Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 121 Manga Review
フェアリーテイル 100年クエスト
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
After teasing Suzaku to leave, Irene introduces herself to Selene. She informs Selene that her surname Belserion came from the sage dragon. After Irene states that the name Belserion appears in ancient human texts as connected to the first dragon slayer, Selene realizes Irene is the mother of said magic.
Upon learning that Irene has a symbiotic relationship with Wendy, Selene expresses relief. She had thought Wendy might be possessed by an imp, considering how much magic she had. This amuses Irene, who then tells Selene that Selene will be needed in the days to come. Since Irene came from a world were humans and dragons lived together, she knows Selene will be needed in the future.
Irene takes the curse of the dragon’s wound upon herself, causing Wendy temporary pain. After disengaging from Wendy, Irene request Selene gate her to another world. In order to spare Wendy from the consequences of hosting Irene, Irene wants to truly die. Further, Irene wants to do this for Erza’s sake. Selene gates Irene’s spirit to a world where she cannot use her enchantments and thus cause someone else’s death.
Meanwhile in Edolas, Erza Knightwalker gives birth to a daughter, whom she and her husband Mystogan name Irene.
Thoughts/Review:
We get a surprisingly sentimental chapter in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 121. I suppose Mashima-sensei decided Irene had overstayed her welcome as a deus ex machina for Wendy. Unlike other cameo characters who’ve come and gone in the manga, Irene had been around for quite some time. So in some regards, I’m kinda surprised that Mashima-sensei decided to off her.
At the same time, Mashima-sensei had written Selene’s story such a way so that she was going to die or have some arse-pull to keep her alive. I pretty much gave up trying to figure out what Mashima-sensei would do. After the last chapter, my guess was Irene would simply shift to Selene. I didn’t expect Irene to want to have the last vestiges of herself killed.
Still, how does Selene explain her magical recovery to the others? Only Wendy knows about Irene. Further, Irene didn’t want Erza to know about her presence. I’m sure Mashima-sensei will come up with some sort of arse-pull to explain things away.
Regardless, I have to admit that it was touching seeing Irene apparently reborn as an infant on Edolas to the Erza of that world.
