Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

During World War II, Tsukasa saves Tokiko during a bombing attack. Tokiko believes Tsukasa is dead, but witnesses the mangled Tsukasa come back to life.

Back in the near past, the elderly Tokiko scolds Tsukasa for letting Chitose see her gruesome fall off the cliff. Chitose gets over her shock at learning of Tsukasa’s immortality. Now Chitose’s excited since technically, Tsukasa as saved her twice, starting with her (great) grandmother Tokiko. Since it is late, they let Shiori know that Chitose is spending the night at Tsukasa’s place.

Tsukasa observes the sleeping Chitose and remarks to Tokiko how much Chitose reminds her of Tokiko. Tokiko denies having acted all admiring like Chitose and goes to bed. The next morning, Chitose firmly tells Tsukasa that she needs to live with them in the city. Chitose wants Tokiko to set Chitose straight, but Tokkiko agrees with Chitose.

In the present, Tsukasa tells Nasa that she noticed Tokiko’s failing health and realized Tokiko wouldn’t live much longer. So she agreed to move into Tokiko’s mansion. Tsukasa explains Tokiko secured the moon rock in order to do research, which turned out fruitless. Shortly after, Tsukasa met Nasa, then spent two more years with Tokiko.

With that, Tsukasa decides to pay her respects to Tokiko.

Thoughts/Review:

Although abbreviated, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 157 appears to wrap up the flashback of how Tsukasa met Tokiko and Chitose.

Chitose’s Sister Complex

I know I’ve said this before, but I’m really loving the back history Hata-sensei is providing us. While this appears to be wrapping up in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 157, there’s still plenty more Sensei could do in the future.

That aside, Chitose’s cliched sister complex makes complete sense now. Too often in anime an manga, the siscon character is just obsessed with their older sister (whether they are actually related or not) ’cause “reasons”. For Chitose, Tsukasa saving her life was a big deal. Even further, Chitose witnessed Tsukasa apparently fall to her death and have a broken body. Yet Tsukasa lives, unharmed. So it is understandable that Chitose would be so enamored of Tsukasa and idolize her.

I never disliked Chitose, even with her siscon trope personality. But knowing her back history and why she has it makes Chitose’s character more understandable.

Tokiko Dying

I don’t know if Hata-sensei will show us other aspects of Tsukasa’s life as she roamed the globe over a 1400+ year span. But in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 157, Tsukasa is reminded of mortality as she realizes Tokiko will soon die. As I read things, when Nasa and Tsukasa met, she was on her way to Tokiko’s place. And the real reason she left Nasa alone for two years was to spend time with Tokiko before she died.

But then Tokiko insisted Tsukasa find her happiness (with Nasa). I would love for Hata-sensei to give us a flashback where Tsukasa talks about saving Nasa and how he met her fairy tail destiny requirement. That could be a lot of fun to read.

That aside, I am glad that at the end of the chapter, Tsukasa decided to pay her respects to Tokiko. Tsukasa seems to have some regrets that Tokiko devoted her life to a seemingly hopeless cause.

Final Thoughts and Conlcusion

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 157 is another lovely flashback chapter that wraps up Tsukasa telling her history with Tokiko and Chitose to Nasa.
