My Fall 2011 Anime Watching — BUSY!
Lately, I haven’t watched a whole lot of new anime with each new season, but the upcoming Fall 2011 season looks to have several anime titles for me to watch, making my life more interesting when I have free time. So, let’s take a quick look-see at what I plan on watching and why. ^_^
Fate/Zero — I was a latecomer to the goodness of the Fate/stay night anime adaptation of the hentai visual novel of the same name. While I’ve never gotten around to doing the visual novel (for the story, not the hentai stuff), I admit that a story going ten years earlier in the storyline featuring Shirou’s foster father and Rin’s father (as well as Saber) fascinates me. That backstory plays an important role in the Fate/stay night story and so hopefully, this anime will do that backstory justice. I will admit that I’ll miss Rin and the others.
Shakugan no Shana III — I’ve been a fan of this franchise from the beginning. Indeed, it would be great to be fluent in Japanese in order to read the original light novel series but that aside, I hear the anime is a pretty decent adaptation (I assume that to be true). Regardless, this is being billed as the final series in the franchise, which is a bit of a bummer but I’m really looking forward to it. I know the Shakugan no Shana S OVA series certainly made a MAJOR tease for what’s possibly in store for us.
Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing — I’m torn on this one. I loved Last Exile and even bought the DVD series even though the subtitles weren’t ANB-approved. However, all of those characters from Last Exile are apparently gone in favor of new kid pilots and the like. That’s what has me uncertain because I’m afraid we’re just going to have a rehash of sorts of the original story. We’ll see.
Lupin III (4th TV Series) — I’ve been a fan of Lupin III since I saw Castle of Cagliostro. The OVA’s and movies have been a mixed lot over the years, but hopefully, a new TV series will do right. I do find it interesting that the seiyuu for this series haven’t been announced (nor much else for that matter). It wouldn’t surprise me if the new series had new seiyuu as all of them, sans Lupin’s seiyuu who’s actually the third one to do the role in Japan (and who sounds so much like the original seiyuu, its freaky).
As an aside, I have access to the original and 2nd TV series. I really should sit down and blog it but you know how I am. *_*
Man, and you think you’re busy?
My list is many times larger!
Persona 4, Ika Musuke S2, Working!! S2, Fate/Zero, Boku wa Tomodachi, Mirai Nikki, Shana III, and maybe Guilty Crown.
The only standout series I plan to keep up with is Lupin III and the new revised version of Hunter X Hunter. Oddly enough being an anime fan in his 30’s I’ve noticed that I don’t keep up with current trends and tend to be into either revisions of older material or Shonen Jump stuff.
So you admit that you checked out Fate/Stay Night for the hentai, but haven’t gotten around to the story elements yet!
😛
On a more serious note…
I might take a look at Persona. Or I might hold off until after I finally get around to playing the game. Not really sure what’s airing this season otherwise or what I might want to watch. Though I haven’t really watched much this season, either (just Blood-C – which suddenly got a LOT gorier over the last couple of episodes – and Ao no Exorcist). I could use a good mecha series, but even bad mecha series seem to be in short supply lately…

*lol* Well, I was thinking more in terms of real life commitments, my own natural procrastination tendencies and love of old video games (or something like War Metal on Facebook), and my need to get the TM!R FAQ site an upgrade. ^_^;;; Basically, this new season is going to force me to be more productive blog-wise, which ain’t a bad thing but I know me so I wonder what will suffer instead. ^_^;;;;

Never watched/read Hunter X Hunter, so that was an easy pass for me. Lupin III though…I’m hoping for goodness but prepared for awfulness.

Oddly enough, I’m right there with you…mostly. *lol* Seriously though, all four new anime titles I’m planning on watching are all sequels or spinoffs to stuff I’ve already watched and thus have a connection with. For the summer season, I only picked up Usagi Drop after some recommendations from folks I’ve known for years with similar tastes to mine spoke words that made me sit up and take notice.

*LOL* Well, we all have to have our priorities. ^_~
Seriously though, I have seen a few of the hentai images and a lot of the non-hentai images. I understand the visual novel is actually rather limited on the hentai stuff and more focused on the story, but I just can’t bring myself to do it, even though I enjoyed the anime a lot.
Blood-C — isn’t that CLAMP? (Checking…) Yeah, that’s CLAMP’s anime-only project with no original manga series. I’m not sure why I didn’t start that one with the CLAMP connection.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to write a “Why Mecha?” piece. ^_^
for me its Fate/Zero and Guilty Crown. But where is my panty and stockings Gainax promised?
Regarding F/SN, yes, the hentai stuff is very limited- only five scenes in a game that takes tens of hours to finish- and you can quickly skip them by pressing ctrl. And its reccomended that you do so. I repeat, IF YOU EVER PLAY THIS GAME, SKIP THE H-SCENES. The visual novel is awesome, but the h-scenes, OH GOD THE H-SCENES T_T!! Let’s just say they’re horrible and end there, before i remember anything more. Anyways, I strongly recommend playing the visual novel before watching the anime. First of all, the game is great. DEEN’s adaptation is nothing compared to the original. Even the first, weakest path most of anime’s scenariois much more entertaining, Shiro doesn’t appear so stupid, since you know his reasoning( yes, he actually is thinking… usually), but the true ride starts with Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven’s Feel paths. This is where most champions get their chance to shine, and this is where Shiro’s badassitude trully shows off. Also, these two paths contain most links to the prequel, and playing through them first will make watching Fate/Zero much more enjoyable.
Anyways, regarding this FAll anime series- how long will Usagi Drop continue to air? I hope it won’t end before F/0 because boy, are you gonna need something to lift your spirits after Fate breaks your soul. The fourth Heaven’s Feel is hell. Forget about women and children, forget about idealistic, dorky protagonist, no more cooking with Shirou. Murder, hatred, greed, betrayal- these are the thingswaiting in the Fourth Holy Grail War. The main protagonist is just as, if not more ruthless as his enemies. And the whole ordeal doesn’t end well. You know many things went wrong just by watching the Fate anime, but you can’t begin to imagine just to what extent everything’s gone to hell.
Tl,dr: Play the VN, enjoy the anime^_^.
>but I just can’t bring myself to do it, even though I enjoyed the anime a lot.
I don’t know how you feel about buying vs downloading the VN, but there is version of it floating around with the ecchi scenes removed. Even better, you can also get a patch to put in the voice files from the PS2 version, Realta Nua(voice actors from the anime), since the original pc version didn’t have them.

Persona’s a spin-off, as well. In this case, it’s based on the most recent game in Atlus’s fairly successful RPG series with the same name.

That, I can’t help you with. ^_^;;;

That’s what others have recommended.

*lol* Thanks for that bright spot to look forward to. ^_~ I’ll try to have some “uppers” around. ^_^;;;

Yeah, it was released H-free for some of the platforms in Japan. I think the PC version has everything. I’m not sure what I have. I’d have to remember to look when I get home. ^_^;;;

Yeah, I had forgotten about Persona but other than name recognition, I don’t know anything about it.
No what I meant was, someone(a fan) removed the scenes from the pc version. You can find it on Hongfire.
Also, no matter what version you have, make sure you get a hold of the voice patch. It really adds a whole lot to an already epic story.

People seem to either love it or hate it, with few in between. The only comment I’ll make about it is that criticisms about the story moving too slowly probably have a point.
I’ve also noticed that the Appleseed series is finally coming out. It’s not being released on TV, though. They’re using alternate distribution channels. I’m not particularly impressed with the artwork, and the first episode jumped all over the place plot-wise. So I’ve got some strong reservations about it. But it’s Appleseed, which means that even if its pure crap I’m going to have to watch it.
Loved the manga. Disappointed that none of the animated stuff has been anywhere near as good.

Maybe its just me, but it seems that CLAMP is going that way on all their titles these days.

I don’t think I watched the original OVA series from 1988. I’m pretty sure Robert had it, but in RAW form and I was never that keen on watching untranslated anime.

Wasn’t even a series, really. iirc, that one was a one-shot OVA that was long enough to be a movie (I saw it once – don’t remember any breaks in it).
The two recent movies have pretty good animation. But the story on the first one is very cliched. And the second one has both the usual issues that turn up when John Woo is involved as well as additional strangeness above and beyond. As well as the complete disregard for the setting established within the manga.
The one bright point about the new series so far is that it at least manages to get some of the background trivia correct. That at least slightly counterbalances some of the other strangeness that’s been added (for instance, what does Appleseed have to do with the 12 Labors of Hercules?).

Ah. I hadn’t realized.
I haven’t watched Lupin III in a while. It’ll be good to see it again!
I’m thinking Lupin III is the last thing that will show up. :-/ ANN didn’t even have it listed in their fall preview article. 🙁
