Haiyore! Nyarlko-san – 02

這いよれ!ニャル子さん/Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 02

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 02Mahiro and Nyarlko face a swarm of Nightgaunt, so Nyarlko defeats them with a special hand grenade. Mahiro questions why she hasn’t gone after the organization coming after him. She explains that until now, the time hasn’t been right.  As time stops, Nyarlko and Mahiro ride the creature Dagon-kun, along with other monster-aliens on similar creatures, to the Cthulhu city of R’lyeh.  There, a large Disney-esque theme park resides, causing Nyarlko to become very excited until a fork from Mahiro brings her back to reality and the task at hand — stopping the underground organization from having an illegal auction of contraband.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 02Inside the auction house, the auctioneer (a Noden) is not impressed by Nyarlko’s threats since he’s brought in protection in the form of Cthugha, aka: Cthuko.  Nyarlko explains to Mahiro that she and Cthuko were in grade school together and had fought many times. The auctioneer sends them off to the Noden dimension, which halves Nyarlko’s power but doubles Cthuko’s. Nyarlko is in trouble with the fight and is snared on a bed, where Cthuko attempts to have her way with Nyarlko, proclaiming her love for Nyarlko.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 02When Cthuko hears of Nyarlko’s love of Mahiro, she becomes angry and vows to kill Mahiro. This enrages Nyarlko, who changes form to a Japanese superhero-type in a power suit.  She defeats Cthuko as Mahiro finds himself up for auction. He uses Nyarlko’s “charm” that she gave him, which in fact summons her back, causing the auction attendees to flee in terror. When Nyarlko and Mahiro learn that the auctioneer had planned to use Mahiro in a gay ero-drama, Mahiro requests Nyarlko destroy the auctioneer, which she gladly does. Returning to Earth, they say a tearful farewell, Mahiro revealing he does care for Nyarlko. However, when he gets home, he finds Nyarlko there and wanting to have sex in addition to promising him to protect him forever.

I didn’t find this episode as funny as the first, and in some spots, it was downright disturbing.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 02

The arrival of Cthuko was not unexpected, but as I mentioned previously, her current character design takes away the constant “hot-and-cold” presence I felt she had in Haiyoru! Nyaru-ani.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 02

While I remember Cthuko lusting for Nyarlko in Nyaru-ani, off the top of my head, I don’t remember her coming close to raping Nyarlko. I know she was very amorous and lusted for Nyarlko, but Cthuko tying up Nyarlko and forcing herself on Nyarlko made me uncomfortable to say the least. I’m guessing the Japanese production staff thought it was funny.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 02

I loved the obvious parody reference to Disneyland/Disney World.  However, the best parody reference came from Nyarlko having the pirate sail from One Piece on “Dagon-kun,” complete with other quotes from One Piece.

(As an aside, one day I’m going to have to write a piece that challenges the notion that leaving “-kun” in “Dagon-kun,” “-chan” in “Hydra-chan,” and “-san” in “Mahiro-san” is lazy, but IGNORING the honorifics and pretending they don’t exist isn’t lazy.)

Finally, I’ve yet to get one of Nyarlko’s exclamations when she gets attacked by Mahiro with a fork. I did look up “Gando Rowa” on a whim, and discovered it is from Space Runway Ideon, a mecha anime series from Tomino-sensei, who created Mobile Suit Gundam.

So, while this episode wasn’t as funny and had a disturbing part, overall, I liked it and look forward to more.

Pretty much concur with your perspective on this episode. While I wasn’t quite creeped out by the near-rape I did think that part was lacking in inspiration and funness (not a word, I know, but that’s how I roll!) and slowed the ep. down.

I’d really like to read your take on honorific translations, by the way! Please do that!

I will, but it will take some time to properly craft. And it will likely be a longer piece.

Unfortunately (for some), perversion like that is to be expected from modern comedy anime. Though Kuko’s hand did go further than most XD

Space CQC Enhancer was strangely awesome and completely ridiculous at the same time. My biggest laughs came from the whole scene after she came out of the little box portal.

Yeah, that was funny because one didn’t know what kind of thing would be in the box.
