Haiyore! Nyarlko-san – 05

這いよれ!ニャル子さん/Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05Hastur, Cthuko, Nyarlko, and Mahiro discuss Hastur’s father’s interest in Mahiro’s mother, Yoriko, leading Nyarlko to come up with a wild scenario in which Hastur and Mahiro are actually brothers, something Hastur would rather not have since he’s crushing on Mahiro. Outside of Mahiro’s home, Yoriko arrives with groceries when the green haired woman arrives and grabs her, taking her to the roof. She whispers something to Yoriko, who then agrees to go with the woman. However, Mahiro is not buying it and asks Nyarlko to rescue his mom. Nyarlko and Cthuko leap up to do battle, but the woman gets Cthuko to switch sides by whispering something to her. Cthuko erects a fire barrier, and they escape in the woman’s DeLorean.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05After Nyarlko enjoys a spot of tea and Hastur gets excited over being in Mahiro’s room, Nyarlko reveals that Cthuko is being tracked. She wonders what Yoriko could be hiding, when she and Mahiro decide it must be the mysterious Sononium she talks about when hugging her son. A call from her boss has Nyarlko promise to kill Cthuko, but they have to head back to R’lyeh Land, which is controlled by the Cthulhu Corporation. Since Dagon-kun is part of that, Nyarlko decides to go via another transport, and thus uses her monster ball to produce Nephren-Car, a true all terrain vehicle that can travel underwater as well.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05The trip to R’lyeh Land has them encounter small, underwater monsters called Deep Ones. Nyarlko unleashes Nephren-Car’s missiles, but then they bump into Dagon-kun as they approach R’lyeh Land. Nyarlko manages to elude him, but forgot about Dagon-kun’s wife, Hydra-chan, who attacks, causing Mahiro to be ejected from the car. Despite being deep under the sea and drowning, he awakens on the shores of R’lyeh Land, with a worried Hastur looking down on him and revealing that he’d preformed mouth-to-mouth on Mahiro, making it both of their first kiss after a fashion. Hastur confesses his love for Mahiro, so to not hurt the boy’s feelings, Mahiro says that if in 25-million years if Hastur has the same feelings, Mahiro will consider them. Hastur accepts this, and sniffs out where Nyarlko and Cthuko are.

Thoughts/Review:

The ecchi trap humor is REALLY starting to get creepy now. *_*  Nyarlko’s attempts to ride Mahiro are bad enough. Cthuko’s attempts to scissor Nyarlko are worse. Now, we have Hastur wanting to be jackhammered by Mahiro.  Seriously, what next?  Maybe some “hot” mother-son action called Sononium, eh? *_*

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

As a character, I don’t like Hastur, and not because of his sexual desires. He’s just a weedy kid who happens to have wind power and that’s it.  His weedy nature just grinds on me.  (As an aside, why is his name mostly being spelled as “Hasuta” instead of “Hastur?”  It can’t be because Cthuko and Nyarlko refer to him as “Hastur-kun,” since he refers to them as “Cthuko-chan” and “Nyarlko-chan.” The translator ignores the “-chan” honorific and doesn’t changed the names to “Kuuko” and “Nyaruko.” But I digress…)

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

As annoying as Cthuko is, she at least has a badarse aspect to her, as shown when she joined Nyarlko to rescue Yoriko, and when she turned on Nyarlko.  As such, it buys her some brownie points with me to deal with her more annoying “scissor-scissor” traits.

Even Nyarlko, who gets annoying at times, is a bloodthirsty badarse when she gets serious, which also buys her brownie points.  Hastur gets NONE!

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

The parodies continued, only this time, there were repeats.  For doubters last episode that the DeLorean used by the green haired woman was a nod to Back to the Future, the vehicle again shows up, flies the way Doc Brown’s car did, and even had the fire trail in the sky when it took off.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

Pokémon also gets another nod, this time with Nyarlko using a Monster Ball to summon her car.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

Nephren-Car is a pun on Nephren-Ka, the “Black Pharaoh” in the Lovecraft mythos, who worshiped Nyarlathotep.  Isn’t the Internet awesome? ^_~

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

The chocolate pipe that Nyarlko produced made me wonder if the Japanese weren’t poking fun at America (specifically 4-Kids) for turning cigarettes into chocolate bars in One Piece.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

As to the plot, I am interested to see what it is that Yoriko is wanted for.  Having seen light novel promo images, I know the green haired woman is joining the cast (I guess no Atoko and Nyarle), but I’ve no clue what her role is, nor what she could have told Yoriko. I figure it will be something silly though.

Haiyore! Nyaruko-san Episode 05

In the end, a pretty funny episode with a might too much trap crap.

The “25 million years” deal and Hastur’s ready acquiescence has me worried, because it could tie in with the theory that the deities could actually be from the future. I really, really hope they’re not setting the stage for a temporary jump into the future wherein Hastur tries his damnedest to bang Mahiro.

I guess its just me, and the fact that I loved Kampfer but I love our weird love triangle in this show. Hasuta being a boy just adds more fuel to the fire and its been great watching him drive Nyarlko nuts. It is pretty unique amoungst anime since there are several targets.

Also as far as Kuuko your being really mean to her. She is a great character. Its really nice to have an over the top perv that isn’t a straight girl or a stupid guy.

What a surprise that Mahiro would actually hit a girl.

Well, you may be right about the level of discomfort that can come with the trap-stuff for us somewhat homophobic hetero guys. But with a character who looks and acts as girly as Hastur I usually find my discomfort levels suprisingly low. Same experience with Haku way back in the first real Naruto arc. Of course, this is anime, where boys can sometimes really look like girls and they don’t have any boy-parts as long as those’re not explicitly (snort) drawn.

Hastur has two ahoge which look like he has bunny ears.

The torpedoes used against the Deep Ones appear to be a Super Robot Wars reference. The reference to a gauge (mentioned, but not seen; Nyarlko implies that filling a gauge is what activated the symbol on the ceiling of the car, indicating that the weapon could fire) before firing the weapon, the grid filled with deep ones (one per square!) shown as the weapon fires, referring to an area effect weapon as a MAP weapon, and the limited ammo for the weapon are all the sort of thing one might expect to encounter in the Super Robot Wars games (though the limited ammo is hardly unique to that series).
