Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 135 Manga Review
フェアリーテイル 100年クエスト
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Lucy appeals to Athena, citing a desire to be friends. She points out that they both have goals where they can help each other. Further, Lucy mentions her belief that Gold Owl wants Athena to absorb dragon energy to draw out her dragon god slaying powers. Lucy continues, pointing out that Athena does have emotions, including confusion, which Athena is feeling at the moment. As such, Lucy asks Athena to think and decide for herself.
Elsewhere, furry Erza, Jellal, and Minerva flee from Luso (Lusso), who fires arrows at them. They spot and exit and flee, returning to form. Minerva quickly teleports them away. An annoyed Luso confronts her older twin sister Eni (Ennie), since Eni created the escape. Eni said Luso’s antics became tedious. Since there were no dragon mages in the party, she lost interest in them. Luso protests, but an irritated response from Eni shuts her down.
Over at Gold Owl. Wendy and Rogue are down, leaving Gray as their only defense. Duke explains that the reason they didn’t go after Diabolos is that their dragon powers are polluted, since they consume dragon flesh. Before Duke can finish off all of them, Athena arrives with Lucy, Yukino, Natsu, and Sting. Athena happily proclaims she has emotions, thus doesn’t need the magical energy. Duke summons the happy Athena forward, where he then puts his hand through her torso.
Thoughts/Review:
Nakama Power is when the power of friendship allows one to overcome any odds. In Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 135, we get Nakama Power 2.0. This is when the power of friendship is extended to an enemy and they change sides. I had not predicted this element as part of Lucy’s strategy. In the previous chapter, she and Yukino did everything I expected, only they didn’t win the day. As such, Lucy says, “You’ve already got the emotions you seek. Let’s be friends!” Apparently that was enough to win the day. 😅
For Minerva, Erza, and Jellal, the only way I saw for them to get out of their fight alive was to have some sort of interruption. Here too, I didn’t expect for Eni to go, “Yeah, I’m bored, tormenting them is tedious, so I’m ending this.” That begs the question, “Why’d the sisters attack at all?” More on that in a bit.
And finally, the converted Athena prevents Duke from killing Sting, Natsu, and Gray. Once again, I didn’t expect for Duke to basically critically damage his creation in response. I expect Nakama Power 3.0 to go into effect next chapter, whereby Natsu is so offended by friendship betrayal, he goes Super Saiyan on Duke and the others.
Still, I think it is clear that Mashima-sensei wanted to do a bit of pointless action. Otherwise, there’s no reason for Eni and Luso to do jack to Erza’s party. The fact that he just had to have them abruptly end the fight says a lot. That also goes for the battle with Athena. Initially, it looked cool, but then once everyone got to fight, it was time for the nakama “everything’s just fine” routine to begin. To me, it isn’t a satisfactory resolution.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
In the end, Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest Chapter 135 goes to show that pretty much all of the action of the last 2-3 chapters has been for fan service and not for any actual plot reason. 🤷♂️
