UQ Holder Chapter 42 Manga Review (Time for four questions.)

ユーキューホルダー! Manga Review
UQ Holder Chapter 42

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

UQ Holder Chapter 42 Manga Review Fate says he’ll answer one question each from Ikkuu, Karin, Kuroumaru, and Touta, citing the fact that he knows a great deal. Yukihime vouches for Fate’s knowledge, so Touta is about to ask something when Karin stops him. Fate warns them that they can’t collaborate on their questions.

Ikkuu wants to know why Fate wants Touta, so Fate reveals that Touta’s grandfather, Negi Springfield, is still alive and in need of rescue, something only Touta can help with. With Negi back, Fate can save the world.

Karin asks whom Negi loved most — Fate or Yukihime. Yukihime is not pleased with the question and Fate has no interest in that, though he knows Negi was popular.

Kuroumaru asks if it is urgent that Fate take Touta now.  Fate says he’s waited 20 years, so it isn’t urgent.

Touta asks if Fate killed his parents, which Fate confirms. Touta vows to settle the score and break Fate’s neck the next time he sees him. Fate says that when Touta has improved, he can find Fate at the top of the tower.

With that, Fate leaves by blasting out of the caverns under the UQ Holder HQ. Kirie is not pleased to see this, and Yukihime asks herself why Fate had to make such a show in his departure.

Thoughts/Review:

So, Negi is alive. I guess Akamatsu-sensei really is trying to make UQ Holder into Negima, only with new characters and little of the baggage.

That aside, we got four questions, but did we get a lot of answers beyond the fact that Negi is alive, possibly sealed somewhere. To that end, I think it is time that Touta has a conversation with Eva to clear some things up. Further, he should avail himself of the opportunity to ask Eva about Magia Erebea and beyond.

Touta gets kudos for not asking the dumb question, though he tried to ask one.  It looks like Touta now has a purpose in life. How fortunate that Touta’s dream of going to the top of the elevator tower coincides with the place where Fate lives. I just hope this turns Touta into a better character.

Karin’s question made me laugh. That’s so clearly Akamatsu-sensei’s way of saying, “I’m not telling you jack about whom Negi hooked up with, but you could infer that Negi may have been very intimate with some of his battle harem, including Eva.” Still, Karin loses awesomeness points with the question.

Kuroumaru should become a lovely lady already. Just saying. ^_~

Finally, I couldn’t help but be amused by Kirie’s reaction to Fate’s escape from the caverns. Well, her plan was rather whacked, but oh well.

I’m sorry I don’t have more analysis. I’ve had so little sleep over the past few days, I’m having a hard time thinking. That said, I’ll try to respond to whatever comments you guys have in regards to the chapter.

Negi X Eva that sounds plausible. It would be funny in the end if it turns out that Eva is Touta grandmother.

    • NT says:

Considering that Eva threatened to attack fate and he decided to just end that, it does make me wonder.

      • Dargor says:

Nah, Fate would have said flat out if that was the case. Eva being Eva would never let anyone live to tell the tale that she has anything besides grudging respect for either Negi or anyone else.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

While I don’t think Eva is Touta’s grandmother (but with magic, who can say?), I tend to suspect that Eva and Negi may have had a dalliance, even if they weren’t actual lovers.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      Assuming she can give birth.

  2. Magine says:

Well, this chapter explains some things

Negi is alive! but, Where is him? What did happen years ago with him? Is Lifemaker in his body? Didn’t they defeat to him?

There is still questions without answer

I was so surprised when Fate told

“rescuing your grandfather, would mean saving everyone in the solar system all twelve billion souls”

and about Touta, he is the only one who can free Negi, but, How he can do it? with his blood? with exchange of soul?

But, the question more incredible is the question of Karin

Oh my… When she told to him “relax, I’ll get to the heart of this. this question is critical” and after she says the question X’D

I wonder why is Evangeline avoids the answer of Fate, they were only master and disciple, weren’t they? Unless in truth they were lovers XD

Well, now that Fate can wait for quite a while. Touta can become more strong since he has an objective now

I don’t know if Fate really killed the parents of Touta, they had swords in his body, but, it might have been another person that knew about magic

Now, I would like to know what Evangeline will say Karin in his office and if Touta will tell Evangeline about the Magia Erebea once and for all (He says that will tell to Evangeline, but he never do that)

Fate nearly hits Kirie, when he left the underground, if it had happened, Kirie had died and again they would have to begin again XD

It wouldn’t surprise me if they did cross the line.

If Fate didn’t directly do it, then he indirectly caused it in my opinion.

Anyway, you’ve got a lot of good questions here.

I’m glad that it looks like Touta is going to have to train now, I hope we get an explanation for how he has magia erebea.

This is the second time we didn’t see Asuna in the image of grown-up Negi with some of his harem, I think this Akamatsu hinting that we’re in the timeline where Negi grew-up without Asuna, or it could be a massive troll on his part.

I’m really looking forward to the next arc, this has been really good set up for future events.

    • cold_menthol says:

I always thought there is a better chance that this is timeline B. In timeline C, Asuna is “alive and kicking”, which really helps Negi and co. defeated LM and rescued Nagi within 10 years after 3-A graduated. However, in UQ Holder!, they fought LM just 20 years ago.

But well, that flashback panel seems to hint this is closer to timeline C. I mean, try comparing those girls’ outfit with their outfit in Negima’s last chapter, which was in timeline C (except for Nodoka and Chachamaru, who seem to wear their work outfits).

Or, yes, it could be that Akamatsu-sensei is just trolling us by showing that panel..
Btw, I am really not sure who the girl on the right is. Ako?

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

The wildcard element is Kirie and her time jumping. We might be in timeline B-57 because of her (meaning taking the original B timeline from Negima, and then Kirie changing things 57 times by jumping back in time).

Btw, I am really not sure who the girl on the right is. Ako?

        I think so.

      Ditto.

Always watch out for the troll. *lol*

It will be interesting to see wre this goes.

  4. Cube says:

I disagree on Karin losing points because of this >_>

If anything, I love how stoically she took Eva’s summon to her office for asking that question

    • cold_menthol says:

      I think so too.

Unlike Kuromaru, Karin is more “devoted” to Eva than to Touta, so I think her question suits her well.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

As I mentioned on a board somewhere, she knew she was in for a spanking. *lol*

  5. […] This week, we’ve got spoiler information and a couple of spoiler images from the upcoming UQ Holder chapter 42 courtesy of Hata and ChaosProphet. (My review of UQ Holder chapter 42 should come out Wednesday.) […]

  6. Aki says:

So negi is alive which I’ve always believed in but I have a question… Which direction will uq holder go, touta talking to Eva, doing more missions, more info about neo ala alba, meeting old members or training arc?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, a lot of folks believed that. I didn’t because I didn’t think at the time that Akamatsu-sensei would make UQ Holder mimic Negima so hard in terms of plot elements.

  7. i think this chapter is best , it’s not only renew the main character ‘s ambitions but also somehow set Neo Ala Alba aside(Fate doesn’t need to capture Touta anymore since the kid gonna go and give him himself) (and hope for more new characters ?)

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Fate doesn’t need to capture Touta anymore since the kid gonna go and give him himself

That’s a good point. I agree — Fate will no longer come after Touta because he knows that Touta will eventually come to him. Since one of the questions established that there’s no rush, then Fate can go back to his tower and wait.

  8. shadowofthevoid says:

Well, we got questions and three of the four got answers. Two of those were pertinent to the overarching plot. Looks like UQ Holder is slowly morphing into a proper direct sequel to Negima, but with Negi taking Nagi’s place as the missing legendary ancestor. Of course, we still haven’t got any confirmation of who Negi hooked up with, something I hope is finally revealed before the series ends. Speaking of love, Fate is in serious denial of his massive man-crush on Negi.

Now with Fate back on his merry way, where do we go from here?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Looks like UQ Holder is slowly morphing into a proper direct sequel to Negima, but with Negi taking Nagi’s place as the missing legendary ancestor.

For me, UQ Holder is becoming more of a clone of Negima set in the Akamatsu-verse (where all his manga is set) as a sequel to Negima.

Of course, we still haven’t got any confirmation of who Negi hooked up with, something I hope is finally revealed before the series ends.

I wouldn’t bank on it. A lot of harem writers decide to not reveal whom their lead character chooses. The closest thing here is the Konoe family name, but that’s no guarantee that Negi hooked up with Konoka.

Although Akamatsu-sensei has never shown a propensity to have his male lead end up with a harem, Negima could be the start of that.

  9. cold_menthol says:

IIRC, in chapter 37, Kuromaru said his/her hometown was saved 60 years ago. Now he/she said 80 years ago. What is this? Plot twist? Another blunder? Mistranslation?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      It is difficult enough for me to keep up with the times without the mistakes. *lol* Not sure what’s going on there. ^_^;

  10. NT says:

Hey, aside from all that did anyone notice the loli fanservice that was snuck in there?

  11. mr. Poneis says:

There should be five questions… they just plainly forgot Kyrie efforts in this matter?

When Fate was censored I was pretty sure that was cause the conversation shifted to Evangeline unhealthly obsession with Nagi… what should turn Karin’s question funny but meaningless… if her objective wasn´t other thing…

    Eva: Karin…
    Karin: Hai, Yukihime-sama
Eva: See me in my office later…
    Karin : As you wish…

She really had a harsh time on the moon…

    And Negi is somehow alive?

Take that stupid tombstone red herring!!!

    Até mais ver
    mr. Poneis
