Space Battleship Yamato 2199 Extended Trailer – Color Me Excited!

宇宙戦艦ヤマト2199/Space Battleship Yamato 2199

Amazon Japan released an extended trailer for the forthcoming Space Battleship Yamato 2199 release.  This reboot of the TV series is launching via theaters in Japan on April 7, 2012.  The “movie” will actually be the first two episodes of the new TV series, which are apparently to be edited in such a way for theater consumption, after which, the movie will come out on DVD/BD.

(Update: I had a  video here, but it was wiped in the move from Blogger.)

As someone who liked the original Space Battleship Yamato (not the American rewrite known as Star Blazers), I am excited to see this reboot of the franchise.  For starters, it allows the writers to tighten things up a bit story-wise, removing some of that 70’s cheese that often crept up in the original TV series.  Further to that, it appears that Yuki won’t be the only female on ship, as Sato-sensei appears to have another female nurse.

In the original series, Yuki was the only chick on board, and so her jobs ranged from being a nurse, to a serving wench, to a bridge officer, to a pilot, to whatever other role needed filling.  That was one of the more annoying aspects of the original TV series.  There was even an episode where she’s on the bridge in whatever role she played there while at the same time, being a nurse in the infirmary.  I don’t know what Matsumoto-sensei had against female characters, but he tended to have them cloned (the other two women in the original series looked like Yuki as well), and not many of them to boot.

Anyway, the clip of the reboot looks pretty good.  I like how they are honoring the original series by keeping the warship designs pretty much the same, yet at the same time, taking advantage of modern CGI technology to make things look cool.

The plan is to blog this series when it comes out on TV in Japan.

I always figured that they cut out the female crew members to cut down on time, since a few time it came down to them driving the episode to the station right before the time slot. There were only one or two character models for red shirts on Yamato so removing the females would probably make it easier to finish a cut.

Dude! ^_^ No one seems to have shared this yet, so here’s Kajishima’s message from the last page of the 11.12 Onsen.

Well then, I had to rush this a bit, but for now the chapter on pilot suit explanations is closed. Painting everything is a lot of work, but it’s been fun to draw these, so maybe I’ll try some more styles at some point. There’s probably quite a bit still left unexplained anyway…
Next time the topic will be “Parents’ Visiting Day”. I want to cover things like Chiaia’s and Wahanly’s mothers, who never made an appearance. Hence, Mexiah (will be presenting the story).

In terms of work, it’s definite that the novel will be out in January 2012 and I’ll have an illustration in Dragon Magazine at the same time. Since I managed to conclude the whole runaway Fuku-chan thing, I can now take the plunge into the Earth chapter. ……Here’s hoping I can finish that in a single volume. Everything else is still sort of in the pipeline. See you in the summer!

Damn, he made it sound like something new was imminent last time but now it’s back to the usual vagueness again.

What is this? a Seikishi novel? It better tie things off. that series was left in a mess, and as per usual with Kajishima it came so close to perfection.

In other news i have a blog myself now. similar anime and manga stuff though not as often as ANB. Im mostly going to be posting anime songs.

@Anon – Thanks for the info. I’ll get this on the FAQ in a few days. ^_^

@Lan — Thanks for the head’s up on your blog. ^_^

He must be talking about the latest GXP volume that came out in January.

Am not really into this type of animes, when they bring something back the usually ruin this, do you guys think its worth watching?

If you are referring to Space Battleship Yamato, then I think in this case, the answer will be “yes.” Obviously, we’ll have to wait and see on what the final product is, but I think of how Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is for the most part, so much better than the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime.

To remind you the first FMA wasn’t very popular since it greatly deviated from the manga. And the story wasn’t nearly as good as the manga.

The FMA:Br was adaptation of the manga almost to the last letter. The deviations were rather small and probably many have already forgotten about them. Although I agree with some of the changes and disagree with others (and probably many fans are like that), the series were a lot closer to the original source, hence they were liked a lot more.

Anyway, reboot in the anime world is a rare occurrence, but it exists. For instance, I believe “Towa no Quon” is a rather loose remake (reboot?) of an earlier series, but I can’t remember which. And it’s rather good. Another well made reboot is the two original movies “Ghost in the Shell” and the series.

On the other hand, the abomination called “Negima!?” (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=4565) is a very bad reboot (I even don’t know if this is considered as an attempt to reboot!).

Anyway, there are a few more cases, probably, but I can’t remember any. But I’m sure there are (and some are well done, some are not)!

P.S. Probably every anime version that deviates greatly from the source, be it manga or novel, or game, or whatever could be considered reboot in a way. Examples – plenty. We can even take the “Ghost in the Shell”, which I mentioned above – the movies are reboot from the manga with the same name.

P.P.S. ANB, have you watched “Ghost in the Shell”? Because if you didn’t, I seriously recommend it. It’s one of the anime which should be watched. Just like Death Note or FMA:Br… a classic. “Ghost in the Shell” even inspired “The Matrix”…

Yeah, “reboot” isn’t the right term. I think I’ve been using “remake.”

I haven’t seen it, though I am aware of it. Thanks for the recommendation.

So, no anime news. And I was hoping he’ll announce something. 🙁

Anyway, does anyone want to translate Tenchi related novel or two (or all)? Scanlations of the Onsens would be appreciated too!

    @ver animes:
Who knows. It’ll be different for sure. For the old fans it might be bad or they might like it, but for the new, who don’t know the story (or just heard of it) it all depends on the execution: if the anime is well made, they’ll like, if not – they’ll stop watching it.

Also, reboot isn’t always bad. A few examples: the new Battlestar Galactica, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holms (as well as the British series Sherlock), Nolan’s Batman, James Bond, Hawaii Five-0, the new Karate Kid with Jackie Chan and Will Smith’s son, Mortal Kombat (there is a movie in the making, which should be great if you compare to the recent indie short movie and mini-series), etc.

Here’s a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reboot_(fiction). I’m sure you could find at least a few more that are rather successful after the reboot. But for good or bad, it’s not always the case, so reboot is still a high risk endeavor – old fans rarely like reboots and new fans not always like the new product. But it’s often necessary to pour some new blood in an old and almost abandoned/forgotten universe, since the new people rarely go to old movies and series (I don’t know about the anime fans and the classic anime, though).

Considering how old the original Yamato is, I’m sure that a lot of younger anime fans, both in and out of Japan, won’t be interested in something so old.

You make a good point about Battlestar Galactica. I haven’t seen most of the other titles you mentioned, but the new Karate Kid was one I passed on since they removed Japan from it.

As to Mortal Kombat, I saw the first movie, which was OK as popcorn fare.

  7. evgenidb says:

The new Karate Kid is very good. At least compared to the old version which I barely remember.

As for Mortal Kombat – the first movie was rather good (which became a cult movie in a sense), the second not so great (not good at all actually), but the short movie and the mini-series (10 min. web series) are great. A reboot movie is in the works which would be a lot darker and more realistic. The new James Bond is also more realistic and serious take than the old movies.

For the short movie that started it all, ANB, I present you Mortal Kombat: Rebirth – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9YUeTTaVqo.

After that short mini-series were made called Mortal Kombat: Legacy – http://www.youtube.com/show?p=VkIoQKmEa4I&tracker=show_av (they are tie-ins to the latest MK game, but they are still pretty realistic looking).

About the movies I mentioned, I just brought the very best stuff of the reboots I’ve watched (and remembered). So, the new Batman movies are very good, especially the second one where the Joker appears, both Sherlock Holmes versions (Guy Ritchie’s is a totally new story with elements and characters brought from various works, while the British version is a modernization of the works, but otherwise stay rather close to them (or at least I think so, since I haven’t read a single story of Sherlock Holmes)). Hawaii Five-0 are really good series, but the series Burn Notice beats it fair and square in my opinion (it’s the highest rating TV series on its channel (USA Network), beating shows like Covert Affairs, Psych, White Collar, etc. and for a reason (but probably doesn’t beat the wrestling: WWE Raw, though)).

Anyway, find some spare time to watch them. You won’t regret it. 😉

P.S. And watch the anime Level-E as well. 😀

What? The original FOR EVER! ^_~ (Plus, it was actually about karate, not kung fu.)

Dude, I don’t mean to rush you but if you don’t put this translation up soon, a half-assed Google Translate version they talked about in the latest Tenchicast will get spread around instead.
