UQ Holder Chapter 50

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

UQ Holder Chapter 50Karin is in the grasp of multiple hands in the toilet, but she summons her sword and slices them before stabbing through the bathroom stall door to nail Sayoko. Sayoko is uninjured, but seems out of it a bit. Karin asks how she could kill so many innocent people. Sayoko rejects this, saying there’s no such thing as an innocent person, but she’s been careful to only kill the worst. However, Sayoko’s features become distorted as she says she’s out of time and must kill them all.

Karin uses an exorcising fist and her exorcist blade, slicing the girl up. Karin thinks she’s won, but Sayoko’s hair snares Karin. The girl comes back together, taking Karin’s sword, then casts a dark magic spell, causing Karin to slam through stalls and into the wall. The attack has sapped Karin of her strength, and she’s surprised that her opponent was so powerful. She has to get a message to Touta as Sayoko begins pondering how deep to bury Karin since she’s immortal.

Touta and Santa are in a graveyard and discussing the murders. Santa gives his frank opinion on how those born with magical talent or with money to buy magic apps do all kinds of despicable things.  Ikkuu and Kuroumaru arrive as Kuroumaru shouts for Touta to get away from Santa as he’s dangerous. Kuroumaru also reports that they’ve lost communication with Karin and Santa is the suspect.

Seeing his cover blown, Santa decides to end this friendship charade and puts up his hoodie. Touta is confused as he sees Santa looking like the guy they fought the other day. Even with Santa confirming this, Touta still refuses to believe it. Touta dodges Santa’s attack as Kuroumaru uses the Zanmaken Ni no Tachi attack on Santa, but Touta moves to block it. As a result, Touta takes a hit, and Santa loses his arm. Santa screams in apparent pain over losing the arm as Kuroumaru tells Touta that Santa isn’t human nor immortal, but he’s dead.

Above in the distance, a normal looking Sayoko observes everything.

Thoughts/Review:

Aren’t the undead immortal by definition? Assuming Santa is truly a revenant, then he should stay alive in an undead sort of way.  Touta and Eva are also in that category, which is why Kuroumaru was out to slay Eva when she and Touta first encountered Kuroumaru.

I’m still disappointed with Karin. This chapter reminds us of her gifts as a warrior, but twice in this chapter, she thought she’d won and she’d done nothing of the sort. I realizes that ultimately, this is to remove the most powerful piece from the board (much as keeping Eva back at UQH keeps the Queen off the board), but it just shows that Karin gets way too overconfident.  What was worse is that after being beaten, she wants to get word to Touta.

Santa’s line about Touta’s stupidity made me laugh. In this chapter, Touta is so stupid, he couldn’t outwit a squashed apricot. When the bleeding obvious facts don’t meet Touta’s beliefs, he refuses to accept said facts. I predict that Touta’s attempts to save Santa will ultimately result in Santa truly befriending Touta.

UQ Holder Chapter 50

I find it interesting that Santa addressed Touta as “Touta-niichan.” Should Santa join UQH as we all expect, I figure Santa will continue to address Touta in this manner and that despite himself, Santa will hang out with Touta.

Regarding Sayoko, why is she suddenly running out of time? Why did she appear to fritz, as if being affected by interference? It is almost as if Sayoko is a reality module. (I had previously wondered if Santa might be that, and he still might be.)  Did she bury Karin? (I think she did.)  She had to be a mage at some point in order to learn powerful magics, unless she is a reality module who’s been programmed with magic spells.

UQ Holder Chapter 50

Anyway, I figure that in all this chaos, Santa will discover his grave, which will cause him problems and ultimately lead to him coming around. As to Sayoko, we’ll see.  Otherwise, I’m looking forward to the new chapter next week.

  1. […] Here is a SPOILER image for the upcoming UQ Holder chapter 50, courtesy of Manga Kansou. (My review of UQ Holder chapter 50 should come out Wednesday.) […]

  2. Magine says:

Well, now that I saw this chapter, Touta is a very innocent or he needs glasses, he didn’t realize that Santa is the same person that the murderer that he saw the other night

I didn’t know that the weakness of Karin are psychological attacks… Did really Sayoko bury Karin 1000 meters? o_O

Maybe there are two Sayoko, one of those Sayoko is with Karin now and the another Sayoko is observing Touta and the others (I find it hard to think that Karin is buried) if so… Will someone go save to her?

Maybe Santa will fight with Sayoko in the end, he has more possiblity to be a ghost as Sayoko, considering that Sayoko is be able to use magic and Karin wasn’t able to win her.

    • Aki says:

It makes sense, her body virtually invulnerable to anything so since her body cannot be violated…. The best cause of action is to strike the mind.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, mental attacks do make sense. In that vein, knowing she has a weakness, Karin should go in assuming the worst every time.

It is more of a case that when Touta makes up his mind, that’s the way it is and that’s it. So when the actual facts challenge his belief, he refuses to believe it no matter how much evidence is presented. So when Santa says, “That was me,” Touta is just to thick skulled to accept that as the truth.

I didn’t know that the weakness of Karin are psychological attacks… Did really Sayoko bury Karin 1000 meters? o_O

Yeah, that is a new one. As to Sayoko burying Karin, she would be a fool not to put Karin completely out of action.

Maybe there are two Sayoko, one of those Sayoko is with Karin now and the another Sayoko is observing Touta and the others (I find it hard to think that Karin is buried) if so… Will someone go save to her?

I think there’s only one Sayoko. After all is said and done, I’m sure that they’ll find and extract Karin.

      Anyway, we’ll see what happens.

  3. chaosprophet says:

In some Japanese stories (starting with Tsukihime, I think?), they did introduce a different kind of Vampire that in many stories aren’t classified as undead (they don’t have the kind of rotting body that only gets a normal appearance by drinking blood periodically, and other undead like characteristics). The Shinso vampires in Negima seems to be the same.

I would need to check the raw to see the actual terms used, but maybe the difference here is that undead in general can be easily destroyed so wouldn’t be on the class of immortal from the numbers.

Very fun chapter, imo. Sayoko is really cool. And things get even more confusing about what is true and what isn’t.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

When Eva was first introduced, there was more of an emphasis on her being a vampire and needing blood, less to stay alive and more to have power and strength. That element slowly faded away and then Eva just eats and drinks as a normal person.

With UQ Holder, other than how Touta became a vampire and the fact that Kuroumaru couldn’t see his reflection, the vampire element is not even mentioned, which is kind of disappointing.

I’m looking forward to seeing more revealed about Sayoko.

      • chaosprophet says:

Touta himself jokes about not having the vampires weakness like the sun, which makes me think the is actually a reason and not just something Akamatsu forgets. One theory comes from him having ME, is that he actually is a mix of a vampire and something related with ME so that makes he not have the vampire weaknesses/elements.

  4. Things i see in this chapter :
    1. Karin is holy mage (like in the time she strike Chao)
    2. Sayoko might be eastern summoner (what was their name again ?) she could summon hands , dragon skill and her own hair
-> the body that Santa has might be not his own
    3. no panty Karin
    4. Restroom fighter Karin
    5. I think Karin is not so smart after all , she alway acts cool and such but whole story proved that Karin is pretty baka
    6. Team Karin is banished away …. again

  5. Nick.S says:

Though I must admit it does kind of make sense that Karins’ biggest weakness is ‘overreliance on her immortality’

Plus ‘vulnberable to teleportation or restraining’ attacks at least stop her from being a bit broken.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I don’t mind Karin having vulnerabilities. I just wish making snap decisions and false conclusions weren’t it. But, I guess that’s what Eva saw when she wanted to pair her off with Touta.

  6. chaosprophet says:

Spoilers on 2ch are out. As usual they”re confusing and not confirmed. But what I can understand is that Sayoko is a necromancer who turned Santa in a revenant, and Kirie comes.
