FUNimation Licenses Canon Tenchi Muyo! Spinoff, Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari

Well, as many of you guys suspected after finding that new FUNimation URL, FUNimation has licensed the canon Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki spinoff Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari.  FUNimation is naming it Tenchi Muyo! War on Geminar, so those of you expecting something like the long-established fan English translation Saint Knight’s Tale, oops. ^_^;

For those unaware, War on Geminar features Tenchi’s half-brother Kenshi, who is somehow sent to another world called Geminar, where in order to try to return to Earth, he’s given a job to assassinate Lashara, who’s to be crowned the next ruler of her people. However, Kenshi ends up going to work for Lashara, where like his older brother Tenchi, he has an ability to attract women of all ages and races as well as some extraordinary abilities as he works to find a way home.

Since I’ve long known that FUNimation had this title, I’ve written this piece well in advance of the actual announcement. As such, I don’t know anything that was stated during the licensing announcement at Otakon, but I figure that we WON’T be getting Japanese honorifics in the subtitles (unlike how GXP and OVA 3 did include them) since the person in charge of that apparently either hates Japanese honorifics, or they make said person have a panic attack.  ^_~  I do wonder about the terminology that will be used for the mecha units and the like in the series.

Still, even without the canon connection to my favorite anime, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki, War on Geminar is an enjoyable ride, filled with a lot of Kajishima-sensei’s ecchi, harem humor, but also with an interesting story to boot. As such, even if FUNimation isn’t likely going to give me exactly what I want, I will be purchasing this.

If FUNimation lets me know more, I’ll be sure to pass that along.

Also, check out my Tenchi Muyo! FAQ site for all canon Tenchi stuff. ^_^

    They didn’t say jack.

      Yeah. Sadly, too much time on the panel was spent (wasted, IMO) on stuff everyone already knew. To me, panels that are to have new licenses should feature new licenses and speak more about them.

    I’m excited about this, and with them finally getting the old Tenchi stuff re-released finally pretty soon, this was a good time to announce it actually. Now I just need to finally see GXP before I get to this. 😛

    Off topic, I’m kind of disappointed that there’s already a section for this on the forums (even if it’s just the overall Tenchi section I think), and one for Fujiko (probably there due to them streaming it), but nothing for Ai Yori Aoshi yet. Where is the love!? ^_^;

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      GXP certainly has its good stuff.

      As to “Ai Yori Aoshi,” I don’t have an answer there. Once they shifted to the new site/forums, I haven’t been much involved in how things are done.

    And to commemorate this event, ANB should write the review of TM! OVA 3. ^_^

    And watch Level-E as well. ^_~

    P.S. Just finished watching Moonlight Mile. Good anime (actually add “Very” before “Good”), but it feels unfinished. It ends when thighs really become interesting. 🙁 But it’s still worth watching. 🙁 And reading the manga if it ever gets scanlated.

    It’s one of those few animes where physics and science really mean something (and are small part of the plot). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_Mile_(manga)

    P.P.S. And watch Level-E, ANB.

    P.P.P.S. And write the review of TM! OVA 3, ANB.

      *LOL* I hear ya. ^_^

      I know you heard me!

      P.S. Mardock Scramble also looks good (at least if you judge by the first episode and positive comments about the books), but it’s still incomplete: the second movie just got translated and the third movie still hasn’t been released even less translated (it should happen about 9-10 months after the release which means around this time in 2013).

      So put it in your already long list for when it’s fully released. But I don’t know if there would be a good group who translated it. Right now it seems it’s only QTS. The status of others is Stalled. 🙁

    This series would have been perfect if they dealt with the baddie at the end of the last episode. Like i have said before, Kajishima is a troll, and the Tenchi franchise has suffered incredibly because of it. TM!R is a disgrace and has no over-arcing story to grab the audience. It could have been something like which of the girls would he choose as a wife, but there never was any romance between ANY of the girls, just lots of individual ideas thrown into one group of characters, who then strangely act OOC, especially in OVA 3.

    This series however was so very nearly perfect but suffered from a story plot that was introduced at the end of the last episode and was never seen into fruition.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      There is an over-arching story in TM!R, its just a more subtle one, that being “who is Tenchi?” ^_~

      >This series however was so very nearly perfect but suffered from a story plot that was introduced at the end of the last episode and was never seen into fruition.

      The plot was actually introduced in the first episode, assuming you are speaking of WoG. It is just that the plot played out very slowly, then we got the traditional Kajishima info-dump at the end. ^_^;

    Any news, or should I say rumor, or maybe hearsay on a 4th part to the ova. With this being licensed, and the ova maybe getting a re-release in its full glory, seems the franchise is still profitable.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      The franchise is most definitely profitable, both here and in Japan. After all, Kajishima-sensei is still cranking out doujinshi every year, and he’s still doing the GXP novels.

      That said, I’ve heard no rumors on another TM!R series. I have heard the possibility of another WoG series, which makes sense considering how the series ends.

    Hey ANB! Been some time….Since our days at the AFC if I remember correctly. Figured I would use this name instead of my new handle in hopes you would remember me.

    I’m disappointed to hear that they possibly won’t be doing honorifics, but i’m at least happy to hear that they will be taking on the series (Figures…The one year I don’t go to Otakon they make a Tenchi announcement!). Do we yet know if they will be taking advantage of Blu-Ray for this release?

    I didn’t look but are they looking to re-release the entire library?

    • JGZinv says:

      Hey Marvel, ex AFC admin JGZ here.

      Pretty much your’s and everyone else’s questions been answered already at TF – http://tenchiforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=578

      We had two members reporting live from Otakon and should have a pod cast special up on YouTube tomorrow.

      Yes Funi got the whole main Tenchi catalog, and all the distro rights. Spin off series like Dual! and Sammy, doesn’t look like it so far.

      There’s more at the link. More so on the newer pages.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

      Hey Marvel. I do remember you from the old forums. ^_^
