FUNimation Has "Ikki Tousen"

As announced by FUNimation, they now officially have the very ecchi high school fighting anime Ikki Tousen (FUNimation’s official Ikki Tousen site). Geneon previously had the title and while FUNimation has distributed stuff for Geneon before, that’s not the case here. Instead, FUNimation has the Geneon portion of the license, meaning Geneon is out of the loop here. I suspect that’s because of Enoki Films officially having the distribution part in the U.S., which is their official role for Slayers, Slayers NEXT and Slayers TRY. As such, there’s no room for Geneon since Enoki Films’ parent company in Japan is the entity from which the U.S. license originates.

I expect that as has happened with other FUNimation license rescues, this will be Geneon’s work repackaged with a FUNimation label slapped on it. Whether this means FUNimation will be interested in Ikki Tousen: Dragon Destiny and Ikki Tousen: Great Guardians will likely depend on sales and the deal FUNimation could get from Enoki Films.

This series has an interesting premise for me (a take on the Three Kingdoms story), but the extreme ecchi content (as seen in the poster image above) is what killed it for me. I’m told that the sequels are even worse with the girls having clothing made of tissue-like substance that vanishes with a puff of air. *_*

So, congrats to those who figured that clue out. ^_^

I’m pretty disappointed with this. Of all the shows to rescue from Geneon, such as Hellsing Ultimate, why this?

I’d be interested in knowing this as well. Clearly, someone at FUNimation thinks it will make them money somehow someway but I don’t see it, even with licensing the sequel titles.

There are certain legal requirment for a ‘rescue’ under US copyright laws. Amoung them is the age of the rights, when the US copyright was granted, and if the US publisher is going to use it rights. Remember that the reason why “rescue” exist is to allow arthor, film makers, and artist to make money form there efforts if a their publisher does not produce their works.
