Urusei Yatsura Ep. 184 review

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Lum has a nightmare that Ataru is engaged to a young lady that his parents are very happy with.  Cherry shows up and tells her to head to the local shrine. At the same time, Ataru is on a girl hunt and failing until one girl agrees to go out with him for some amazake. One sip of this low-alcohol beverage has the girl drunk, and she takes her anger of men out on Ataru. Cherry suggests he visit the local shrine, but Ataru refuses until the girl’s continued beatings cause him to change his mind. Since Lum wants to go as well, the two go as a couple, where Cherry meets them at the shrine. They make their (opposite) prayers and then go for their omikuji, which predicts things neither wants to experience. So, they tie up their fortune slips and start to leave until Cherry suggests they head to Sakura’s omikuji place, at the end of a row of omikuji stalls.

At Sakura’s place, a crowd has gathered, so Sakura brings out Shinobu and Ran, who are her assistant miko. When Lum and Ataru draw their omikuji, they again do not like the results.  Leaving the area, a man in one of the stalls gets them to participate in his omikuji, but their joint fortune is one they don’t like. They find a card fortune reader, but again, Lum and Ataru don’t get the fortunes they want. Lum finds a tree with a subspace entrance, and inside subspace is another omikuji dealer. This time, Lum’s and Ataru’s fortunes come true instantly, with Ataru being forced to marry Lum. Ataru manages to get another fortune slip, which has him ill as Lum tends to him. Ataru manages to write a new fortune that leaves him ill, but tended by a harem. Lum fries him, and they exit subspace and the omikuji stalls, only to have Ataru walk through a bad luck gate.

Thoughts/Review:

The humor in this episode mostly came from the fact that both Lum and Ataru were getting true fortunes, but refused to accept the outcome of said fortune.

The biggest laugh for me came from Ataru not realizing subspace fortunes came true instantly, as he found himself going down the isle in a church with Lum and no escape, save to pay a large amount of money for a new fortune. *lol*

Beyond that, not a whole lot to say. The episode was entertaining for what it was worth, more so because the focus was on Ataru and Lum, with only a few supporting characters in limited use (Cherry, Sakura, Shinobu, Ran).
