photocopy of some dark pattern was used to fill in the dragon’s color and thus made it looks to horribly fake.  That was a real disappointment considering how cool Akamatsu-sensei makes dragons look.  Had SHAFT not done this (which very well may have been for style and cost cutting), the scene would have been better.

Going back to Eva, the fight in the Phantasmagoria was handled pretty well, though again, the character design issues I mentioned before rear their ugly head.  So not seeing Eva as I would like at times was a distraction to me.

Finally, I thought Aisha had blonde hair for some reason.  I guess not.  ^_^;;;

Mahou Sensei Negima! ~Mou Hitotsu no Sekai~ OAD - 04

Still, after being highly annoyed at some of SHAFT’s actions in episode 3, I was pleasantly surprised to see some of my favorite moments make it into the final episode of the series.  Hopefully, the “Extra” episode will rock even more.

    Yeah, some of the character designs didn’t really agree with me either, Rakan’s face seems wider than it should be, like his facial proportions were enlarged…idk if its just me, Ku didn’t look like Akamatsu-sensei’s “Ku”

    I have to agree on a lot of the animation issues. The dragon looked horrible with the barely-moving texture; they could have improved that scene a lot by just giving it flat coloring. For that matter, Kaede’s aerial movements in the scene were also off, just like in the first OAD battle. The way the backgrounds move around just make her movements seem incredibly strange. I swear she jumps in a bell curve…

    I think the biggest problem with Eva was her eyes. They just rarely looked right, especially in her first appearance. I’m still not sure what they were going for when she came out of the scroll. It was more like “elongated child” than her normal adult glamour.

    I did enjoy the battle in the scroll, but it feels like they cut a little too much out of Chisame’s part. Anyone watching it who hasn’t read through those chapters will be wondering what the hell she’s talking about when she’s asking for more herbs, and they never really explain why Negi’s getting hurt. Overall the episode just can’t stand on its own.

    I was disappointed with Fake Eva and Negi’s melee encounters during the fight. Aside for the moment when they showed Negi from Evangeline’s perspective, their bodies remained completely stiff while their hands moved really fast. The animators need to take a lesson from other action series like DBZ.

    When two people are fighting they put their weight behind each strike. No force is put forward if it’s just your arms flailing about. It’s wierd because Akamatsu-Sensei seems to show that pretty well in the manga.

    I agree well i did enjoy itbut there’s a lot of problems with the animation well i guess they had a hard time doing it cause they are not really for animation >.> and well there’s a difference from the manga and anime as shown there are a lot of mistakes and stiff motion and probably not enough info cause they compressed it for the time hmmm i think that they’re not raelly used to animation >.> but well its an ok animation i like the shundo part XD can’t deny that 😀 well i guess its 8.5/10 for me but the story is 10/10 😀

    Aside from the “Extra” OAD that comes out this month in Japan, the next anime project is the theatrical movie.

    Enough with the OADs just remake the series already!, ANB I noticed Vol 28 of Negima had an Q&A section in english did your question get published?. T24

  9. AstroNerdBoy says:

    My questions wouldn’t appear until volume 32 or 33 (not sure which). Canon Rap will likely translate and I’ll immediately know my question when I see it, assuming it is chosen (which is a VERY long shot).
