Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

In the 1940s, Tsukasa takes in the child Tokiko, deciding to raise her to be happy as Umayado had done many centuries before. In the 1950s, Tokiko is a teenager at Tsukasa’s country home. Tokiko muses on the the conflict between the Soviet block and the Western alliance. She further speculates on an upcoming space race to reach the moon. And to do this, they’ll not only need rockets, but also powerful, mainframe computers.

Tokiko points to an article about the the IBM 701 mainframe. She states it isn’t powerful enough, but she believes IBM will soon create a more powerful mainframe. As such, she informs Tsukasa that they need to buy as much IBM stock as possible. Tsukasa wants to know exactly how much stock Tokiko wants them to buy. Tokiko informs her that they need enough to participate in the shareholder meetings.

Tokiko’s plan is to study hard, travel to America, and develop the more powerful mainframe for IBM. Thus, Tokiko can help get Tsukasa to the moon. Eventually, Tsukasa gives into pressure from Tokiko and calls President Eisenhower to arrange for her and Tokiko to come to America. When they arrive, Tokiko is very excited and cannot understand why Tsukasa isn’t. Tsukasa says she’s been to America before it was known as America.

In 1969, Tokiko’s hard work paid off with American landing people on the moon.

Thoughts/Review:

Hata-sensei continues to delight me by giving us more of Tsukasa’s history in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 154.

Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 154

Tokiko and Tsukasa

I really hope that Nasa ends up being the reincarnation of Umayado, because Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 154 gave us a glimpse of how much he influenced her life over the centuries. And hopefully, we can get more about Tsukasa’s time with Umayado.

That aside, I got a kick out of how simple Tsukasa’s goals were when it came to raising Tokiko. She just wanted to make Tokiko happy and give her watermelon. In that light, it is humorous to me how Tsukasa’s simplicity meant that she really didn’t understand Tokiko’s passion or her vision of the future. For Tsukasa, the little girl was now a teen, and she wanted to keep giving her lovely watermelon and make her happy.

To that end, Tsukasa apparently ends up buying a lot of IBM stock. (I wonder if she still has it, or if it was all given to Tokiko, explaining the large mansion Tokiko lived in at the end of her life.) Not only that, she ends up calling “Ike” (President Eisenhower) to arrange for them to immigrate to America. And it was done to make Tokiko happy.
