Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Aya announces to Kaname and Tsukasa that she wants drain a pond. She was influence after watching a show where a pond was drained to reveal stuff on the bottom. However, since they have no pond on the property, Aya decides they need to make one. As such, she decides to consult with Nasa on accomplishing this. Although Nasa doesn’t understand Aya’s desire to drain a pond, he agrees to help make one.

Tsukasa comes home to find Nasa researching how to make a pond. He makes one last check to verify it is OK to actually dig the pond. After receiving confirmation, Nasa starts to dig, only to discover it isn’t as easy as he thought. Tsukasa volunteers to do it, but Nasa rejects this and does more research.

After a while of digging, Tsukasa provides some iced tea for Nasa. She tells him he looked wild and cool, which encouraged him to keep digging.

Thoughts/Review:

Hahaha! As I predicted, Hata-sensei took a massive step back from plot in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 121.

Plot? What plot?

As I stated in the previous chapter review, “…based on previous Hata-sensei stuff, plot may be put back on the shelf for a while.” And that turned out to be the case in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 121. So what better character to help make a 180º turn from plot than have Aya want to do something absurd, like drain water out of a pond.

The most humorous part to me was the fact that while Tsukasa found Aya’s desire to be stupid, she was keen to watch Nasa actually dig a pond. And she even volunteered to do it after Nasa initially failed at digging, which cracked me up. There’s an absurdity in that on a different level.

Still, Hata-sensei didn’t totally shuck the plot. Tsukasa mentioned waterproofing methods from the Kamakura Era and the Edo Era. But Nasa didn’t even flinch at this. Likely, Hata-sensei did this to prevent a “fluff” chapter from being derailed.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 121 saw a return to the lighthearted stories Hata-sensei prefers. But while the plot was avoided, it wasn’t 100% avoided.
