Spy×Family 19
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis
Anya’s class are sweeping the courtyard. Damian makes a big spectacle and gets praised from other classmates. Anya “hears” fellow classmate George’s angry thoughts towards Damian. George blames Damian’s family for destroying George’s father’s company. As such, George attempts to manufacture an incident to get Damian expelled, but Anya intervenes and defends Damian.
Damian gets mad and demands George come clean. George states that because Damian’s father’s business crushed George’s father’s business, George will now have to leave Eden College. Damian feels bad for him and offers George a juice, which George accepts. George then laments not eating a caviar rice bowl, so his classmates buy him that.
As the day ends, the class gives George farewell presents. George comes home, only to learn that Damian’s father bought their family business, and his father continues to have a job. The next day at school, an embarrassed George deals with the stares. Damian requests George repay him for the juice. Becky insists that George return the presents.
Sometime later, Anya goes to school. Yor sees Anya’s PE outfit in her room and assumes Anya forgot it. As such, she goes to great lengths to infiltrate Eden. This is observed by Twilight. Anya senses Yor’s presence and finds her. Yor learns that Anya didn’t have PE today, thus had no need for the uniform. A depressed Yor starts returning home, so Twilight intercepts her and takes her to lunch.
Thoughts/Review
We get a resolution to the plot of who wanted Damian’s test sabotaged in Spy×Family 19. That story was faithfully adapted from manga chapter 28. The rest of the anime seems to be anime original, unless it came from a volume not yet released in the West.
Resentful George
The first 2/3 of Spy×Family 19 dealt with George and his angry resentment of Damian over George misunderstanding his father’s business situation. We learn that he was the one who had his elderly butler hire the incompetent spy to sabotage Damian.
The fun parts of this story were Anya’s reactions to things. There was the moment she defended Damian from George’s fresh attempt to get Damian expelled.
Then later when the class felt sorry for George, who felt he would be sold to the West into slavery, Anya is all, “It’ll be fine” (because her adoptive father is from there). And yet later as the rest of the class does things for him, Anya is unimpressed. She doesn’t join in the song and she give George a leaf as a goodbye present. 😂
It was also fun observing Becky’s reactions what she felt was Anya’s infatuation with Damian. Of course Becky is no where near the mark, and Anya has no interest in those sorts of things.
Yor’s Adventure
The “you forgot something, so I better deliver it to you STAT” is an old trope in anime and manga. Usually, it is a bento that is forgotten. However, in Spy×Family 19, it is a misunderstanding over a supposedly forgotten PE outfit. While it was fun seeing Yor race through town like Spider-man (almost), the story did feel somewhat out of place to me. All it does is showcase Yor’s incredible skills while showing how dumb she is. I don’t like her having this dumb side.
I’m glad the writers didn’t run with the “just missed each other” gag for too long. Once Anya sensed Yor’s presence, she would have easily found her adoptive mother.
Still, this side story did allow Twilight to reassure Yor and take her to lunch, which was nice.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Spy×Family 19 is fine for what it is. We get to see more of Anya’s school life, which is nice. And we get to see Yor in action, which is nice, but felt out of place.
