Since the Community Anime Reviews site has periodic down periods, I’m republishing some of my OG reviews from there. I have corrected obvious spelling errors though. I will add new notes in parenthesis, labeled “ANB  note.”  😅 I won’t count these as part of the “Back to the Vaults” series as I have not rewatched them.

Mahoromatic Something More Beautiful

More Ecchi

Man, I guess Gainax thought Mahoromatic wasn’t ecchi enough because they add more of said content in episode 1. And Shikijo-sensei is still lusting after underaged Suguru-san and other boys his age (and these are junior high school students). Suguru-san’s female classmates are all shown nude as well, so I guess the lolicon crowd should be pleased.

Still, the charm and humor of the original are here and that’s good. In fact, if it weren’t for the ecchi content, this would be a “buy” title for me. Mahoro-san is as charming as May was from Hand Maid May, though Mahoro’s experience make her more mature. While reviews at other places have complained about the “filler” episodes, I liked them. The main plot isn’t forgotten during these fillers, but the fun episodes are the slice-of-life episodes and seeing Mahoro-san experience Christmas, New Years, spring, etc. was such a joy for me. When Minawa-chan calls her “oneechan”, I laughed seeing Mahoro’s shiver of delight.

Speaking of Minawa-chan, her addition to the family was nice. Her ultra shy nature made her adorable and it was understandable why one of Sugura’s male classmates fell for her. Still, she kind of gets dropped toward the end. We do get to see her in episode 13 and know she’s doing well, but I would have liked her to have been a part of episode 14 too. But that’s a minor issue.

What I Didn’t Like

There were problems for me beyond the ecchi factor. “Management” (I’m not sure about that translation, but it is the one Pioneer used so…) left me puzzled. I mean, what exactly was their purpose in the war between Saint and Vesper? Then there was the Saint character who’s introduced late — Leesha. She’s not explored very much and her reason for showing up seemed to be to give a twist to the Saint/Vesper conflict. The revelation of Matthew left me scratching my head too.

The final episode is PURE Gainax though, but not a mind smeg like EVA was. To be honest, I would have liked there to have been more episodes that take place during this time, which happens many years after episode 13 and has Sagura as an adult. It would have been neat to actually see the various characters as adults. We get to see one character, and her arrival is explained, but her final remark actually suggests she’s something more that we thought. So that left a question in addition to other questions I had as the story attempted to wrap things up. Still, it was a good episode.

Bottom line:

Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful is too ecchi for me to own, but if you don’t mind that, this is a really good title with a lot of laughs, a lot of story, and a lot of fun.
