Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Aya, Kaname, Ginga, Kyuuma, and Tsukasa wait in the lobby of the bathhouse. Aurora shows up and gives two options to get to the camp grounds the first is to go all the way by car. The second is to take the car to the base of the mountain, then hike to the camp. Tsukasa wants to go by car, but Aya and Nasa want to hike. That causes her to reluctantly agree to hike.

Since Kaname has some work to do, she’s  going by car. Everyone else is doing the hiking option. Aya has difficulties, so Tsukasa instructs her on how to properly walk up the mountain. Ginga notices that Kyuuma has been left behind, so Tsukasa nimbly goes back to get her. Tsukasa teaches the idiot Kyuuma about the various plants Kyuuma points out. She takes Kyuuma up the mountain without using the path. This causes them to arrive at a point on the path before Nasa and company arrive.

Nasa is amazed that Tsukasa managed to pass them so quickly. She teases that mountain climbing is a basic ninja skill. However, she still hates hiking. Tsukasa’s explanation causes Nasa to call her a tsundere.

And so we come to the great outdoors camping portion of this manga series in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 97. And a fun beginning it was.

Hiking Hilarity

Tsukasa has never been a fan of this camping excursion. She’s only going because of Nasa. So when it came to getting an option to take a car to the camp site, or to hike to the camp site, she was clearly going for the car option. As she would state later in the chapter, humanity invented cars and such. However, the most humorous part about Tsukasa’s reluctance was that she was so good at it. More on that in a bit.

Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 97

Kyuuma is the Fumi of Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 97. As such, her blind stupidity was humorous, though not quite on the level of Fumi-chan (Hayate the Combat Butler). Tsukasa may have called her an idiot, but she was pretty patient. And she taught her a lot about plants and hiking. More on that in a bit.

I half expected to see a bear on the mountain. After all, during the hiking story in Hayate the Combat Butler, there was one. I’m not saying the bear would have been the focus, but maybe showing a bear scampering off in the background would be fun. We’ll see if Hata-sensei has them still hiking in the next chapter.

As has happened in other chapters, Hata-sensei uses Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 97 to tease more about Tsukasa being immortal. The first came when she was teaching Aya how to properly climb up the mountain path. Tsukasa mentioned how Japanese people walked a lot before the Meiji Era. She did this in a way that can be taken that she experienced this first hand.

Later, she also jokes about her deftness at mountain climbing being due to her having Ninja skills. But considering how well she held that old katana, it wouldn’t surprise me if she was a Ninja.

Next, Tsukasa has incredible knowledge of plants. Further, she knew exactly how to use one kind of plant as a medicine. That kind of knowledge could be from a book, but when taken with all of the other hints, it points to her having this knowledge from actual experience in the past.

Finally, as she helped Kyuuma quickly scale the mountain to get in front of Nasa and company, Tsukasa mentions that the things Kyuuma finds exiting are things Tsukasa finds boring.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Let me wrap up my review of Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 97 with some final thoughts.

  • I wonder if Hata-sensei has a story reason to keep Kaname out of the hiking part of the story. It could be due to having so many characters to keep track of.
  • There were some fun little Hayate the Combat Butler character cameos in Aurora’s travel visual. The first had Nagi’s cat Shiranui as well as the whacked, “nursing robot” Eight. The second featured the tiger Tama and the eye symbol thing that was so prevalent in Hayate the Combat Butler.

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 97 was a fun chapter with some more hints about Tsukasa being an immortal. I’m looking forward to reading more of this story-arc.
