UQ Holder Chapter 89 Manga Review (“You can do anything.”)

ユーキューホルダー! Manga Review
UQ Holder Chapter 89

SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:

UQ Holder Chapter 89 Kirie produces a book that explains the Ruin Ishkur and she informs the others about its incredible power and abilities. She tells Touta that Negi Springfield is just as powerful, and Kuroumaru tells him that Negi and Fate were evenly matched, so Touta realizes that if they beat Ruin Ishkur, they’ll be able to beat Fate. The trio come up with a plan and return to the ruined castle.

Ruin Ishkur spots them, wondering if these are the ones Dana warned him about. Kuroumaru disappears and Kirie takes cover as Touta taunts Ruin Ishkur from a distance, using Kurobo (Gravity Blade) as a lightning rod for Ruin Ishkur’s attack. Ruin Ishkur arrives at the spot, only to be surprised when Touta grabs it to punch it. The lightning spirit breaks apart to elude the attack, giving Kuroumaru an opening to attack as Touta grabs Kurobo, increasing its gravity weight by 500,000, and attacks with the sword.

Ruin Ishkur uses Thousand Lightning Bolts to thwart them, forcing Kuroumaru to completely regenerate. The powerful lightning spirit praises their sagacity for making him use Thousand Bolts when Touta prepares to attack again. He gets blasted, but uses his immortality to continue pushing forward. Ruin Ishkur gets annoyed and states that Touta’s efforts are useless since the power difference between the two is just too great.

Touta finds himself in the country under a tree, where Kitty asks asks if they will be meeting the day after tomorrow. Touta says he doesn’t think he can make it in time since he’s not as powerful as Fate or Negi. She tells him that he can do anything and points to his arm, which is transforming into Magia Erebia and showing lightning.

Thoughts/Review:

So that’s how this is going to work. Touta embraces Magia Erebea, adopts the lightning form of Ruin Ishkur, and defeats it.

Heh! I laughed out loud at Kitty’s remark on Touta being able to do anything. That’s pretty much what I’ve said from early on in this manga — Touta is designed to basically be able to do anything after seeing it done a few times.

UQ Holder Chapter 89

As to Ruin Ishkur being a single entity, or a rare type of high level lightning spirits that hang out in ruins, that is not laid out. However, I suspect that it is just a very rare type of ultra powerful entity that can show up in ruins for whatever reasons.  (I would compare Ruin Ishkur to something like a world with Ancient Red Dragons, who are the rarest and most powerful of all dragons, which is a type of Red Dragons, which might be uncommon, but not rare, which are then a type of dragon, which are common and have many varieties.)

When Touta dies, we’ve seen him appear in a realistic type of place where he sees people and things. Seeing him with Kitty, I’m wondering if he’s creating his own kind of Cosmo Entelecheia in his mind, only it isn’t a perfect world. Maybe I should more accurately call it a phantasmagoria he is creating in his mind. That’s what appears to be happening.

Kurobo doesn’t have much to do and seems to just get pulled out of thin air whenever Touta needs a weapon. It also seems to conveniently never say anything, except for a brief joke in this chapter.

Finally, I hear that this week’s Weekly Shounen Magazine is a double issue, meaning there will be no magazine next week and thus no chapter. As such, I guess we’ll have to wait a couple of weeks to discover what happens next.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ruin Ishkur isn’t really as powerful as Negi or Fate – it just appears so from the power level perspective of the Numbers. To use Rakan’s meter, the Numbers range from high 10’s to low 100’s, and from the perspective of that level, everything of several thousand on the ranking scale is equally powerful.

Also, during Touta’s first battle within the UQ Holders, Touta automatically went into Magia Erebea when he was backed into the corner – and managed to suppress it. I think even if Touta defeats, or much more likely, holds the spirit long enough for Kuromaru and Kirie to retrieve the box, it remains to be seen whether Touta can summon Magia Erebea on demand, or whether he needs a trigger still.

Finally, I think whoever designed Touta really wanted to design a bona fide shounen hero, complete with the capability of Shounen powerups. If Magia Erebea and Magic Cancel can be thought of as software over the hardware of Touta, Touta Shounen powerups are something analogous to hidden folders that reveal themselves on a trigger. At the very least, the designers happened to replicate Negi’s ability to learn extremely fast.

    • Dargor says:

No, its probably not. Rakan (presumably) defeated the creature because it had the same weakness RT I Negi had, namely that it sent streams before all of its movements, and its attacks aren’t perpetual like RT II.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

Yeah, that’s a good point. Ruin Ishkur probably does have the same weaknesses Negi’s technique had.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if Ruin Ishkur isn’t really as powerful as Negi or Fate – it just appears so from the power level perspective of the Numbers.

Meaning Ruin Ishkur is ultra powerful if you aren’t prepared (which they weren’t initially), but with education and prep (not training), the weakness in Ruin Ishkur’s power is exploited, much like Jack exploited the weakness in Negi’s attack during their fight in Negima?

…it remains to be seen whether Touta can summon Magia Erebea on demand, or whether he needs a trigger still.

I think he will be able to do so quite easily before too much longer.

At the very least, the designers happened to replicate Negi’s ability to learn extremely fast.

To be honest, I think Akamatsu-sensei wanted to tell some tales of immortality as well as continue the “Where’s Nagi?” story that ended with the final showdown with the Mage of the Beginning. However, with him having ended Negima and bringing UQ Holder to life, Akamatsu-sensei needed to get his main character up to Negi’s level as fast as possible in order to have Touta replace Negi in the story. I think that having this whole romance thing between Eva and Touta is further proof of that.

      • andmeuths says:

I greatly doubt that Touta’s love for Eva is “romantic” persay. Given that Akamatsu has some knowledge of Greek, I wonder whether the point he’s driving at, is that the word love (which Japanese variant did Akamatsu use anyway?) is very imprecise. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has is going for something on the order of the various words for Lovein the Greek language (ie: Eros, Philia, Storge , Agape, Ludus , Pragma, etc) , when it comes to Touta and Eva’s relationship.

Kirie thinks that Touta feels “Eros” for a girl, whenever she says “it’s a girl” . Whenever any of the numbers comment on the pseudo parental relationship between Eva and Touta, they invoke Storge. When Touta claims that Kuromaru is the only one he can truly confide many things to, he’s claiming Phileo between both of them (for Kuromaru, this oscillates between Phiileo and Eros). Touta still hasn’t properly figured out how he feels about Eva, just that it’s definitely not Eros, is originally Storge, and now is something else he can’t quite comprehend yet. Incidentally, most of the Love between members of the Nakama is Phileo in nature.

Since Evangeline is acquainted with Greek, there’s probably no doubt that she should know the whole idea of love is quite an imprecise one (and there are languages with even more precise words for the various kinds of love), even in Japanese, let alone Engish.

Shipping Eva x Touta essentially argues that their relationship is Eros – infact, the vast majority of shipping in anime presumes Eros. I don’t think that’s what Akamatsu is doing here – so far, the “love” between Eva and Touta has been on a reciprocal basis. What Akamatsu is trying to do here, is for Eva and Touta to be in a relationship of “Agape”, unconditional love – which before the Dana arc, didn’t seem to be the case, and is the root of Touta’s insecurity.

Then again, this theory might be presuming too much out of Akamatsu, but I do think that part of the problem is that both Japanese and English have trouble expressing Touta’s relationships, because there’s this huge undifferentiated word we call love (and for the Japanese, Suki, Daisuki, and Ashiteru….).

But I am certain that there would not be any Shipping, in the “Eros” sense between Eva and Touta – that possibility was sunk, Touta renounced Storge when he left the UQ Holder head quarters – and Phileo is closed off for obvious reasons. I think what Touta wants really, is an unconditional relation between himself and Eva, and deep down, Eva’s seeking for a similar unconditional relationship.

In a sense, for perhaps three weeks or so, Evangeline played the role as Touta’s Sempai. Not Touta’s Sensei, mother, or boss. Perhaps this is Akamatsu’s defense of school settings – only as a Sempai or a classmate, could relationships develop in a certain direction. In a sense, this is the most “School-life” arc, even more so than the Mahora Zombie apocalypse arc. And Akamatsu I think drew alot of the potential out of this arc very well, especially with Eva and Touta – because for most of the past eight – nine chapters, Eva has essentially been Touta’s Sempai in Immortal-School.

Eva’s time with Touta is the closest Eva has ever has experienced of “school life” until Nagi confined her in Mahora Academy for over ten years. Furthermore, Touta has been retroactively made into the closest thing an immortal like Eva could have, to an “Osanajimi”.
Over the course of the last few chapters, Touta has ended up as both Kouhai and Childhood friend to Evangeline. Amazingly, Akamatsu made me buy that, even though, if you told me in abstract at the beginning of UQ Holder, that Akamatsu is going to make Touta a Kouhai and Osanajimi to Eva in this arc , I would have pre-emptively declared that UQ Holder would have jumped the shark this arc. As it turns out, the opposite has happened.

I also take the “you can do anything” as Touta’s boundless optimism talking. Or in other words, Touta recovers his insane optimism that he had in prior arcs.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I greatly doubt that Touta’s love for Eva is “romantic” persay.

I don’t know what word Touta is using for “love” in the Japanese, but I do think there is a romantic love element involved. As Yukihime, Touta just saw Eva in that form as a guardian and pseudo family member. So he wasn’t sexually attracted to her, but he did care about her greatly.

As Kitty, Touta sees Eva in a new light. She’s no longer the adult guardian. She’s the attractive girl in a similar circumstance to him. He knows that she’ll become the Yukihime he knows, but at this point, she’s not Yukihime — she’s Kitty. His actions and desperation to see her reminded me of my own, young, teenage years when it came to seeing another girl and arranging to meet her again. His feelings of “owing” Yukihime-Kitty are transposing to romantic feelings, as I see it.

I do see the points you are making, but while I agree Touta isn’t consciously thinking “romantic love” for Eva, I think his actions speak louder than his words.

      • Inspuck says:

Whenever I see “phantasmagoria” it makes me laugh because it’s used so seriesly despite the word actually meaning “bullshit”

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I don’t see it being defined as BS.

          Full Definition of PHANTASMAGORIA
          1
: an exhibition of optical effects and illusions
          2
a : a constantly shifting complex succession of things seen or imagined
          b : a scene that constantly changes
          3
: a bizarre or fantastic combination, collection, or assemblage

Still, I believe the term was used in Negima for when Eva created a realistic area in a place where only she, Setsuna, Negi, and whomever else tagged along were witness to via mental connection.

    • Rob C. says:

You bring up a interesting point, andmeuths. Touta’s creators. Why was Touta made? He wasn’t born due to “love” between Negi’s descendants. He was likely born to be a weapon, to fight….what. I think that’s something that hasn’t really been brought up often. There not way to know until the plot gets past this training period and back to the Tournament again.

Touta maybe a generic slow/fast burning hero in the making, but at same time there another question. What is behind his creation in the first place, what is (if there is one) threat that lingers out there.

  3. mattcgw says:

Ruin Ishkur; plays out like a final fantasy boss, according to kire’s description.

A problem has occurred. However, as touta demonstrated in this chapter, ruin’s speed blitzing was ineffective in subduing/defeating touta. Therefore, if touta were to gain
RT 1 & II, it would be rendered moot after an arc or so. Since the level of immortals he would be fighting are going to be equal to him, thus would be able to shrug his attacks off and predict his movements then beat him.

Back in negima, Magia was just a shortcut for negi to quickly gain the power and experience he would need in order for him to square off against Cosmo Entelecheia, but he had magical proficiency (as well as being able to acutely use magic, which touta cannot) to back him, an example of this, Thundergod lance (Chilipen Astrapen Producam)

Point is magia was never meant to be a long term move set, only an equalizer. But with touta’s path set use magia; as a long term skill set. It will quickly be rendered invalid. I highly doubt that RT III would be anymore effective against the type of opponents touta will. Primarily because those are the only types’ of opponents they can fight while being presented as a credible threat to them.

Magia will then get left by the wayside, once Endgame touta begins reality warping and erasing/cancelling opponents out of existence or just warping space-time in general, but that’s about 250 chapters away.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I don’t know if Magia Erebea will be rendered invalid. I think Negi continued to use it because it took his current power level and boosted it even more. Eva, despite her massive power, still uses ME to make her impressive powers even more impressive.

      • andmeuths says:

I think Magia Erebea would primarily be used as a defensive skill – evasion, and to equalize against overwhelming odds. But I do agree that the next step would be Touta mastering Magic Cancel to it’s fullest potential – basically, Lifemaker magic. Still, Magia Erebea Lightning form should be good enough for Touta to progress a good distance into the Mahora tournament, and face the girl that calls him Nii-san (and crushing her). In-fact, it’s possible we end up with Touta fighting Eva, and Eva schooling him on the limitations of Magia Erebea. With Magia Erebea lightning form, thrash mobs can’t touch him, but “final boss tier” opponents still can with ease.

I can imagine Eva already knows the next steps – after Lightning Form, Touta has to be able to replicate what he did to Dana on a reliable, on demand basis. Then after that, the exploration of the full potential of the White Magic of Mars.

        • mattcgw says:

Agreed, it would seem the only forward for touta, in regards to offencive Magia Erabrea. is Holy/divine. Since large category of immortal opponents they will fight are typically classified as vulnerable to Holy/Divine attack or properties. Across the majority of fantasy media and games.

It could work quite well, close the gap with RT II or III (when it gets introduced) switch to holy magia and strike, switch back to RT. Repeat. it is curious thesis about Armament hit and run tactics.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I’m pretty sure both Negi and Eva used Magia Erebea for offensive purposes as well as defensive ones. I think Touta would use it in a similar fashion here.

You are right in that if we are shown the tournament again, Touta will no doubt be using ME and his other abilities consciously rather than instinctively.

  4. OverMaster says:

    “You can do anything”.

Oh my God, the shameless shilling.

  5. Dargor says:

Well, at least this series isn’t pretending Touta isn’t the specialist widdle snowflake in the universe.

For the record though Astro, Cosmo Entelecheia isn’t a “perfect” reality. The Lifemaker itself even conceded to that point. Each verse so to speak follows its own internal logic, and while its specifically designed to emulate a world in which someone is content, its not something everyone my conciously desire. After all, Setsuna and Eva are still rather cold towards Negi due there being no reason to bond with them throughout his adventures, and its likely all of his relationships would not be as strong as they are due to the lack of real danger.

In basic, the Lifemaker is literally invoking the use of the whole Multiverse concept itself to make its plan work, which is kinda cool/frighting.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Well, at least this series isn’t pretending Touta isn’t the specialist widdle snowflake in the universe.

      That’s true.

For the record though Astro, Cosmo Entelecheia isn’t a “perfect” reality….After all, Setsuna and Eva are still rather cold towards Negi due there being no reason to bond with them throughout his adventures…

Ah, that’s right. I’d forgotten about that moment until you mentioned it. Good point.

  6. Blacki says:

I hate to admit it but im starting to grew tired of “I can do everything” cr*ap from Touta….
Fate and CE was at least to be desgined to be like the last bosses so that they were able to do pretty much everything was a plot point, but this now is just getting crappier and crappier with every chapter.
And then you have to keep in mind then when Touta gets so much powers up, how are the others of UQH ranked in powerlevel to him (before and after his “training”)? -.-
Negima hat at least a believeable power-up and training line, but this is just ridiculous.
Still i will read UQ on for the sake of seeing Zazzie again T_T if she ever appears again and not just in backflashes *still curses that Zazzie got so low screen time in Negima*

On an other point, im suprised that i found so less raging and bashing in the communities about a point which many just lost track of or just plainly ignored it for the hope that it gets sloved/answered later.
What im talking about is Ken punshing nearly everyone in the face with that “Clone of Negi” thing. I mean come on? CLONE? That means that nearly EVERY shipping of any Negi X “InsertNegimaGirlHere” is done for. Ken has to pull a huge plottwist to make any shipping work again. And seeing how UQ is going on right now and where is it heading too i honestly say and think that this plot twist will end up as huge CRAP.
Just think about it. At first we saw Negis “grave”, then we get slapped into the face from Fate stating that he IS alive in some way (many point out to the MotB), then we get the Clone/Copy crap for Touta…. => means that any shipping of any relation which Negi might have had, would have happened between the fight with MotB and the end of Negima.
Then take into account that we have absolutly NO FACTS about Nagi. I dont think Nagi would have letted something happen to Negi like it did to him if he and the rest of Ala Rubra would have been able to do something about it, not to forget Fate and the other girls.
I cannot see a stunt which Ken can pull to make any shipping of Negi happening, which is basically one of the story lines of Negima. With this said i think Ken just blow up every relation setting which he builed up in Negima.
And yeah, i can hear people say: But what is with the Konoe name? I think the answer for this can be quite simple. They either wanted to hide him, or take care of him seeing as he is just a “failure”. We have no information who exactly his Konoe parents where, as such they can be just “branch” house members who were tasked to take care of him and thats it.

To keep long ranting short, Ken is slowly but steady destroying all the setups he made in Negima towards Negi for the sake of some overpowered brat. -.-

    • ryuuya says:

Despite his gifts Touta did nothing significant so far, he has ME, MC but he fights with physical moves and Shundou or uses Kurobo. Until he learns to use them he will stay the weakest, Kuromaru and Santa are better than him as of now and he will certainly not be way above them after this.

      • Seimei says:

        Ryuuya : + 1000

I said exactly the same thing since the arc slums (one year and a half) but some here will not understand! ^^ NO, Tota IS NOT overpowered! Bingo my friend !

Blacki: Ok so … For you marriage is required for you to conclude with the birth of a baby! Love for love does not exist! If Negi had no children this may mean ONLY, he has not told a girl of 3-A, he has not come out with it and that was not married to her …

Okayyyy and it was me; that was treated sexist because I DARE say that I did not like the Negima’s harem … It is pitiful. You should not sum up love or marriage to reproduction Blacky!

Me even though I did not like the harem of Negima I took for granted, that Negi, married Konoka. And even though it may never be revealed. Know that has a Standard procedure in several harems. The author does not reveal with whom the hero has finished so that, each reader can imagine that this is the girl he preferred that ended with the hero.

        That’s all.

        • Seimei says:

Note that I do not deny that Tota will probably become overpowered by the end of the manga (which would not displease me if it reveals exact ^^). I’m just saying, ACTUALLY, he is NOT overpowered.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

Seimei — you may not be intending to do this, but your remarks come off as attacks on other writers. This reply is a perfect example. I understand you are very passionate about UQ Holder, but when replying to others, try to phrase things better so that you make your point without slamming others for their opinions. Thanks!

          • Seimei says:

I know what you want to say and you are not wrong.
In my review I tried to be jabbing while avoiding being too aggressive, but we must believe that it may not easily be understood like that. My goal was certainly to shake a little my “verbal adversary”, but not really for attack him, but it is true that the assay is sometimes hard to determine, thank you to hit me a little on my fingers at some time Astro-san, Anyway, it make me to think occasionally when i’m a litlle angey^^
I must say that I SINCERELY and REALLY tired of hearing/seeing people say “olala Negi had no children, so this means he has married nobody in 3-A!” WHAT THE F ** k?!!. Platonic love you know? Or even carnal love without reproduction objective?

And I am even more outraged that one day, someone called me a sexist here because I said to not love the 3-A. While is was only the expression of my personal taste, as some allowed themselves to break sugar on UQ Holder because it’s too much “shonen-like” for them, Okay but in this case, I then just merely returned the ball at the time, I applied the same logic as theirs about UQ Holder, but with 3-A. And it has not missed, I pulled open the target! lol.
Again, and I have said several times, this is NOT a question of good or poor quality in my opinion but a matter of taste. Some believe that UQ is a bad manga, but they forget judging by the criteria of its genre. He’s a good shonen but some do not like the shonen here what I can understand perfectly. But in this case, they inevitably find that manga is bad. Was corrupt their critics in large part for me.

But again I understand PERFECTLY that no one likes all the same things, I myself do not like the magical-girl (madoka magica and nanohavers are obviously the only exceptions, and Negima, even if it is not not considered like a true a magical-girl), is only so much I blame the magical-girl to exist? No…

When some crashes on Tota because he allegedly overpowered, now I’m just throwing one or two time littles refutations but no more, I’m almost become accustomed to here, and once again : everyone’s opinions.

But read a comment like “Negi could not have children so it has chosen nobody!” it annoys me because I understand myself: “oh my god, Negi has chosen nobody because he saw the girls that as his servants and laying hens, because everyone knows that girls are only use for … MAKE KIDS! ” It was for me sexism, real, anyway personally.

Negi has considered that person chooses because he had no child. honestly do not gear? And I was criticized and treated sexist because I say do not love the harem Negima.

So you will understand (a little^^) my little “rant” against Blackie I think
This reinforces my idea that most critics about UQ Holder are only false pretext. I was repeatedly told een answer “no romantic resolution is not the only problem UQ” but the fact remains that, curiously it almost always comes back to that, in any case has the impression I have.

          • Aki says:

Similar cases happened way back in chapter 40’s

If I’m not mistaken seimei said he was more accustomed to 2ch or 4ch or something where there are more trolls’ flame bait etc and the general atmosphere was more aggressive.

I told him this was ur personal blog and to be more considerate of others

        • Blacki says:

Right, Touta is not OP just yet, but seriously, the way Ken sets up Touta is just ridiculous with his ability to do everything and adapt to everything. Its just like Astro said a while back with his “reasons” post, it just doesnt cut. I love Kens work, dont get me wrong there, but what he does with his main character in UQ is just cr*p.

And no, i never stated that “marriage is required for you to conclude with the birth of a baby”. I just dont think that Negi would just “hit one up” and then charge into the enemie the day after. And NO, im not refering to a marriage now or anything else. We all saw how responsible he is in Negima towards his companions, so something like this is out of character. HOWEVER, if he gets pulled, against his own will, into something where he isnt able to return from, then is that a diffrent story. And here is the big BUT. Giving the timeline and backflashes / informations we got up until now, that option is HIGHLY unlikly as it would mean he only hitted the third base after a very very long time and this “getting taking away accident” would have happened, if i remember rightly, 30 years prior the UQ timeline.
Thats the reason why i said what i said above. No offense to anyone here thought, but thats just how i see the current situation with it.

          • Seimei says:

Ok I see, you’re actually a bit like Ragna, you like UQ Holder but you do not like Tota, that I can understand perfectely.

And personally I do not like him more for the moment but I do not hate him either. His progress seems to me satisfactory and in fact I even almost found him still too weak at the moment, he is pitiful, lol. But just that, like most of the main characters of movies, manga, novels, video games ect, he releases no charisma or special presence. He seems terribly ordinary and banal.

In a general way I like only very rarely the main characters in the stories. I prefer the secondary characters when they are badass, and ESPECIALLY the antagonnistes, is why I expect the sister of Tota and especially lifemaker, they put me in the eye! ^^

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

Well, Touta did punk Kuroumaru in their first fight, forcing Kuroumaru to regenerate from what would have been a killing blow.

The only reason Touta hasn’t done anything “significant” is because he’s doing everything on instinct. He sees someone do something and he can do it to the level he witnessed it being done, or he does something without knowing why or how to do it again. With Dana’s training, that limiter will be removed and Touta in all of his OP glory will emerge as the next Nagi wannabe.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

In terms of the “clone” thing, it seems that “homunculus” is the more accurate term. 😉

  7. jeffers says:

“Anything you can do i can do better
I can do anything better than you
    No you cant!
    Yes i can!(cos im Touta)”

lol all bad jokes aside i wonder what santas upta i see some ME asspull in the near future

    • andmeuths says:

If Touta is a defective clone, I shudder to imagine what would have been a well made, flawless clone. Probably, at this stage, such a clone would be taking Magic Cancel to delete people from reality, Lifemaker style.

      • NT says:

Money says that might be the main enemy of this manga. And maybe that Hoodie Girl is fighting/hiding fro it.

      • AstroNerdBoy says:

I think as a defective copy/homunculus, Touta couldn’t consciously access Negi’s vast powers. Thanks to Dana’s training, that defect is being corrected.

Yeah, I thought Santa would be part of this plan for sure. I was way, WAY wrong.

  8. cold_menthol says:

I think Kurobo is indeed pulled out of thin air, by Kuro that is. It seems like Kuro is holding Kurobo in his/her version of Gate of Babylon for Touta.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I’m not so sure that Kuroumaru is storing Kurobo. I think Touta has been alone when suddenly he has the sword again. Considering that Kurobo is “alive” at some level, it may be that Kurobo can put itself into a subspace area, similar to what Kuroumaru does, and produce itself for Touta at will.

      • cold_menthol says:

Well, there is that one panel where Touta told Kuro to “give it to him”, and then in the next panel, Touta is holding Kurobo. It wasn’t specified if “it” refers to Kurobo or not, but “it” being Kurobo was how I interpret that.

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

I seem to remember that. I’d need to reread the chapter in question.

That being said, when Touta is alone, how is Kurobo coming and going?

          • cold_menthol says:

From what I remember, he has a bag with him when he ran from the HQ. I don’t really remember when else he’s holding Kurobo when he’s alone (Santa arc?). I do remember someone from the slump threw it to him in slump arc, and it seemed like Karin threw it to him in Fate arc. Although, if that really was her, I don’t understand how she could hold it in the first place. Anyway, there are many inconsistencies in this manga, so..

  9. Aki says:

Hmm so Ruin Ishkar is on par with Negi’s Raiten Taishou (as stated by Jack Rakan) although intellectual wise Negi would be more dominant I would say…

As for Touta I think he been passively absorbing some lightning and storing that power.

As for his scene with Eva… that occured to Negi to… on the Verge of death or realm between life and death, he would be in a mental psych plane where he appears in his inner world and speaks with mental materialisations of people he know.

E.G for Touta it is Eva… for Negi is it Eva and Nagi

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

As for Touta I think he been passively absorbing some lightning and storing that power.

That’s an interesting thought, especially since it follows the pattern of Touta seeing people perform things and then he’s able to do them.

That being said, I figured that this was Touta subconsciously tapping into more of Negi’s abilities and the things Negi did with ME.

As for his scene with Eva… that occured to Negi to… on the Verge of death or realm between life and death, he would be in a mental psych plane where he appears in his inner world and speaks with mental materialisations of people he know.

Wasn’t that the CE moment? (I’m really tired at the moment and my brain isn’t working right, so I’m not remembering properly.)

      • arimareiji says:

I wonder, what will happen when Kuroumaru becomes a lovely girl in front of Touta? (^_~)

      • Aki says:

Sadly I doubt he will make effective use of magia erebea… Because negi uses it in a strategic way and perfected it usage by overcoming the shortcoming of its efficiency…

It’s like a Eva created the skill and it’s formula and concept but could not complete it.

Negi then completes what she could not due to his intellect but completing the formula and making the concept real.

Touta will never achieve that or even make use of it like Eva can due to magic cancel but like negi who became immortal and could absorbed spalls to a degree (taking fate punch in base form and coming out okay) I think touta has that passive ability.

Anyways No not the CE moment u know when negi died due to shielding girls from Dynamis arm… He wound up in his inner world and meet Eva and etc who help revive him. Those were his mental image of them.

Touta is merely experiencing a phantasmagoria and is meeting his mental image of Eva (a cute young normal and happy girl)

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

If I had to guess (and Akamatsu-sensei is attempting to keep us all off balance in guessing what he will and won’t do), I think the goal is to have Touta be more powerful than Nagi and Negi combined. So I wouldn’t be surprised if Touta uses ME in new and exciting ways. 😉

Touta is merely experiencing a phantasmagoria and is meeting his mental image of Eva (a cute young normal and happy girl)

I’m probably thinking too much, but it has been in my mind that if Touta is an amalgam homunculus of various people, Eva might have made a contribution, then that might be why Touta is doing these phantasmagoria creations, and why Eva is in one. But like I said, I’m no doubt overthinking things.

I thought that this arc would end up in the chapter 90, but, it seems that it will end up later.

Poor sword. The way that Touta used it. XD

Santa is still missing. Maybe he is inside the ruins with the books XD … No, I think that he will help Touta of some way…
also, It seems that Touta will be able to defeat the demon with Magia Erebea…

    “You can do anything” Lol
It remembered me a thing from Fairy tail, when Erza is fighting with Kyouka in the chapter 404. Happy said:
“There is a Simple Explanation: It’s because it’s Erza”
Then, we would say here: “It’s because it’s Touta” lol

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

I thought that this arc would end up in the chapter 90, but, it seems that it will end up later.

Nothing about this story has been predictable as to where it will go, thanks to Akamatsu-sensei being so random of late.

Santa is still missing. Maybe he is inside the ruins with the books XD … No, I think that he will help Touta of some way…

I figured Santa would show up in this chapter, but he hasn’t.

“There is a Simple Explanation: It’s because it’s Erza”

😆 Erza gets away with it because Erza is awesomeness. Touta is not. That being said, one of the things that has caused me to become weary with Fairy Tail is the repetitive nature to stories.

      • It’s interesting to see you guys pointing this, because that sort of *censored* is the main reason that made me drop Fairy Tail. xD I literally closed the window and didn’t read even another page after Happy did that crappy explanation(?) and we were supposed to handwave all the things that SHOULD lead to Erza’s defeat there. How this series has fallen… (Now I call it Fairy Fail. And that’s coming from someone who used to LOVE the series back then, up to Tower of Heaven and Oracion Seis first arc)

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

For me, I gave Fairy Tail a pass since early on, it was pretty clear to me that Mashima-sensei was going to play pretty loose with continuity and that he was always going to have them “pull one out of the fire” by reaching deep, each and every time. However, even knowing this, it has made Fairy Tail become somewhat tedious to me.

Well, Crunchyroll finally got things working later on Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning.

Anywho, interesting chapter. Seems that Ruin is in league with Dana and that he was asked to actually be there to serve as an obstacle for the kids.

Regarding the last page, I’m starting to wonder if Kitty’s comment isn’t referring just to the Magia Erebea, but also to the glass of water in his hand. Could Touta end up using some sort of water-based spell or attack to “short out” the lightning-based Ruin?

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Crunchyroll is not that impressive when it comes to quality control. I think that one chapter of UQH is still missing a page. There was that one chapter where it took them nearly a week to get it back online.

Initially, I thought that this was merely a sign of Touta’s using ME and tapping into Negi’s lightning powers, based on having seen Ruin Ishkur do it. That may be all it is.

That being said, it may also be that if Touta is a homunculus with DNA from multiple sources, Eva might have made a contribution, thus giving him access to her water/ice magic.

  12. >> Can do anything.
    >> Keeps getting curbstomped all the time.
    >> Even by the small fry in the tournament.
…I don’t understand where Akamatsu is trying to go. ROFL

    • /\ By the way, that’s my cute way of saying that my main problem with Touta here is how his “progress” is being handled. But I’ll stop at that.

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

It is rather haphazard on Akamatsu-sensei’s part. That being said, I think that Akamatsu-sensei’s ultimate goal is to have Touta be even more massive than Negi and Nagi combined. He’s basically established that Touta has all of these powers, it is just that he doesn’t consciously tap into them until he sees others doing them first.

  13. Don says:

No spoilers for chapter 90 yet? 🙁

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

No chapter this week because Weekly Shounen Magazine isn’t being published this week. Last week was a “double issue.”

      • Don says:

I see. I´d expect a small notice but seeing as there was none in any of the manga´s , I wasn´t aware 🙁

        • AstroNerdBoy says:

Crunchyroll is hit-or-miss on these things. I think it was long time Negima fan Hato that alerted me to this.

          • arimareiji says:

Amen. Lately their posts for new manga chapters are almost always last-minute or after-the-fact, frequently wrong, and sometimes never go up at all (especially for the months-behind Squeenix-supplied “translations”). ( ・᷄ ︵・᷅ )

          • AstroNerdBoy says:

I think that one chapter of UQH still has a missing page.

  14. Ste says:

“and points to his arm, which is transforming into Magia Erebia and showing lightning”
It is too simply think that. But… look better, Touta has a glass of water on his hand. Electricity and water are not good friends, and it “answers” better to the sentences “the solution is just on your hand”.. as shadowofthevoid observed (I saw his replay after I wrote 🙂 )

  15. mattcgw says:

    Homunculus or Chimera?!

    • AstroNerdBoy says:

Homunculus. A chimera is formed by taking body parts of different beings and combining them. A homunculus is created and born through alchemist means.
