FUNimation Stops Slayers REVOLUTION Fansubs

Since I’m receiving so many hits based on “Slayers REVOLUTION fansubs” and “Slayers REVOLUTION translation scripts,” I thought I better post something useful for you guys.

On behalf of Enoki Films, Ltd. (Enoki Films USA Inc. has the license to Slayers REVOLUTION, as well as Slayers, Slayers Next, and Slayers Try), FUNimation has issued cease and desist letters to fansub groups to stop fansubbing Slayers REVOLUTION. As far as I can tell, the groups that were subbing the series are complying with the request.

Now, for those looking for translation scripts, don’t ask me because I don’t know of any. In fact, should such scripts be put out for public consumption, you can bet that FUNimation’s legal department will have them removed fairly quickly. After all, translation scripts can easily be turned into new fansubs that neither Enoki Films nor FUNimation want.

As to the question of whether this means that FUNimation has been given the rights to translated, market, and distribute Slayers REVOLUTION, the official answer is no. FUNimation did acquire the rights for the first three TV series (which I’ve already commented on) and I wouldn’t be surprised if FUNimation ends up announcing that they’ll be doing all of the work on bringing this 4th Slayers TV series to the U.S. (which I honestly hope happens since the subtitles this time will be done in-house). Indeed, FUNimation’s track record for licensing titles they’ve sent C&D letters out on is a very high percentage (I want to say 100% but I haven’t bothered to check for sure).

So for all the fansub watchers, it is going to be tough to be unable to watch the new episodes. I’m sure that if a licensing announcement isn’t made pretty soon, it is going to become frustrating for fans, especially since some titles take ages from their announcement until they are finally released on DVD. All I can say is, “hang in there.”

    What a friggin shakedown

They’d have found a way even if they weren’t asked

If they wanted to be fair on this Slayers would air on american tv or on a legal internet tv site subbed accurately and without censorship
with only a slight space in between american and japanese viewings

But that can’t work, there’s money to be made

Actually, I find it interesting that FUNimation hasn’t stopped certain fansubs for stuff they have. The titles that make big news are titles that FUNimation doesn’t have a license for but for which they’ve been asked by the Japanese to shut down the fansubs. Otherwise, FUNimation has no legal authority to do anything about a fansub they don’t have a license for.

To be honest, the people I don’t trust here is Enoki Films. I don’t have ANY proof, but I can’t shake the feeling that they were the ones that hosed up FUNimation’s plans for the original 3 “Slayers” TV series. Even if that is the case, I can see FUNimation looking at the hotness of the title and wanting it, to which Enoki Films says, “You want this? Kill all fansubs for us.” Since there is money to be made, FUNimation complies upon being given a Power of Attorney.

As to you concern over the release time from Japan to here, that’s very valid and Gen (the head of FUNimation) has stated that they’d like very much to start doing this kind of thing. However, there are issues in bringing this to pass, one of them being a reluctance on the part of many Japanese companies to do such a thing.

I too am disappointed that the fansubs are gone. However, I’ve gone through this quite a few times in the past where fansub groups wouldn’t even receive a C&D notice and would drop a title on the mere hint that it might be licensed. As such, I guess I’m just numb to it now.

It’s impossible to stop fansubs. Sure they scare the ones hosted in USA, but they don’t have control of the world, heck, their license rarely crosses USA borders, so why should we (living outside) care?

I will gladly host any scripts or fansub for groups who continue the work. I know VivaLaRevolution made ep7, let’s hope this continues. Remember, if you live in an oppressed country, you can always release using a secure method such as TOR, PerfectDark or Share.

What happened to VivaLaRevolution? Did they stop or did they change their name? I don’t see any new fansub after 7.

  7. TX07TL says:

VivaLaRevolution are still doing fansubs. Episode 9 is out.

Hurah for VivaLaRevolution! Long live the fansubs!

  9. Lena says:

So that’s what happened. I was beginning to wonder why it has become so hard to find new subbed episodes of Slayers Revolution. No matter what licensing companies do, it’s difficult to shut down every single fansub group under their ‘jurisdiction’.

Anyhow, VivaLaRevolution is still going strong and are fansubbing the episodes steadily. Until today, I’ve been watching the RAWs, and for a non-native Japanese speaker, it has been somewhat of a challenge. I can understand one half, but can’t understand the other half.

So, if anyone from VivaLaRevolution is reading this, I thank you for continuing to sub Slayers Revolution!

If Funimation is stopping fansubs, why’s VivaLaRevolution still able to function?

  12. AstroNerdBoy says:

I accidentally deleted Viva 1’s response (sorry about that). So here’s what he/she said.

“FUNmation only gave the C&D to Static. No else got one. Everyone else just stopped subbing on their own.

“Besides, Viva works because we are a secret.”

Thanks to Viva 1 for the info and for the episodes.

    I have no affiliation with VivaLaRevolution Fansubs so I do not know. Unless one of them post an update here, I guess you’ll just have to hunt online like most others. ^_^;

  19. AstroNerdBoy says:

I don’t have that file so I can’t help. Sorry.
